Need Help on Dread Load-out?

I'm wanting to get my fellow Wolf brothers opinions. I'm thinking of adding a Dread to my Army to help bring it up from 1500 to 1750 for a game this weekend. I have a Ven Dread (The old Bjorn Model) with a HF/CCW & Assault Cannon, should I load the norm Dread the same way or I have 2 FW TL Autocannons that I had bought with the idea of using it as a "Assaulting Tank" that when assaulted gets hit on front armor. I will be playing against a Nid Army that will be the biggest factor.

1500pt Army List

HQ

Rune Priest-PW-PP

VEN Dread-HF/CCW-AsC

Troops

10-Bloodclaws w/ Rhino

10-Greyhunters w/Rhino

7- Greyhunters

Leman Russ EXterminator-TL Auto/LC/HB sides

5-Long Fangs 2x ML 2xLC PL w/PW-BG

5-WGBG 2xPW 2xCCW 4xBG w/Rune Priest

Adding WGBL-PW-BG to the 7-GH's and a Rhino. Thought about the Dread or a couple more GH's & a 3-man BC squad w/ Jump packs w/ 2-PF

Well, one thing to keep in mind:

Going from 1500 to 1750, you need to drop in another HQ choice.

That being said, if you keep the new HQ choice under 100 pts, throw in a TLHF/HF dread in a drop pod. Lots o dead buggies as soon as that bad boy comes down.

A few other tweaks i'd suggest:

drop the wgbg for another unit of troops. Objectives are good.

Drop the long fangs for a whirlwind and a vindicator. Much much more bang and survivability for your buck. cant go wrong there.

I've recently fielded a twin autocannon dread and was more than impressed with his performance. It's also cheap enough that you've got room for the other HQ that you need.

Against 'nids, anything with a 4+ save is dead. Use your range to stay out of combat and target his warriors and anything else with a 4+ or worst save. If he's got a lot of TMC with 3+ save, at S7 you'll be forcing a lot of armor saves.

Against other armies, it's also very useful. It'll take down light vehicles like nobodies business, speed freak player will crap their pants! Use your range and got after flanks against other tanks. Target expensive troops and force armor saves.

The 2x TLAC dread, IMO a really good investment and usually doesn't have too many problems making it's points back.

I actually use the AoBR loadout of MM and SB. Odd I know, but its suprisingly effective. Its suprisoing how many people are stupid enough, that when they see a wolf list like mine (few heavy weapons), they run their HQ outside of a unit. Ive killed a fair share of Marine commanders that way

Thanks for all the input guys! I am going to redo some stuff and see how it goes. Keep the advice coming, I will listen to any & all help I get, been out of 40K since end of 3rd start of 4th ed.

Been thinking of getting rid of the WGBG & replacing them. For the cost I can Field another 10-BC w/BP\CCW so I'll probably do it this game.

Like my LF's b/c I use the split fire to target tanks/Monsters with LC's and target troops with the ML's, always placing them in 4+ or 5+ cover. Everyone that I have played hates me for that one. But Thanks for the intel might try it soon though.

Yeti: Looks like I am going to run the 2x TLAC & see how that does.

Will post again later tonite about the changes. Have to go to T-Ball now, Later guys.

Question:

Had an Idea of putting the rune priest w/ 10-BC and surrounding the Ven. Dread and using Strom Caller. The Question is if the unit is completely around the Ven. Dread, basically in a Circle would the Dread benefit from SC too?

Well, I think a lot of people have posted some really good points.

1. I definately understand what you are saying about splitting the fire from your LF's being a very fun thing. However, in a 1750 game, they are so much template fodder. Even when they are sitting in 4+ cover, if a template lands on your guys with any sort of ap to force the cover save, you are looking at 2-3 dead wolves (50%). and considering the points values of throwing in lascannons to the squad, that's pretty pricey. Typically the first casualty taken out is the pack leader, to conserve the points cost of the heavy weapons. That takes away the flexability of the unit right there. For the cost of the unit above (I dont have the dex on me, but I would wager it's around 230 pts? maybe a little less), you can take yourself a vindi and a whirlwind, which would give you some much needed template weapons to your list. Templates are very very importand in 5th ed. Vindis are wonderful at taking out power armored troops en masse and always make their points back for me if they dont get popped turn 1 (if you keep your 13 armor front towards anti tank weapons, and start them in cover, this chance can be greatly lowered). Whrilwinds are great for harassment, as well as taking out high cover save troops, like scouts (the new anti-cover save round is amazing). You also can pick each shot w/ a WW now before you shoot it. much much better than before.

2. Rune priests are a bit pricey for low points games, even 1750. If you take a WP w/ similar gear (ie, for you it would just be giving him a plasma pistol) you have a 4+ invuln save, pw and PP for LESS points than a base rune priest with no gear at all.

3. LR exterminators are fun feeling tanks, but seeing as we will not get the upgrade that the IG will be getting on their russes, they really really are not worth the points cost. At only 25ish points below a land raider, considering swapping out the exterminator for one of the toughest tanks in the game (and, if you drop the WGBG for bloodclaws, throw in a WP to the unit and mount them in a LRC, you have a SERIOUSLY hard hitting unit (heck, you can even throw in the WGBL for good measure if you really want lol)).

4. I think personally that 2 rhino mounted GH's would be enough for you. Consider having the 7 man pack w/ a ranged gear set up (bolters and a plasma gun) and have them be effective objective holders for your side of the board. They dont need mobility if they will just sit on an objective. This will free up some more points for you to play with.

5. Avoid jump pack BC's like the plague. They pay the points for having T5, but dont get that or the turbo charge invuln save that comes with being a biker. I would say consider making them actual bikers, using the points from the above mentioned rhino drop to give your WGBL a bike, and now you have a very fast, brutally hard hitting unit (though for a WGBL on a bike, consider a wolf pelt, frost blade, bolt pistol and bike: hits like a truck in CC).

Hey guys back again!

1st, Let me say once again Thanks for the input it is very much appreciated! And I hope that nobody thinks I am not considering their advice. I am working on alot of mini's at the moment.

2nd, I am a big advocate of putting a finished army on the board, I try my best to have all my mini's completed, just a preference of mine...LOL.

Here's what I have out side of the above list. About 13 completed WG (can be altered to whatever), a table-top standard Vindy, 1-Attack Bike, 2-regular Bikes, 4-Scouts w/BP/CCW/MB, Dread w/ CCW/HF-AsC & have 2x TLAC, 3-BC's w/ Jumppacks 2xPF/CCW & 1-BP/CCW, & WGBL w/ PF/BG.

I am working on a basic LR for a squad of BC's that I got a deal on, just needs alot of TLC. I am also putting together a Razorback w/ LC/HB & a Whrilwind (primed). They need paint & finishing touches. I have alot of WIP mini's: 5-bike's, 1-Attack Bike, a very old Predator, 20-25 Marines, 3-Landspeeders, 14-Termies, Rune Preist in TDA, WL on "Trike", and 5-6 Fen Wolves. So as you can see I have more than enough to make one hellova Space Wolf Army just not enough time...if only I could get that darn Time Machine working.......
