We are legion!

So I've finally got my black legions boxset in the post glued and sprayed most of my models.

So today I attempted my first model with some levels of success. I followed the GW site guide for painting Black Legion. I did the high lighting first with great difficulty I may add! And after doing, eyes, gun, chainsword etc and armour, I lost alot of highlighting detail, well pretty much all of it which is frustrating to say the least. So far I have the now unfinished model that i want to add highlight again and even more detail including a coat of paint to the gold to give it more detail.

Comments and advice are appreciated.

I've also started converting a Dreadnought.

What colours do you think I should use for highlighting?

Any other tips?

Codex grey usually works rather well for highlighting black. Shadow grey will give it a blue appearance if you're looking for that. If you did a first highlight of a grey-black 1:1 mix first and then a finer straight grey highlight it'd probably give a bit of a blend effect too.

Yeah on my first attempt on highlighting I didn't have it quite 50:50 and the grey appeared too bright

It's good I get to try again eh?

Also here's some more works in progress:

My two lords which are going to be drilled and magnetized in the near future. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3587/3484403958_bc6280e95c.jpg?v=0

And this is pretty much everything I have at the moment, minus 5 possessed and rhino (still not built).

I think black legion look good with a slightly blue highlight, it makes them look cold and sinister. It's got to be subtle to work, maybe using a space wolf grey+ black mix could work.

Your painting looks good and clean though, i look forward to seeing some more after you've defined the metalics.

Yeah I'm thinking of washing the weapons and the metals generally but I'm sure which wash to go with.

and maybe a slight blue wash to finish on the armour?

Right I'm almost finished for tonight, just done the skull trophy and i'll finish up with a wash.

A word on the golds. I cant really tell from the pictures of this, but it looks like you went straight from black to the gold as the gold seems pretty dark in spots. Try using Golden Yellow or Sunburst yellow first, then gold metal paint. It really brings out the contrast between the black and the gold. Really an opinion thing about the contrast, so just throwing it out there.

Plus I thought I should comment based on the name of your thread.

Yeah the golds are very much a work in progress. Once I've worked some more deepth into them I'm thinking of washing them. i've done a badab Black wash on the metallic stuff but I don't have a clue for the rest.

Oh and here is some progress pic.

I've done the first two coats on the skull and washed the armour, and it's a little more clean. Once I figure out how to use the camera abit better(read the manual I guess) I'll get some nicer pics.

Oh and Wearelegion, it's been drilled into my head after too many hours of DoW

Any way I'm about finished for tonight, thanks for the tips guys, I'm sure I'll be bothering the lot of you later probably. hehehe.

an easy way to do gold is paint chainmail then go over it with Tamiya clear yellow gives a good pop to it

A simple way of painting gold without to much mixing I use:

- Darkflesh

Just get enough on to cover the black undercoat

- Shining Gold

2 to 3 thin layers to get a good coverage

- Brown Inkt wash

they don't sell it anymore but gives a great depth

the same effect can be created with Ogryn Flesh wash

to get a more dark & gritty look use Devlan Mud wash

- Shining Gold (again)

Drybrush along the edges of the armour

For more highlights:

- Burnished Gold

Along the edges with a smaller (then previous) brush

- Milthril Silver

Instead of the BG or as an extreme extra highlight.

Good luck in painting!

Cheers,

Vandael

numero two has sunburst before shining gold. I'm not too sure the difference is worth it but it looks nice I think. *edit*

I probably will give a quick coat of sunburst on the main amour pieces though.

What do you guys think then?

face on the dread is cool, seems overly pronounced though, did you file down the original sarchophagus?

Yeah I cut it down a bit but it does look a little awkward. Might green stuff the edges to make it seem less pronounced.

  • 2 weeks later...

And I have returned! I've been a while studying at college etc and I finally got some time to do some modelling at the weekend, here's the result.

I've updated the first two plus three more works in progress.

So now I have to touch up a few minor spots, update the skulls with a possible dry brush and do the bases!

What do you guys think?

Nice work man,I would tone the gold down a bit though as it seems too bright but that might be the cam messing with the colors wich happens also a tip for the dread take the front of the sarchophagus off and add the chaos bit then fill the gaps I did the same switch on my dread and it looked wierd till I changed it.

  • 2 months later...

Hi guys! Just to say I'm back after a very busy period finishing college and I've been quietly working on my models.

I've worked my way to nine models complete, with my Aspiring champion's body complete and arms are a work in progress (with magnets).

I'll post some pics later with hopefully, and I'll have some with base material added.

Oh and I'll post some pics of my converted dread with a new CCW and improved face plate.
