Power weapons vs tanks and walkers

I have read the rules book and my space marine codex and I just can't find where it says anything about what type of strength bonus a power weapon gives against armor. I know it says in the description that it ignores armor but I take that to mean vs. an infantry model with an armor save. A power fist doubles the attackers strength and so this is added to an armor penetration roll right? If so, what bonus does a power weapon give? Am I all wrong on this matter? I am a new player and just can't find the answer anywhere.

Power weapons give no strength bonus with the exception of the Power Fist which doubles the users strength.

Thats right, the power weapon only ignores armour of infantry and mounted infantry.

Yes the strength bonus is added to armour penetration roll.

None what so ever.

Don't fret, everyone has to start somewhere, just lurk around this forum for a while and you'll find all the answers you want... and probally quite a few you don't ;)

This game is a constant compromise between playability, realism and gamebalance.

It might not make too much sense that a powerweapon ignores armour on infantry, but does nothing to armour on vehicles. It has most likely been decided with gamebalance in mind.

In the end this discussion is complelety irrelevant, as discussions on sense in our science fiction game are mostly pointless.

Because it makes perfect sense for a power weapon to cut through a terminator like butter, yet can't cut a truck or rhino.

It does, actually. Run a powersword straight through a terminator, and it's _really_ hard to miss the guy inside. Run that same power sword to the hilt through the side of a tank, and it's rather analogous to trying to kill someone by stabbing them with a nail. Sure, it's possible to do serious harm, but even if you know right where the best places to stab are, due to the size of the nail, it's not going to be easy, and it's really not the right weapon for the job.

Aye, especially as in alot of 40k stories, power weapons do cut through hatches of tanks or legs of dreadnoughts.

Oh well, I can see it as a balancing issue, or a general game mechanic, str + ap dice vs vehicles, and as powerfist's Thunder hammer double str, just happens to make them useful vs vehicles too.

Now, sure, Land raider is tough all around, but do you really think 1 marine, or even a squad, couldn't do anything to it? I think 20 regular khorne berzerkes would do a bit of damage to a Land raider, even without a powerfist..... at the very least, immobolise its tracks with their corpses....

think about the scene in SW phantom menace, where they had to use lots of time and force to cut trough the blast doors with their sabers. the thicker the armor the more time it takes to cut trough it. The power weapon just have to melt lots of material and thats just not an easy done job.

And in the thick of battle it really isn't practical, given enough time an assault squad could easily wrench open the hatches of a land raider or similar transport and pop a grenade in (a real one, not the pansy ones grenades used on the table top), but it's going to be stupidly difficult with those pesky marines shooting you to ribbons with their bolters, best go kill them first, wait, now there's another squad over there.. Ahhh forget the Land Raider :(.
