Sanguinius conversion

Recommended Posts

heres just a ruff job so far but I still need to do more GS work. If anyone knows how to get the GS really smooth on the surface that would be of great help?

I've just ordered the Griffin wings from GW which I'll hopefully have by next week.

Sorry if you haven't seen this picture you won't know what I'm working on. And I using it because its different and I always imagin primarchs in big chuncky armour which makes them more frightening to think something so big can move with speed and grace. Its not beautiful yet but is a start lol

Cheers for the comment.

Oooh Brother Tancred this is looking goood, as for the green stuff ive found that dipping your sculpting tool in water helps, ive yet to try it but doing the same with vasilene then rubbing off the excess is also meant to work well. May I ask where you go the legs and cloak from?
That is an amazing picture of Sanguinius but if I did a model to represent it I do the same as everyone else does which is the nightbringer body with danta body on top and greyknight arms slapped on. Its great to do that but I just wanted to do something different as well as us the Archaon model I had because I started to convert it into a different primarch but I got bored and left it in a draw.
That's my problem with Sanguinius; he's been stereotyped to the point that everyone just assumes he has to look a certain way. I for one like this version of the Primarch far more than his Nightbringer counterpart, I absolutely hate that look for some reason. I understand that he was renown for his regal appearance and angelic wings, but I like this tougher, stern look for Sanguinius. I think the helmet, while it's close to the Dark Angels Lion Helm, fits him well.
Col has made a much more military looking Sanguinius, very knightly and regal, while Smith's Sanguinius conveys his beauty, Col's conveys his presence. Also in Col's it looks like he is a real Death Dealer, and in Smiths he is dead... so there isn't much you can say with a dead body.
dont forget that after thousands of years and millions of retellings, the primarchs feats and appearance becomes more and more exaggerated with each retelling. "a million feet tall with a thousand wings and a halo brighter than the sun" and so forth. I mean, look at Angron's stats from Apoc, he's rather "meh". that said, im not a huge fan of the Archaon body, its sculpted poorly in my opinion, and his pose needs work, it honestly looks like he's in the midst of a jig at the moment.

the instant i saw this WIP mini i knew exactly where you got the idea :eek i saw that picture too at the hall of honor a few weeks ago.

it's nice but as mentioned before not very Sanguinius like. the painting looks more primarch quality so maybe you can try to beef him up some more.

Cheers for the comments so far, qucik update:

The sword was extremally tricky to put on, I had to change the arm completely to do it. To answer several peoples questions the who thing is the Gamesday Archaon model on foot but with the arms sawn off and the sculls on its chessed filed off.

Cheers

It's an excelent model and conversion but it just looks more like the Lion than Sanguinius to me, I don't think because it doesn't look like the previous artwork, I think it's because the armor is just too bulky to look like it could easily fly about without having some seriously massive wings. Perhaps why the previous artwork shows Sanguinius with sleek, minimalistic and form fitting armor.

This really more reminds me of the Dark Angels artwork like this:

Anyway that's just how it looks to me, still a great model, very nice conversion and it matches the reference artwork nicely.

My only suggestion for improvement is that the torso looks a little awkward, I think because the plastic part is just stuck onto GS robes, perhaps if you put some like torso ribbing details just showing beneath the robe as it's drawn over the armor that would make the Archaeon model mesh better with the marine parts.

The body doesn't look bulky enough and the right shoulder pad is the same way. Otherwise it looks pretty sweet so far.

What wings are you going to use? Probably the only ones true to the drawing would be the Forge World LoC wings... when it comes out. Expensive conversion. Maybe scratchbuild?

And will there be an Ultimate Gate diorama? Not including the Gate of course, since to scale that would be... very big.

I know real-life anatomy and 40k are not the best friends, but his torso, more precisely the greenstuffed section, is way to long/high, which makes the pose a little awkward and the arms too short.

Maybe remove about half to twothirds of it and then redo the mid-section, that would improve the pose and overall look of the model. Look at yourself in a mirror and where your arms+hands end, then look at your mini and compare.

Just suggestions though, it already looks good, just could look a lot better. ^^
