bod626
The First one is kind of a makeshift barricade. Made from half a Loo Roll, a piece of corrugated card (base and for the thing with spikes), the spikes were taken from my brothers chaos rhino accesories sprue. Glued down to corrugated card and undercoated black. Second is A Bunker with a twin linked heavy bolter made from Oasis (Florists Foam),I use florists foam because you can spray it without it melting.. Easy. I cut a shape from the foam. Took the heavy bolter from my Razorback, chopped the ammo off. Glued the heavy bolter to the foam. Glued that to corrugated card. And Voila. Third is a sort of old exaust pipe that has been converted to a tower. Again using a Loo Roll Drew the outline onto it. Cut the Outline out. Cut a circle about the same size as the loo roll stuck some snapped toothpicks in to support the card and made some bullet holes. Any feedback or advice is well appreciated. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167688-terrain/ Share on other sites
Rottimus
So far everything looks ok. The key to terrain building is using old bits of warhammer/warhmmer 40k. You've built a good foundation. To tie it all in an make it complete looking you need to add debris. Bits of sprue chopped up to look like rubble is a good start, some flock etc Some ruined helmets, weapons, broken swords, grenades or general battlefield detritus always works. Things like rhino panels, textured bits like ammo box lids and all that jazz. Adding small details like these can make good terrain, like yours, really excellent terrain. bod626
Thanks, yeh ive stated to cut up some chaos marine heads and im going to put the ammo from the heavy bolters on the bunker. and the offcuts from the oasis are going on one piece. Thanks for the feedback because these are my first terrain pieces. Rapture747
I like them. My only suggestion would be to make some kind of mount for the heavy bolter like a bracket or tripod thing so that it will look like it can be turned to fire in more than one direction. bod626
Yea, I looked around for something but in the end i gave up and decided to mould something from the foam. like a disk that can rotate. Come to think of it I could use a nail with a piece of card atached. Thanks for the help. Black Raven
Try some fortress, bits like bolters and armor plates will realy fit on well. Maybe make it destroyed so bits fit it better and it's not an untakeable objective :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167688-terrain/#findComment-1977906 Share on other sites
bod626
Hey, Thanks for the input. I've kind of finished. I couldn't find my flock so i improvised and used this cork stuff. (It looks kind of bad but oh well) I Added some Waterslide transfers and some spare weaponry, a space marine torso and also a head. Here's the Bunker: I made it so the heavy bolter can rotate. Bit blurry. (sorry) Here's the barricade, all painted up. There's an old scout chainsword. A Backpack and also a shot of two of the transfers. A Space Marine Torso. Hope you like it. Please comment. verpine
Looks ok but are you going to paint the sprue bits? and also, the backpack looks like it magically attached to the side of the toilet paper roll.... bod626
Hey Yes the back pack has now had half a sword glued to it so it looks as though its being held on. I haven't yet worked out what the sprue bits could be from though. I'm currently trying to think of what else to build. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks. Fire Lord Captain
I think the bolter turret looks too far back. I think the barrels should point further forward as this would give a greater arc of fire. Rapture747
Try not to put things down just to fill space and remember that what is attached to a person might look different if it was cast aside (like those ammo things by the heavy bolter). What bits you use should depend on the scene that the terrain creates. Maybe that helme should be accompanied by some blood splatter and a pool on the ground to show that the silly marine who took it off got what he deserved. As far as abandoned and broken equipment goes, use it sparingly. If one of your terrain pieces was supposed to be the scene of a battle keep in mind that if there is a critical piece of equipment (like the backpack) then there should be some evidence of the individuals death as well (blood, body, head on a stick...). Somethings semi-easy to put down without it looking out of place are ammo and magazine as well as other empty supply crates/boxes. Remember that bullet holes are kind of random, so be random with them. Don't go out of your way to make them too arranged. Keep working at it until it looks like the little plastic people are actually fighting there. bod626
Hey I've decided not to have the backpack as it looks strange in any position because of the hole in the back. The sprue pieces are now painted gold as though it has come from a gold statue. I'm adding half a Space Marine to one of the terrain pieces so it could be an objective. But apart from that I'm about finished with those pieces of terrain. Currently thinking of making an ork hut, so any advice welcome. It could, potentially, be a converted space marine bunker. bod626
Hey, I've finished an old ruined Ork Building but it is not yet painted up. It's made from an old shoebox cut up and just stuck on a base. For the ladder i used a piece of card with some staples in it. So thats my latest project. any colour schemes would be appreciated. I will be adding some things to add some character to it. Thanks. Technoscream
Hi there, I think your most recent piece of terrain has some potential, and could end up looking like a good Orky hide out. I'll give you some suggestions: The armour plates on the outside are good, but dont space them out so much, orky tech normally has lots of overlapping plates, so get some of yours to overlap (maybe add one or two more to get this effect). Like you have done on one of your other pieces, you could use some sprue cut up small (a bit saller than on the bunker) along the outside and possibly inside edge of your walls to simulate rubble. Your ruined building has perfectly straight edges on the outside end of its 2 walls, its unlikely they would have survived so well. I would suggest cutting into them a little leaving them at the current width at the bottom and narrowing them at the top, with a little bit of a rough edge. like this for example: http://www.exodus-road.com/xcart/files/master/prodpics/xmarx/xmarx_ruined_skyscraper_6mm_terrain.jpg hope that helps Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167688-terrain/#findComment-1986913 Share on other sites
bod626
Hi, Not been on recently because I haven't had any(!) free time. Just a quick update: Took Technoscream's advice cut the edges a bit. :-) Any ideas would be gladly accepted. sword brethren
been looking through and it looks great! just one thought. you have machine gun holes, maybe you should have a few blast marks. i was thinking heavy bolter explosive shells rather than a rockets. just a thought. keep it up Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167688-terrain/#findComment-2012295 Share on other sites
