Uggggh new rules!

So I ran across some rules debates while at work today and was reading them casually. Came across a rules verification regarding shooting at a transport, blowing it up, and then assaulting the unit that comes out.

So at my games shop, several times I have used outflank to get some melta gun goodness up nice and close to pop some transports to see the crew spill out. Having always heard you can only assault that which you shoot at and also having opponents prop up this rule, I have been left out in the open to be shot to hell the following turn instead of assaulting the unit that disembarked from the wreckage.

Lo and behold, I find out today that I can indeed use my huge 13th Co assault-e-peen to charge any units pouring out of a vehicle I have destroyed in the shooting phase! This is really going to change some things I have been facing against three players that have been running mechanized armies against me.

Yea, I am and old 3rd and 4th edition trying to get back into the game and working through the stuff in 5th. I really can't wait to pop the transport and then declare the assault next game. And then when contested, I have the page number to back it up.

SLAUGHTER!

I went for a few months thinking the old rule was right until someone did it to me. Now when I pop a transport and assault the guys inside, I always have to go to the rulebook to prove I can.

Here I was trawling your forum to see what the rumours about you guys' new codex might be, and I discover this little gem! It had entirely slipped my attention that my outflanking melta-toting bikers could pop open a transport and then assault the occupants inside. I've always been told that it's not allowed!
excuse the horribly initiate worthy question...

but if my OBEL scouts pop a tank, lets just say my mates hammerhead..

and i kill it in shooting phase... can i assault the skyray next to it in the assault phase?

No in this case the assault what you shoot applies since they are two separate units from the beginning of the turn.

But it does mean that if you blow a Leman Russ you can assault one of its squadron mates in the assault phase. :D

Oh wait...seriously?! So I outflank with my melta/powerfist carrying bikes, blow up the first Leman Russ in the squadron and then as long as it is within 6" charge range I can assault the second Leman Russ in the squadron? Ohhh damn this is gonna be sweet!

A squadron of vehicles is just like any other unit... so leman russes, speeders, etc..... Though there arent many of them.

Well a little more now that IG has come out. I am digging the squad thing so far since a couple of my squads run with two meltas and one powerfist. So the meltas hitting and penetrating ends up getting more then one vehicle on the damage chart as well as the powerfist and krak grenades on the assault.

At least that is how I see it.

Remember those hits are alocated just like any other.... so he cant just toss them on a single one and you dont have to declare wich melta is targetting what. Its got its ups and its down but meh, its better than nothin.

Yea, last IG I played I hit his tank squad with some meltas. Results were two hits. Allocated to two tanks, both penetrate. Popped one tank and knocked the main gun off the other. Later immobilized and then blew up remaining tank in close combat via melta bomb and then powerfist attacks.
