Weapons Platforms...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals....

Just been having a little play with my bits box and some bluetac and decided that a weapons platform for some of my iron warriors might be a nice idea. You know the sort of thing, one of their tech-heads has gone a little crazy with the welding and daemonic influences in putting several guns together on a platform in order to shoot down anyone wandering the way of an objective/forward base etc.

From a modelling point of view, it'd clear my box of a load of left over parts from tanks, dreadnaughts and the like as well as some spare parts of tank bulkheads, railings etc.

From a gaming point of view, how do you think this would stand up? Fluff wise, given the TL autocannon, assault cannon, missile launcher, lascannons, bolters, heavy bolters, Meltas and the like piling up in my box/were "salvaged" by Iron Warriors over the millenia in the way they seem to.

Points wise, I was thinking that as it would have to have 1 operative/firer and maybe 1 loader, You're probably talking 50 or 60 pts for just the base and CSMs to use it + whatever the codex costs for each gun, which could run up quite a way, depending how crazy a platform you wanted to build. Would it need an armour value? Or would opponents just be firing at the operatives? Kill 2 operatives, it's useless. Kill 1 and the other has to roll a D6 at the start of each turn it wants to fire. On the first turn a roll of 1 means all ammo is spent and he must spend that turn reloading; a 2+ meaning he carries on. For every turn after that, if a 1 is not rolled, he has a -1 on each roll (ie 2nd turn he has to roll a 3+, 3rd turn a 4+ etc). You could in essence, go wild with all sorts of differing heavy weapons on there, but it being that it can only fire at 1 target at a time, given how it only has one guy targeting it.

Thoughts? Ideas? If it'd a dead duck, please say so... it may just be me with waaaay too much time on my hands and an overcrowded bits box.

There are already rules in place for weapon batteries - see your big rule book. Make the basic unit one guy per weapon and have an option to add ablative crew up to two crew per weapon.

Or, if you wanted automated turrets, see the Tarantula Sentry Guns in the downloadable Imperial Armour 2 update.

I like the Oblits idea, but i was thinking more of a "1 trigger fires all" kind of platform... what does everyone think? Or would the Oblits work better? What I currently have blutacked together wouldn't fit on a 40mm base... closer to a 60mm maybe...
What you could do... if you really wanted to go with the idea of an Oblit counts-as... is make some sort of platform with an Iron Warriors engineer operating a turret, and give it spindle spider-like legs. In essence, a small Defiler, only man-operated. It's definitely look nifty.

I'd got with Obliterator rules if you want to use them in normal games (especially pickup and tourney games). The two wounds and save would be from the "field generator" in the gun platform. Doesn't matter if they are a bit big for a 40mm bases, since its an "opponent consent" conversion anyhow. I doubt many people would complain that you made your oblits easier targets.

For Apocalypse games, you could field them as Thudfire Cannons (I think its called) or write up a custom datasheet. However, I would steer clear of "one trigger fires all" because typically a single model can only fire one weapon, unless an MC or vehicle. Maybe take a cue from orcs and give the weapon random variable stats... or, chaos being more technical, player chosen variable stats like this:

Multi Cannon: 48", Str X+2, AP X, heavy 3, twinlinked, "gets hot"

special- X can be any desired number from 0 to 7. AP 7 counts as AP -. AP 0 counts as AP 1 and ignores cover.
