Why no helmets?

No helmets for a marine:

Flashes of light, the instant a shot fired from a distance is spotted a marine will flinch to avoid a deathblow within the milleseconds the shot reaches the marine/before the heat from the laser accumilates completely.

Possible? Perhaps... If assassins with similar stats and perhaps younger age can dodge bullets, then maybe some more experienced marines could do so. Their armor moves almost as fast as they do, impulses from the black carapace. So its possible...

Ok i hate to be serious here. But once the marines test the atmosphere and find the air breathable they can remove their helmets. I'm sure they have small microphones or something like that for when they are helmetless. Because lets be honest, those helmets arent designed to stop a direct shot to the head. If you've looked at a lot of art work there are plenty of helms with holes blown clean through.

Theres plenty of artwork with chestplates that have holes blown through them... and?

And you have to assume the helmets don't have as thick of ceramite on them as the chest plate. Unless you know marines that have heads the size of torsos. :)

actually, the address in the second HH novel why space marines, especially sergeants don't wear helmets: There's some huge creature they're fighing and the main character takes his helmet off. The remembrancer with them asks him why and he says something like this:

"Well, this armor really isn't going to stop that thing's claws, and I'd rather see it with my own eyes and hear it with my own ears."

Helmets, even with all the gizmos, reduce sensitivity to the natural environment and especially, what has been referred too as, one's sixth sense.

Have a friend move silently and slowly towards you from behind. There will be a point, normally a couple of metres out, where you will sense them approaching. Now try it with a empty, upturned waste paper basket on your head and see how close they can get!

However, helmets can deflect things that would other wise smart a tadge :)

As I've reached nearly the end of the Omnibus now, I found a scene in which the usage of a helmet is described! Hurrah! It pretty much supports all of the info provided here regarding sensory deprivation and whatnot.

It's almost like you Wolves have already read your own book!

Wait, we have books?! B) When did that happen? I thought we still used Sagas.

They are Sagas, just this day in age, to many people get all upity about us just saying our stories. so they send some guy who they know we wont scare the pants off of to write them all down. only problem is that he usually gets lost i n translation and we have to slow down for him.
