Night Lords

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I recently aquired my old Chaos Army. (It was held for me while I was deployed) And after looking at the codex I do not feel that I can effectively play any of the non dedicated legions effectively or fluffly. I am leaning towards the Night Lords as a friend of mine suggested using the downloadable BA Codex. What I am wondering is this; is using the BA Codex and painting them as night lords legal? Thanks in advance for the help.

Sure it's legal.

Raptors with icons of khorne are quite fun to use. Add some Lords withJump Pack and rhino with 10 csm and you're good to go.

Sure it's not very competetive. But still fun, and you have chances against anything ( you just need to play really good ). Thats the issue.

Welcome home ;)

I think several people use the BA's dex to represent NL's since this new dex came out. But others seem to represent them with C:csm pretty well.

However you decide to represent them have fun, you deserve it.

I love raptors, and the BA codex (I like horde+melee+kraking stuff) so NL's using those rules, and being ruthless/tactical can more than be made up with the additional combat squads rules and having the possessed(er I mean death company) take the field with some rending.

Dish out about 20 men per 500 points or so and you should be alright in the long run. Having 17 or so per 500 is also ok, but you may lack bodies to face specialists. Eat stuff up unit by unit and dont be shy, get in ASAP and risk those dangerous terrain rolls. Dwindling may cost you more then a few marines on 1 rolls if your forced to take an extra round of shooting. So its a lose/lose situation in heavy terrain.

Also, if you want to be real nasty. Abuse the allies rules and use SoB/GK allies, even the "radical inquisitor stuff" to represent some demonology in your force! (Even traitor guard with storm troopers/armored SoB"initiates")

I am however kidding by saying abuse. =p

Laters.

My Night Lords have been doing pretty good so far. I don't play in torunaments, though, just guys at the local GW shop. Having every Marine in the army have 2 attacks is pretty nice, even the ones with special or heavy weapons have extra CCWs. When I am going back to playing regular Space Marines I allways feel the loss of the extra attacks. Tactical Marines are just not that exciting in combat.

I play Night Lords since 2nd Edition, where Chaos did nothave any jump pack units at all, so Raptors are still not exactly the most fluffy Chaos unit to me. I am currently experimenting with a squad of Raptors with an Icon of Khorne, and so far they have done ok. They have not had a chance to really prove themselves yet.

I think it gets exaggerated just how common Raptors were in the VIII Legion.

Sure, Sahaal claims to have invented/led them, but that strikes me as dubious anyway; a captain shaping the whole way a Legion made war? With Night Haunter's choice in the matter never mentioned? One captain's ideas spreading to the other Legions, influencing the decisions and tactics of all those other Primarchs? Hmm. Maybe, maybe not.

The main reason it's pretty clearly exaggerated is the fact that jump packs were very rare back in the pre-Heresy and Horus Heresy eras. They're not exactly all that common even now, but back then, they were pretty scarce. The Night Lords were almost certainly made up of Tactical Squads, as much as any Legion. Their themes are terrorism, hit-and-run, and rapid attacks, with terror tactics being their number 1 foundation.

Now, on the battlefield, striking fast and hard is just as likely to be drop pods and Thunderhawks, but on the gaming table, it often translates to Fast Attack choices, so it's understandable why there's so much Raptor-love when you add that with Sahaal's claims. And I'd definitely have a higher percentage of Raptors in my own Night Lords force, out of a nod of respect to Sahaal's apparent influence. But overall, naw, there's generally a bit of exaggeration with this issue.

@Preysight: Yeah, Drop Pod Assault, Teleport attack, Rhino Rush, Land Rider Spearhead, Jump Infantry Thunderhawk Drop - all those are common for Night Lords.

Thats why NL could be played with Chaos Codex - all units in transport/using jump packs and you're good to go. 3(transported units)/2(jump infantry units)/1(teleporting units) seems like a good ratio IMO.
