Lungboy
As the thread title says, is it better to ally in our Land Raiders from C: SM, rather than take them from C: DH in a pure GK army? For the same price, we then get free smoke launchers and searchlight, plus access to a pintle-mounted Multi Melta. The only downside seems to be if you wish to take extra armour, as it costs 15 rather than 5. Thoughts? edit: just noticed you can only ally in 1, and only if you ally in 2 troop squads too, which is a rather large outlay. Damn. Melissia
Simple: of course not. Because you can't. You cannot ally in any units from C:SM if you have Grey Knights units-- if you ally in Space MArines, then you can only use Inquisitors, stormies, assassins, daemonhosts, and an orbital bombardment. jeffersonian000
I've been experimenting with GK allied to SM so that I could test them legally in SM LR's of every variety without my opponent’s permission to use experimental rules, the thread for which can be found in the rules forum under “Duel Redeemers in a 1000pt list”. Also, there is a project thread currently going on this forum about updating the Daemonhunter Codex to a 5th Ed standard, which does include rules for using the current SM LR variants in a pure GK army. To date, I'm of the opinion that Redeemers just aren't as up to snuff as a Crusader, and neither replaces the usefulness of a God-Hammer for my personal play-style. Redeemers need to get close to be effective, which restricts a GK army to the role of assaulting every time rather than assaulting only when it’s the best option. Where I’m finding that Crusaders shine is that they can functionally act as a squad of Knights with their mobility and Hurricane bolters while both protecting and delivering an assault based Knight squad, preferably GKT’s. The God-Hammer still reigns as the best overall LR in my opinion due to the ability to stay far away if needed, to go to mid-range if needed, and to close if needed, making it the most flexible of all three variants. That being said, your mileage may very. I suggest just trying them out in friendly games to see if its balances or not. As an aside, I have to mention that there is a school of thought that says “2 Dreadnoughts are better than 1 Land Raider in a GK army”. If you find that LR’s aren’t working for you, take some Dreads instead and see if that fits your play-style better. Gah, i knew i'd missed some rule somewhere. Thanks. Ozybonza
Use the rules from the Imperial Armour 2 update (free - do a google search) and you have the newer, better rules anyway.
