Why no helmets?

Greetings, Sons of Russ.

I'm currently finishing up with the Space Wolves Omnibus, and was wondering why you Wolves never wear helmets, or at least it seems that way.

Ragnar spends a lot of time smelling everything, so I thought maybe it's because the filtration and atmosphere gear in the helm would block out that vital sense?

Or is it purely an honour/bravery thing? Covering your head is seen as a cowardly act?

I see plenty of rank-and-file Wolves in the GW art and studio photos with helms on, but none in the fluff.

Thanks for any info/fluff you can provide.

plus our mighty beards deflect shots better than any helmet

"Fenrisian Beards:

Prized statements of a Space Wolf's age and experience, in combat they allow for a 1+ Invulnerable Save that cannot be ignored. In addition, spilled ale or roast may be collected in said beard and stored for later. Some Inquisition reports include a particularly curious effect on the Sisters of Battle and select Dark Angels."

You sir, win the thread. *passes keg of ale to Jeff* Well done brother, well done.

Now I'm off to try out that third bit on Fenrisian beards in that nearby Sororitas camp. Just hope I don't run into any Dark Angels on the way there... or Melissa for that matter. :o I just managed to repaint my armor after the last multi-melta burst she shot at me.

I guess I'm kind of strange because I hate really long beards on my Wolf minis. I think the fact that Wolves will need to wear helmets in certain circumstances demands a shorter more well kept beard. I know it's silly to bring realism into 40K but I just cannot help myself.

About one in five of my marines is helmetless, the rest keep them on for safety reasons, but those whose senses are keenest can take them off.

I have a habit of modelling them clipped to the thigh though, just in case they need them you know?

The many reasons Wolves need not helmets:

1. Chicks dig beards. Helmet =/= Beardyness.

 Our senses are that awesome.

c) Hiding under a tin can is for wussies, dress wearers and Guardsmen.

iv: Beards are better than pouches for spare food, ale, and other gubbinz.

It looks awesome.

Oddly enough I am with you on that.

Hey lets go into the vacuum of space and kill some ORKZ!!!! ...oooh what...Furgus cant, hes beard is too long get a proper seal on his helmet...maybe next time Furgus!

I'm in the disciplined Marines wear helmets camp. Every miniature in my army has a helmet except for the metal Ragnar and Games Day Wolf Priest miniatures, and also the Wolf Scouts for obvious reasons.

Just personal taste, but I prefer a little more subtlety for the Vikings in Space archetype.

Regards,

Valerian

Since we're known for our discipline, HA! Ahhh Brother, you must lighten up with your Great Company, else you might find yourself out of place amongst some of our more...expressive members. Looking at you Bran.

The only reason I wear my Wolf-Skull helmet is for the look on heretic's face when I charge them, get nice and personal.

Ok i hate to be serious here. But once the marines test the atmosphere and find the air breathable they can remove their helmets. I'm sure they have small microphones or something like that for when they are helmetless. Because lets be honest, those helmets arent designed to stop a direct shot to the head. If you've looked at a lot of art work there are plenty of helms with holes blown clean through.
