khairney
i had a small space wolf army donkeys of years ago, and im intending to start another army very soon, hopefully by the end of the week! but i was wondering about the shoulder pad colours used by different great companies. i know it would be ok for me to make up my own, but im a bit hopeless when it comes to making up the colours on a field of iconography, so i was wondering if anyone would care to help me out with any of their own ideas, or anything they have seen before. iv tried searching around, but my search-fu is uber weak. cheers all. Long Fang
The "accepted" amswer is of course bright yellow, but as we all know yellow is a pain to get right and you get anything else on it you're screwed :) Personally I use bleached bone. WG Vrox
First off I would suggest you pick a great company to represent, there are 12 great companies and a lost company if you want to do something unique. Start with that and we can give you some possible fluff on said company, at that point it maybe easier to pick colors traditional colors Red/White/Yellow/Black WG Vrox. Wolf Priest Haelaeif
Black, grey or space wolves grey (ie, the colour of the armour) are quite common. Red would be another option, but can make for bad contrast depending on the symbols colours. Jonny Wolf
IAW (in accordance with) our codex: Red and Yellow = Blood Claw Red and Black = Grey Hunter Black and White = Long Fang Black and Yellow = Wolf Guard I've put that color on the right shoulder pad and a full yellow on the left. But, as always, it's your company... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167215-great-company-colours/#findComment-1970319 Share on other sites
chancethunderfist
The easiest way, at least I've found, is to keep your great company shoulder pad (left side) grey, then add your symbol in black. Grey Mage
Only Ragnars is particularly yellow. The others may do other things... Ill note the great wolf has a grey shoulder pad on his boys. Mine, they use red. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167215-great-company-colours/#findComment-1970778 Share on other sites
Warhorse47
I started to use yellow and forgot how much I hate using it. Doesn't cover worth squat, so my wolves are getting red ! WG Vrox
Lol, yeah yellow is a pain, The only answer to it I found it being well, mellow about it, thin layers applied with a small brush, let dry for 30 min and then another and another and another and ANOTHER... woah! almost lost my zen there for a moment. WG Vrox
or pop a coat of bleached bone on first.. yep, yep, but still for a nice smooth yellow your going to need a few coats to make it yellow. Dread Wolf Master
I think you should just paint them however you want, i use black white and brass on mine, with like an urban camo pattern on their gauntlets and greaves, is it canon accurate? no, but who cares except fluff nazis. Crimson Devil
Which armor color scheme are you using? Codex grey, Shadow Grey, etc? My personal preference is to use medium blues and white with shadow grey. I don't care for the way red or yellow interacts with it. Where as with codex grey being a neutral color, you have a wider range of colors to work with. Or do your own scheme, that is what I did. It's your army after all. Why not just paint them blue and use C:SM ^_^ In truth, back in the day marines were routinely in some form of camo so it would still be good with anyone who actually knows their fluff... khairney
sorry iv not replied in a while, ma heads been full of mince recently. iv got a reasonable stab of painting my first grey hunters in years, but they still need alot of work! @ crimson devil. they are codex grey and fortress grey, but very lightly tinted by mixing in blue wash to the highlights. iv decided on the field of the company pad being a darkish red, using grimnars badge, but modifying slightly so i can still claim it was my cunning idea. the other pad uses the original squad type colours in different patterns for each squad. there will hopefully be some pics up soon, as they have become my COE project. cheers for yer help everyone. Skalver
If you look on page 20 of Codex Space Wolves there are photos of painted shoulder pads for 8 different great companies and 28 different pack markings (most of which could form the basis of a company badge quite easily). Some are quite intricate but they should give ideas. Colours generally seem to be Red, Yellow, Black, White, Grey though I am sure there are other options. Some of the chaos marine type layouts with a metallic colour and a good primary colour could look good on space wolves too, Gold / Silver / Bronze + Black / Blue / Red / White / Grey etc. The space marine chapter gallery on the GW site at http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/...amp;aId=9600100 shows a lot of different chapter variants, many of the colour schemes could also look pretty well on Space Wolf shoulderpads. Blood Ravens, Doom Eagles, Raptors, Silver Skulls, White Scars and White Minotaurs all look like they have shoulder colourings that might work on Space Wolves and possibly some of the others too.
