Messing with Chaos - I'm Pointing At You...1/21/12

Man I wish I could sculpt cloth like that, also do you paint models or just convert good looking ones ?

I paint but have been very much limiting that to Fantasy and Ancients army pieces as that is the game that I play. That said I still really enjoy building much more and 40k is always fun to build.

Here's one of my painted Wordbearers from a few years ago:

I'm building a couple of chaos pieces that I do plan to paint for competition next year.

Something can be said about Khorne. Of the warhammer realm of chaos, Khorne has always had the most appeal to me visually. The shear barbarity and deadliness of it, strikes me quite often.

So messing with chaos has moved in a Khorney direction. A simple kitbash, but its got that look about it.

Next quick Khorne conversion, this using a spare face plate from the blood letters.

Love the chainaxe guy, the bloodletter head works really well and I like how you've made that Space Wolf head work as a trophy. The guy above with the possessed body is cool too, although I probably would have filed his neck a bit shorter as the armour plating makes it look a bit oversized imo.

If you want a tip I found works, drill a hole in the bottom of that severed head, insert an appropriately bent length of paper clip into the hole and add layers of wood glue to it. After a bit of painting it makes fairly realistic ichor dripping from the wound :cuss

Did you sculpt the loin cloth on the second from brown stuff? I've been meaning to try some out.

yes. If you have trouble with GS, BS is much more forgiving for cloth and capes and such. You can also sand it.

I've done some similar stuff before, works pretty well, sometimes fragile though.

Been awhile since I updated. But I have been messing with Chaos Space Marines a bit.

I've had these Slaanesh bits for years and never really had a use for them until now. I love doing poses like this one. It screams chaos and come challenge me.

Again you don't always have to go completely over the top with green stuff sculpting to make interesting characters. Lots of times using the right bits in combination make for a very unique miniature. Also, had an Iron Warrior in mind while doing this one. Bionics and mail. An old OOP metal horned head. Possessed legs. The axe is a leftover Chaos Warrior Champion bit from Warhammer Fantasy. Some metal piping from Dragon Forge. Not much of anything in GS. Don't always need GS.

Some really great concepts and conversions :) You're painting is nice, clean and crisp too. May I ask how you painted the crimson armour for the Word Bearer, if you still remember, that is?

Cheers,

Oh I remember. I painted about 100 Khorne Demons in that color scheme back in 2008. Base coat was scorched brown. Then apply scab red like a base, then highlight 50/50 mix with scab and red gore, highlight red gore, highlight Vallejo Model Color Red, highlight 50/50 VMC Red and blood angels red (or Vallejo MC Carmine Red).

I'm digging deep in the bitz box and found this power maul. Very appropriate for bashing thos Imperial Loyalists.

I love this head, it screams chaos to me. The drapings are using a similar technique shown in my tutorial on sculpting cloth with GS.

The rivets/pins that look to be holding the cloth are done with a mechanical pencil. The spikes are favorite thing of mine for adding to the backpacks, they come from the chaos vehicle spike sprue.

As I build various things, I will often assemble a Chaos Space Marine leftover from 40k never played nor built in my bitz box, and use up left over bits of GS or other types of putty. I'm still a fan of 40k models and the fluff, meant to be another in an endless line of Word Bearers. I do like the possessed bits, lot of fun those are.

This is sort of a primer of sorts. I'm planning a return to 40k, building a new "Insert Color Here" Templar army. My new breed of 40k Templars will certainly not be Black and White and will not even be Blue and White.

The drapings on this marine are something that I will use with the Templars. All the new Templar bitz, will definitely make me sharpen up my game a bit, so that my sculpting won't look completely out of place. And again uses my tutorial from the previous post.

Thanks guys.

My bitz box is getting very small, less and less pieces all of time. Once gone I have no future plans to do chaos space marines.

As I was building the Crusaders and doing the tutorial on tabards and other cloth things in green stuff, I did up a bunch of little conversions. This is just one of that group. I used the techniques demonstrated in my tutorial for both the tabard and the draping on the leg.

More of these one shot chaos space marines to come.

I love that last model of yours, it's terrific!

And I must say that it's a real shame that you'll be leaving Chaos soon ^_^

Ah well, maybe we can convince you to stay longer :P

Thanks guys.

The possessed bits are very awesome looking pieces. I thought this made for an interesting pose. And I do like this head. A lot times your conversions do not need to be completely over the top. Very subtle ones often work, and give you that dynamic that you are looking for.
