Stuck between 2 choices

Now, i know i want to make a Pre-Heresy army. But i'm having difficulty choosing between the two.

It's either i go with

a) Raven Guard - for the same reasons i play them, i love the fluff, their way of war, Drop pods and so on. I love the black, but i'm worried that it might be a little bland from the painting point of view.

or

b ) Night Lords - again, i love the fluff, their way of war. If i do this, i'll be using the Chaos codex. I really like the colour scheme, i know the colour alone will make it a very visually stunning army.

Which would you guys go for?

Also, are there other considerations i should take into account when choosing which pre-heresy army to play?

I would stick with RG, and just write of the heraldry as the independence between companies. That way you could use them together if you want. It would also give you a really good chance to count the pre-heresy marines as veterans if you felt so inclined, maybe even for the first company datasheet.

Personally, if it was me, I would make a tattered beat up force, like a forever frozen snap shot of them fighting at Istvaan. I would limit my choices on units as they would have been there for the landing, but it is the defining moment of the Raven Guard in the Heresy, returning to re-pacify Istvaan, but this time fighting their former brothers.

If you went with the Raven Guard, then you could have some mutants as the failed cloning and gene augmentation of Coraxs experiments. If you want Pre-Heresy rules, check out tempusfugitives.com, and download the Age of the Emperor' pack, though you do have to be a member.

Interesting idea Marshal,

Granted, it's not quite my thing. The purpose of me making a pre-heresy army is to really capture that feeling of glory of the old days. I was thinking of getting jetbikes as well. If i do decide to do Raven Guard, then i wouldn't have the abominations. Not Glorious enough.

As for the night lords, personally i don't mind C:CSM.

I think all Legions had jetbikes, but since Corax and Horus were never close, the Raven Guard may not have been on his 'friends list' for new supplies, if you know what I mean.

The thing about a Pre-Heresy army is you can have all of those things you have always wanted in you army. The best thing is if you want to use the Chaos Codex, go for it, it is pre-heresy!

If you check out that website I mentioned earlier, they have some nice playtested rules and well thought out characters. I would like to go for a battered Istvaan snapshot, like Marshal suggested, but this time for my World Eaters for the expansion pack, 'The Seige of Terra' that Tempus are doing.
