Are mutations on regular models fluffy?

I like the idea of modeling a few of my units with tentacles and such so as to have some flexibility with what I give them in a list. A tentacle can be a power weapon, a power fist, a lightning claw, or a regular CCW, plus it looks cool.

At first I only did this to one of my termies, since the tentacle was in the box, and it has worked out well since it is so flexible.

Recently digging through my bits box I found the left overs of my possessed CSM sprues, and on there are some cool "tentacle" type bits. Mostly look like crab claws and stuff, but could act the same as a tentacle, except on a regular CSM body. I thought this would be perfect for my aspiring champions as it would allow me to have one model that I could field with any number of weapons depending on the list I am making. Is this cool to do?

I figure I could justify it fluff wise by saying they are the aspiring champs first mutation on the road to daemonhood (or spawndon).

I think it works well, though it depends on the fluff or your legion/chapter. A newly turned renegade chapter wouldn't have many mutation if any at all, since they haven't yet had the time to earn the favour of the dark gods.

An older Legion such as the Death Gaurd, Word Bears, or even a renegade chapter like the Red Corsairs, they would probably have a bunch of guys running around with mutations.

I've done exactly the same and given muatations to all of my aspiring champs by simply using an arm from the possessed sprue. I think its definately fluffy as it shows the champs first step towards daemonic ascension, plus (as Moress has already stated) most of the original traitor legions would have many a chaos marine sprouting claws/tenticles/spikes etc.

Certainly, some legions find mutations/daemonic posession highly favourable such as the Black Legion and Word Bearers. So definately go for it

i think they're more than fluffy, i love seeing the older models with extra limbs...which kinda makes sense given the current equipment of standard CSM.

doesn't necessarily have to be a champion, with enough exposure of being in the Eye, more marines should be succumbing to spontaneous mutations.

I say totally go fluffy. Remember their is no specific thing a Close Combat Weapon has to be so I always make a claw hand or tentacle count as that. Really adds character to your models, as for Astalon question I think it is a little of both. As CSM get more corrupted they start to mutate, but I think often their gods give them "gifts" which they gladly take.
