Messing with Chaos - I'm Pointing At You...1/21/12

Been at work on this Nurgle figure and a few other random Chaos pieces.

Haven't really ever done alot of Nurgle, so I thought abit about some things that make a piece Nurgle. Not sure that the head works with the model, probably switch it out with some nurgling head.

Yea I probably got a bit carried away with the poop tube/penis thing. The fly was definitely something I wanted to do on that loyal plasma pistol. Thanks for the kind words.

Next up, I've had this guy sitting on my desk for quite awhile now so I thought, I would finish him up a bit.

I love the Chaos Knights heads they are awesome looking and make for a neat different look, wasn't a fan of this one and had a few left over from my Fantasy Knights. I think this head is appropriately creepy for 40k, Its starting to grow on me.

Thats some fab GS-fu you got going on, and that first head works very well for nurgle....3 eyes makes it perfect in fact.

If I may ask, any tips on using GS to make the fabric on your second model?

Thanks

phill

Thanks Phill.

One of the things I do with the GS Fabric is to flatten it out on a piece of flexible film or foil or a plastic baggie. Once you get the general shape and flattened out you let it set up for a 5-10 minutes, peel it off and apply it where you want it. Then you can lightly manipulate it to fold and flow.

Some more Undivided in WIP. I think this may be the other guy's brother. This is another mini that has been sitting on my desk forever it seems, so I finished him up to get it off my desk. And again another Chaos Knight head that I at first really did not like, but on the CSM its actually quite creepy looking. This one has the cooler looking backpack.

After a couple Undecideds, its back to Nurgle.....

Some more messing around. This is another of my Nurgle conversions, a little different than the other. This time I made the base with a similar effect. The base minus the black plastic and GS tentacle is out of Apoxie Sculpt. I really am liking the mutated possessed bits, they for really evil looking items, mixed in a tabbard and some other skin/cloth bits on this one also.

these are very cool, the spore towers on the very first pic seem a little ungainly to me though

I meant for them to be that way going for that sort of Giger-esque Alien look. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.

These look good, but where is the paint?

I cranked out yet another Plaguemarine painting recipe the other day. Goes like this:

Knarloc Green over a black base coat

Camo Green

Black Wash

Camo Green

Rotting Flesh

Green Wash

Rotting Flesh

Vallejo Grey Green

Sepia Wash

Fix any rough spots with Camo Green, Rotting Flesh, and Grey Green finally use yellow glaze.

I'm sure it can be simplified. It looks pretty spiffy and the sepia and yellow wash make it pretty sickly but it stays dark thanks to the dark starting point. I have all sorts of Nurgle and misc. painting advice compiled here.

This was basically an excuse to use the new washes and produce something cool and different for the Diseased Sons.

Building some first....painting Black Orcs instead right now....maybe paint some of these much later. The building will continue though.

have you been to papanurgle.com yet? loads of ideas etc there

Yep...been there. I've also had the pleasure of studying Mike "The King of Nurgle" Butcher's models for years up close, as I game with him at number of events.

I was wondering if you would generously divulge how you happen to make the tears in the cloth, and how you created the rivets that look like they hold the cloth onto the armor? Also I was wondering what tools you used because I just finished a kroot holding a decapitated genestealer head and it came out quite well but I will take any advice to improve my future projects.

-Thanks for the great picks and conversions!

No problem. The cloth I typically do in a couple of steps or couple of different methods. Sometimes it works better to sculpt the cloth on the miniature, sometimes it works better to sculpt the piece of cloth on a piece of plastic foil/wrapper.

If you use the wrapper method use a little bit of water to dampen the wrapper, the reason for this is so that you can remove it prior to the putty curing (Although sometimes you may not want to). If you use a lot of water you can trap air bubbles and water bubbles between the putty and wrapper, that's no good for most applications. Smooth your putty using a smooth surface on side and colour shapers or sculpting tools with metal spatulas/spoon shaped ends. Sharpen the edges of the putty with the knife end of your sculpting tool. With the wrapper method on large pieces of cloth or capes, I will allow the piece to cure 5-10 minutes leaving it on the wrapper, then apply the piece directly to the model, by holding the wrapper. Coax gentle bends in the cape using the foil wrapper. I have even used tape to hold the foil in place while the putty is curing. After the putty is cured, gently peel off the foil. Tattered edges, use an Xacto or toothpick or straight pin.

I'll use a dull X-acto to do the the tattered edges by first cutting out a wedge of putty and the then use it to coax the putty into shape. For the holes I'll use a tooth pick like tool and gently poke the hole then move the tool around in the hole a little to make the torn hole.

A bit of a departure: Well this one really doesn't fit with the others, but since I'm messing around and this was in the bottom of bitz box on my desk, I thought I may as well finish it. There was a time when converting these fantasy chaos warriors into space wolves and/or chaos space marines was pretty popular. Most of the posing for these were not very dynamic, but they are larger than the normal space marine.

I really really hope that you won't mind my stating of an opinion, but the legs on this particular model looks a tad wonky...I'm not referring to the work you did but rather the way the legs were positioned makes for an awkward striding pose.

No worries there on the legs, that is one of the things that happens with this particular stagnant pose, and why really don't bother doing this type of conversion much any more.
