Repainting my old Sallie army

I've been trying to get my Sallie army repainted for some time. But time is always the issue. So I came up with a way to "speed-paint" them and get a decent tabletop quality out of them.

First is my "counts as" Vulcan He'stan Captain:

His arms are magnetized, so I can substitute other weapons so that he can be an "ordinary" Captain if I choose (if I ever get those painted).

Next is one of my Tactical Squads. These units take me about a week of before/after work painting to get done:

And a second Tactical Squad:

The only changes I made to them between the last time I painted them and this time is replace the pewter weapons with plastic and replace the chainswords with power weapons (scavenged from some leftover 2nd ed close combat sprues) - some rearrangement of the army was also necessary as they cannot take twin flamers in Tactical Squads any more (yes, these minis are OLD). <_<

I have a few more things in the WIP process, but I haven't got them photographed yet.

Let me know what you think.

Heh, heh - that is what makes this site so wonderful. One of the responses I got from another thread helped to point out the errors of my ways and I managed to take a better photo of one of my Sergeants.

Now it looks like I'm going to have to reshoot the whole batch again ;)

Here is an improved photo of one of my Sergeants:

Brother Mayhem, here is a link to a post I made in the tutotial section on how I paint my Sallies. It really is so simple and easy that anyone can do it with very little practice.

OK. After getting some valuable help in the "how to take photographs" catagory, I've taken a few more pics of my Sallies in hopes of some of the details being a bit more clear to see:

They are really simple conversions. All you do is remove the chainsword blade from the arm and replace it with the power sword blade from the older 2nd edition close combat sprue. Granted, those sprues are harder to come by now, but I think there are a few still out there.

Yes, with the exception of the Chapter badges, all markings are freehand.

Here are steps I followed:

1) Painted the shoulderpad white.

2) Painted a 'kalo' effect starting in the center with a mix of Skull White/Sunburst Yellow, working out to Sunburst Yellow with a spot of Blood Red towards the outside.

3) Then painted the 'negative space' black.

makes for some quick and easy flames that look very close in style to those portrayed in the IA articles/Codex: Armageddon.

I LOVE Salamanders and remember the 3rd Armageddon campaign that they were released with.. damn I wanted to start an army with them then, but as I was only like 14 I did not have the money to maintain 6 armies at once xD

Here is a tutorial I did on speed-painting Salamanders Space Marines.

For the decals, I make small cuts in them to allow them to mold better to the rounded surface and use Microsol and Microsoft to help soften the decal.

I then do a light drybrush of Codex Grey over them to cut the white a little and make them appear more painted on. Then repaint the black around the outside. A lot of people ask me if I hand-paint the Chapter badge because it looks so convincing when done this way.

You meant Microsol and Microset, right? 'Cause otherwise I missed when Bill Gates started making modeling products. I wouldn't use them if he did, however, they're probably not compatible with each other. <_<

Ahh, that's what I get for posting at work. :Elite:

Yes, I meant Microset.
