Fire Lord Captain
Hi, I would normally consider my serge as completed. But now I have the wealth of talent that resides in the B&C at my disposal, I was wondering what else could be done to improve it? (I know a lot could). Also the termie is not finished by a mile, any tips there? Not the best of photos but.. Oh well. http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l196/Donedy/stuff005.jpg http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l196/Donedy/stuff006.jpg Thanks for looking. Fire Lord Captain
Sergeant reminds me of this certain guy... Ronald...something. Ha thanks! The flash does make them appear brighter than they actually are. Anyone have any tips? Stormreaver
Don't use flash, use external lighting ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167029-my-fire-lords-sergeant-and-bos-termie/#findComment-1967789 Share on other sites
Karitas
Seems to me like there nothing wrong with your brush control as the areas are clearly defined and neat. What you need to learn is the properties of your paint, i think. It would help us to suggest changes to your process if you outline what you do already ;) a few things you could try - Thin your paint, and be patient with coverage over 2-5 coats, rather than using it neat and covering immediately. try this pattern - base coat with a few thin coats (5 :1) wash with 1-2 coats of a darker tone using less thinned paint (3:1) highlight the raised areas using the base coat. mix a less thinned paint (3:1) with a little lighter colour and go over a smaller area of the raised portions as highlight that should stop detail areas like the chest eagle looking a bit flat. Fire Lord Captain
Yes I need patience. I don't like doing lots of coats. I have just bought some GW foundation paints. Anyone find them useful? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167029-my-fire-lords-sergeant-and-bos-termie/#findComment-1967826 Share on other sites
greatcrusade08
Yes I need patience. I don't like doing lots of coats. I have just bought some GW foundation paints. Anyone find them useful? Yeah i use a grey foundation for alot of my scouts camo work, its great as a base coat, but can quite 'heavy', needs a bit of patience in its application. Instead of mixing with water, i apply a little and run a wet brush over the top, works just as well. jester_prince
Ive found the foundation paints worth their weight in gold. You still need to think them however, the magic with them however is you can thin them alot and still get excellent coverage, one or two coats max in my experience. I think a wash would help ronald *cough* McDonald *cough* even if the flash dosnt help. The GW washes are genius in my opinion and a watered down wash can help pick out all the details, sepia brown wash might look good on the yellow and a baal red could work on the red. ThomKovacs
I'd have to agree with jester_prince and advise gettings washes. Badab black is a godsend. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167029-my-fire-lords-sergeant-and-bos-termie/#findComment-1967977 Share on other sites
Fire Lord Captain
Thanks for all the replies. I did use a sepia brown for a wash actually but I must have a super bright flash. I'm a bit stuck as to what to put on the termies 'shield' on his left arm. Any ideas? @ thomkovacs : where would i apply the badab black? The Damned
Can you explain the difference between the termies color scheme and the sergeants? I'm not sure how they tie together. It seems like there is too much color on the termie. Wolf Priest Haelaeif
I agree with the Damned, the Termie is strange. That greenish metal colour just doesn't scream "Hard as nails" to me at all. I suggest going for another colour there entirely. But I really like Ronald - one thing you could do to still improve him would be to fineline the miniature, ie paint thin black lines between the different areas of the armour. That will help define the different sections and make the model more threedimensional. ThomKovacs
@ Fire Lord: I like to tone down metallics with the badab wash and also use it to add shadows in armour. I find it can just add a little more depth and is quick 'n' easy to do. Bloodstone
i believe a consistent color scheme would tie the two models perfectly... the terminator looks like he's from a totally different chapter. and the colors are extremely pastel, so using somethign to tone them down is perfect, using black wash is good, or you could go with glazing a darker color over. Kurasuke
If you look at the title, it might suggest that the two models are actually from different chapters. Fire Lord Captain
Yes the Termie is my attempt at Brotherhood of Steel (From fallout 1+2) armour. I'm going to paint my five termies in that colour and the rest of my army i will stick with the Fire Lords scheme. So my next purchase will be Badab Black. I have sepia brown which i used on the armour but it has made it appear 'rusty'.
