Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
If you ignore the 2 incredibly boring Ultramarines characters, it wasn't that bad... And besides, Tales of Heresy has (to me at least) overtaken Descent of Angels as the worst of the series so far - Even the decent World Eaters story couldn't save it wow. tales of heresy was awesome, for wolf at the door and the last church alone... but hey, to each their own no? Valdenaar
In my opinion, Ben Counter is something of an enigma. Sometimes he rights some damn hot stuff then at others he writes the most boring piece of crap imaginable. The Soul Drinkers for instance are a perfect example, some of them are really great reads but others are boring or if not boring certainly not "on the edge of your seat" stuff. On the whole I think HH is a brilliant series that was needed so all those hardcore 40K fans could see how it all came about but i do agree that some of the books do leave something to be desired though there is not one I specifically hate. Also i will fight Graham McNeill's corner by saying that yes, he like Counter has some bad books but he is still a great author. I mean look at the Ultramarines books. He managed to turn the most boring and uniform of all the Space Marine Chapters into something a little different. Oh and yes Abnett is cool. Almighty Nocturnus
I`m reading Battle for the Abyss now...I`m hoping it won`t suck as bad as everyone says it does. I`ve found Ben Counter`s writing to be kind of inconsistent. For example, Grey Knights rocked...but the follow up in that series was not so good and some logic gaps. Possibly, the same thing could be said about Galaxy in Flames and Battle for the Abyss . As long as we are bringing the other ones up, Decent of Angels did not outright suck, but it wasn`t exactly riveting either. I`m willing to suspend judgement until I`ve read "Part 2". The one that through me for a loop, was Abnett`s Legion. I loved the first 95% of it and thought it was fine that he rewrote a lot of canon - including a previously unknown Primarch, enheard of Imperial army structures, etc. But, the end...I`m sorry...I end up bashing this on every forum...but :cuss? The universe in NOT about the struggle between mankind and Chaos, or even the Imperium and some Xeno races? The whole universe is being run by a secret sect of guys? Then, upon learning of their manipulation, the Alpha Legion agree to do this clandestine group`s work? And the Alpha Legion make no attempt to eradicate this organization who - hello?!? - seem a like a much bigger threat to the Imperium than Chaos? Huh?! (I guess I had it all wrong about 40K; I can`t wait till they bring out Codex: Cabal! They are truly the most powerful army in the 40K universe...the Imperium, Chaos, even Orks are inconsequential to their plans). Am I the only one who found that end scene to be strange? Oh yeah, spoiler alert. Wadey13
I found BftA a strange book. It was OK as a story (And I think there will be sequels into the Battle for Calth), but it just didn't feel Heresy-ish to me. It felt like a standard 40K story and characters with the clock on the wall simply turned to read 30K. All the other HH novels and stories feel, to me, to have the proper atmoshere of a different time and place in an age of hope and reason, not the grim dark of 40K - but this one just ... didn't. Yeah man I really feel you on this, it just doesn't have that...thing!! The first three books have that thing and have that optimistic outlook which is what makes them all the more ironic and poignant as doubt slowly seeps in and that optimisism is eroded. Battle for the Abyss, like you say, could just be another 4oK book! Anyway, i'm getting into it now, about 3/4's through it and it got better when the spaceships engaged, i think one thing Counter is good at is describing com bat, 'cause i started reading a bit more fervently when i got to that bit And Almighty Nocturnus, we have a thread going on that for you to vent your fury! B) I'd like to hear you theories anyway http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...64722&st=25 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/165442-comparing-galaxy-in-flamnes-and-battle-for-the-abyss/page/2/#findComment-1962512 Share on other sites
