Thinking of starting wolves,

Members of the Fang, I come to you in need of some help. I have recently acquired the Space Wolves dex, and then read up on the faqs posted here for 5th, and realize that I love it!! The Wolves have some incredible character and fluff, a great play style, and access to really great units. Also, in my Eye of Terror codex I started doing more reading on the 13th Company, now that I can read the reference points in Codex: Space Wolves.

I really think I would have a great time kickin it with Russ, but I can't decide between regular Wolves, with all their different fun toys, and masses of wolf guard, maybe the coolest special unit in the game, or the 13th, with it's piles of elite infantry, which I really enjoy, and it's fantastic background.

However, the 13th has no real armored support, like tanks, terminators, or even dreadnoughts. I really like dreadnoughts, terminators, and tanks. But, the appeal of wulfen packs, grey slayers, and storm claws is almost to much to ignore. Basically, the standard Space Wolves have access to all the toys I like to play with, but these things are all expensive, while 13th has tons of ultra uber (in fluff) infantry, getting the job done with cunning and ferocity, but without big shiny metal boxes.

Any convincing arguments to draw me either way? I won't likely be able to read or reply until seven or eight hours from now, so I hope for many enthusiastic replies from the most enthusiastic army players.

Sorry but i feel you v come at a bad time for this kind of info, truth be told, we cant give real advice at this time, if the rumers are correct we'll be getting a new dex this year and who knows what will happen to the 13th, and will the wolves get the extra's of the 13th like wulfen and wolves.

Id go normal wolves to be safe and you can always make a 13th list with them to play

Truely I would say at this point you should go with the regular wolves... they are gauranteed a codex in the future and are supported now. The models can be gotten ahold of without resorting to extensive modifications or great expense... and for most people who are wolf players the 13nth co is what happens when they keep going in the wolf mindset, perhaps towards the "to far" edge ;).

That being said a normal SW force can simulate many of the 13nth co units if you want to play as them, which doesnt work as well the other way around.

As for Grey slayers vs Grey Hunters, yeah slayers are more powerful... in that they get an extra attack. They also cost four points more a peice, well 3 after the bolter, and frankly dont have as many options. You can do most of the jobs a slayer will with a hunter. Stormclaws are the equivilant of a wolf gaurd bodygaurd pack.... and sub out fairly well that way, but once again diversity is on the side of the Hunters.

Thanks for the replies so far, and yeah I had heard all about the new dex coming out from lurking around the fang here. Diversity was what I was going for in my army anyway, and, upon reflection, it's just the unique fluff of the 13th combined with a much better set of studio paint jobs compared to standard space wolves color schemes that had me in a final tizz, but I got better.

I'm thinking when the new dex comes, it'll be my new army of choice, unless a Salamanders dex ever comes out.. ;)

See, and me it goes wolves, sons of dorn, sallies.... but I can understand.

On the upside a 750 force is pretty easy to grab... a dreadnaught, two packs of hunters, maybe with a rhino an the support tank of your choice will often do it... maybe a speeder or an attack bike.

Well, as there seems to be a lot of flexibility in the Wolves forces, you can go for a Codex Grey scheme, rather than the blue presented in the Codex. There's a lot of scope for "Lost" Companies and other groups, as well as the 13th.

My advice would basically be do as Grey Mage and others have suggested, and build a core infantry force that could go either way until we have concrete details on the new Codex.

and for most people who are wolf players the 13nth co is what happens when they keep going in the wolf mindset, perhaps towards the "to far" edge ;).

Thou doth speak well of me, Squishy Grey Mage. At least I think you're referring to me with that. ;)

Put you and your sock away, or I don't pass out flea collars this week!

13th Company + Sallies? I could see that being awesome.

Well, it'd pretty hard to put me away *tries to lift self up by the collar and leave, then falls flat on face, breaking flagstones* ;)

But to the OP, nice choice of Chapters, the two most "humanitarian" of them all. Granted, that's by Marine standards, so they're only a tiny bit less likely to kill you (until the Wulfen find you of course. After that you're fair game)

whats funny is i am in the process of doing the opposite...i have around 7500k of wolves, and am starting to finally start my salamander army.

and C-Rex, welcome to the fang! watch out for bran's sock!

Thanks for all the wonderful replies, dudes! I honestly think the Fang is one of the more...well...fun and friendly parts of the B&C, and this proves it. I dunno, I couldn't do DA because I don't like their attitudes. I couldn't do RG because they're too sneaky for my tastes. And I certainly couldn't do BA because I. Hate. Vampires. And besides, werewolves with guns... I can't think of a word that covers enough awesome.

Anyways, I have heard and seen much terrifying evidence of the feared Scalphunter's socks 'o doom, and will try to avoid that route. And Kieran...funny how we keep ending up opposite, but on the same side in the end.

Oh well, thanks for all the advice, brothers! I know it will become very usefu----ya know...my hands are looking hairier and i feel this burning in my chest...arggh...ughhh....AAWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

FOR RUSS! FOR THE WOLFTIME!!

Squishy? Im not squishy Bran... but your fragile brain casing may be, atleast when Im done with it ;).

But your crazy enough to have been recovered from the warp... and I like you for that.

Hmmm, maybe I'll turn my Tac Marines into Salamanders, since they are still painted Ultrasmurfs. :D

ULTRASMURFS!?!? what heresy can this be?

owning the most awesome of chapters (or legions to be percise) to the tin can blue boy wonders! what horrors will this crule universe unviel next???

Well, we have it on pretty good authority that the new Codex: Space Wolves will be released this fall, along with, presumably, some new miniatures and/or plastic upgrade sprues. Since you already play Salamanders, my advice to you is simply to be patient, wait for the fall release, and then start your new army. Until then, keep playing your Salamanders. Although you might get some good games in over the next few months with the current incarnation of the Space Wolves, or the alternate 13th Company list, in my opinion there really isn't much point in starting with the Wolves when the army list is so close to being changed.

See you in the fall,

Better than Dark Angels or Thousand Sons! Been wanting to repaint them anyway, just can't decide to what, if not Space Wolves (which they might end up as anyway).

Better TSons then Smurfs or DA.

Totally sigged, O Not So Squishy Grey Mage. ;)

Looks to be a lot of the good advice has been given, but I did notice a couple of things that might need clearing up.

Regular wolves can be a lot cheaper than 13th Coy. Yes, vehicles cost a pretty penny, but so too do Wulfen (40 USD for 5 models, metal) and Fenrisian Wolves (from Fantasy Dire Wolves, that's 10 USD for 2 and you'll want something like 20-40 of them).

5th gave a stealth buff to 13th Coy in the run rules, but a lot of tournament organizers no longer allow them to come out and play. It remains to be seen if they'll still be around after the end of the year (or so) except as a unit selection in the standard wolves dex.

I really recommend going regular wolves, for both versatility and a guarantee of being able to play. (at least, as close to a guarantee as one can get from this world)
