To plasma pistol or not to plasma pistol

How often do you kit out your grey hunters with the 2 plasma pistols they are allowed to be equipped? I do it quite often but I have been thinking to save points it may be better to only equip them against certain enemies, ie chaos and other heavily armored baddies. What do you think?

If they are long range bolters/shooty kind who's there to take objectives, then no.

If they are close range assault types, then yes, to soften up the targets...

Unless I'm playing against Eldar/IG or similar in which case I don't bother...

Against anything with T4 or better and/or 3+ saves I take them...

I just gotta love the PP's. today i played against GK's and in the last turn i shot at my opponents allied predator with my GH's PP's and PG and scored 3 penetrating hits. I then rolled 2 5's and a 6 so even if that was all they did all game, (which it wasn't) it did save me from trying to absorb 3 LC shots in his last turn! so imho always worth taking them
I take one in my standard "shooty squad" along with a plasma rifle and a powerfist, and 8 bolters. It gives a little more close range oomph, light tank hunting, an extra attack to even out the one lost with the rifle, and helps me vs nidzilla etc.
My standard GH set up is 7 marines with 2 x plasma pistols, 1 Meltagun and the rest armed with bolters. They are close range fire support only and with the two pistols its just awesome being able to lay down some heavy AP firepower on MEQ troops etc. Even light tanks will stay clear of them as they can easily gun down AV 10 and and 11 vehicles. ***WARNING WARNING*** Be prepared to lose at least one hand per game whilst firing these bad boys !! :)

I almost never buy them because I almost never shoot before charging into assault. I don't know if it's the opponents I play that are really good at measuring distances or if it's just Murphy's Law ... but everytime I'm about to charge, there's only 1 or 2 models in charge range. So I don't shoot to make sure he doesn't remove them and leave me stranded in no-man's land with a finger up my nose!

About the only place I'd really consider it, and semi-frequently use them, is on OBEL Wolf Scouts. Half the time you show up so close you can practically tap them on the shoulder, so loosing a few guys won't make you fail a charge and with the limited number of scouts, a few less guys on the other side helps in CC.

I always field them and put them on the PowerFists. That way you have 6-7 Cannon Fodder to keep them in play and shooting. It's always handy tohave 2 strength 7 Ap2 shots. They have won me countless games at tourney too.

I use to do 2 with plasma pistols and 2 with fists but I played against a guy that keep them on the same model and it pays off better in the end. Even with over heats.

Perfect any one else who agreed, 'cause i read only two posts before replying, is on top of this already.

i will put in though, that if you are playing a smaller point game, it might not be a bad idea to have a GH squad that is some what mixed in capabilities, for example a squad of 8 or so with 3 bolters and a plasma gun, a plasma pistol, and a power weapon (the rest have bolt pistols). not really good at one thing but is very universal

Thats seems a bit risky in 5th as you have to allocate those wounds to the Plasma/Powerfist guy as well as the rest of the squad. It seems to me its more effective to spread those special weapons out amongst the squad now instead of risking it all to one unlucky dice roll.
