Targeters on a character

If I buy a targeter for an independant Inquisitor, he can premeasure distance before he shoots.

If I attach the Inquisitor to a squad of Grey Knights, do I still get the benefit of the targeter on the squad, even though no one else has one?

By the same token, if I attach an Inquisitor (with no Targeter) to a unit of IST (who all have targeters), does it still benefit the whole squad?

It feels like a silly question, and I'm sure the answer will be "yes it benefits the whole squad", but I just want to be 100% sure

You do realise you can just buy the targeter on the Justicar anyway, right?

As to your question, you measure from the model(s) with targeters. If you know (roughly) the spread of your other models, you can gues-stimate the distance to the enemy unit. It's a pretty powerful ability, don't waste it

Related question: Seeing as how it's so powerful, why is it only one point? I just don't get it.

Cos Stormtroopers have it standard, and it doesn't directly cause damage (it's like a Tau markerlight). It's power comes from application (ie measure movement, assaults, enemy shooting range etc), and then the use of other units based on that information.

I know it's only one point, so very very cheap. But lets says a player was very good a guessing ranges (I used to play WFB Tomb king and could generally guess a distance within 1-2" when shooting my catapults), is it that useful? Also, I find that my GKs (once out of their transports) are most of the time within 12" of enemy squads..

Is there something I missing, should I keep my grey knights about 24" away from opponents?

Thanks!

Of course it depends on the circumstances, but keeping your knights between 18" and 24" from your opponent's units plays to the GKs' strengths. GKs at first glance appear like assault troops, but, by being armed with storm bolters they are very good medium range move and shoot troops.

A guess is never as good as a direct measure. Believe me, targeters are endlessly useful. IG no longer have them, Witchhunter IST's are the only other unit that has them (aside from Malleus IST's). Other armies would kill for the same ability, it's that potent.

GK's have to stay out of combat until the enemy unit is sufficiently shot up, then counter-assault them to deny charge bonuses. Using a targeter, you can precisely time your shooting+assault to finish off the enemy, or know when you need to back up further to prevent getting charged.

It's also good for things like targeting an enemy unit thats well out of range, but is 'fast' or needs to get shot by your Dreadnought/Landraider lascannons. You pre-measure with the Justicar/IST's, then know whether you can shoot it with your Dreadnought/Landraider.

It depends. If you're fighting an army with superior numbers/better in close-combat, 'kiting' (ie moving sideways and shooting them) is very effective.

If you're in Landraiders (ie mechanised), then shooting+assaulting the remnants is the way to go.
