Great Company

Hmm, I've been thinking, and looking around (my search-fu ain't strong enough to find any posts regarding this matter).

 

 

My Wolves are building towards a single Great Company, still yet to deside on whoms. Perhaps will even say it's an Lost Company and say it's "my own" fluffy so to say, though I would still like the ammount of stuff in it to be fluffy-correct. So, my questions to our great rune priests out there; what are the Great Companies numbers? My first thought was that they were rougly an Second Battle Company (in terms of organisation, ammount of Grey Hunters / Tacticals and so forth though then again, that might change from Company to Company. And by the way, with "numbers" I mean the ammount of squads of Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Dreadnoughts, Long Fangs, Scouts, etc they have. Not their total number in marines. Anyone have any knowladge in this matter? Due to the fact as I said, I'm building up towards a Great Company.

 

Currently I have

 

1x Wolf Lord

1x Wolf Guard Battle Leader

1x Rune Priest

1x Wolf Priest

3x Dreadnoughts

30x Grey Hunters

15x Blood Claws

8x Jet Pack Blood claws

10x Long Fangs

 

"Armory"

 

1x Typhoon Land Speeder

2x Rhino

1x Land Raider

3x Drop Pods

 

I know I am missing Wolf Guards, though working on those right now, will have to start with 10 Wolf Guard in TDA, 10 in PA. Perhaps I need more tanks, pods, transports etc? What do you guys think? Should this be an "Averge Sized Great Company?

There are tons of posts in this general area. I'll find you some links once the kids are asleep.

 

Its your great company, take what you feel works, anything from 50-1000 marines is generally accepted to be great company sized, the rule of thumb I use is does it look right all setup together or to heavy way one...

I'd say that's probably a little small for a true Great Company. It could be a Lost Company, battered by combat losses but still going. However, most estimates put a Great Company at slightly larger than a standard Marine Company, and capable of providing its own armoury. Also, many GC's seem to have Priests/Dreads attacted to them on a semi permanent basis.

 

To give you an idea of what I can field, as a smallish Great Company:

 

Wolf Lord

2 WGBL (1 PA, 1 TDA)

Wolf Priest (1PA, 1 TDA (WIP))

Rune Priest

Upwards of 30 Wolf Guard (I get around the 20 fluff rule by saying that the Priests bodyguards (each has 4) are not part of the Company, but are his personal guardians)

 

3 Dreads - hopefully expanding upwards

10 Scouts

 

3x 6 Grey Hunters, each with a Razorback

2x 8 Grey Hunters (1 Pack WIP)

2x 14 Blood Claws

 

6 Blood Claw Bikes (3 WIP)

Land Speeder

 

8 Long Fangs

 

Armoury

Vindicator

2 Predators

Land Raider Crusader

Land Raider Prometheous

Fellblade

1 more Razorback

I think it varies from about 150-250 men, mostly due to attrition of Blood Claws. It could be as small or as large as you want. Some think the Great Companies are up to 1000 men strong, but I think that's too high. They are reported to be larger than a Codex Astares company (roughly 100 men), but if that's 120 or 940, no one knows for certain.

 

It is known that Grey Hunters are the core and largest segment of the Great Company. So, to stick with the fluff, make sure there are more GHs than all other models combined.

and then attached units of long fangs/blood claws

 

remember that priests ,scouts and dreadnoughts are from the great wolfs household not the company one

I thought that old Great Company card had 12 Grey Hunter packs? I'll have to dig them out.

 

I do remember that the BC's and LF's were bought in groups of 30 models. (6 bases on each card)

 

So I built on the premise that a Great Company has roughly 200 Wolves.

My math for structure for a Co. is for every two full GH packs, there is one BC pack, and one LF pack.

Sounds reasonable, considering that a Great Company may have a 'normal' or 'average' number of ten or so Grey Hunter packs. At least that's what I imagine, when determining the size of a Space Wolves Great Company. Sure there are variables and differences between all the company compositions, but I see a Great Company around the 200-300 mark in terms of Space Marine manpower.

I just didn't know when to stop buying SW's and still don't....gotta love them.
