Chaos Special Characters

Recommended Posts

I think one thing is that we pay a alot for our special characters, and they may be goood on their own, but unlike other armies SC they do nothing for the whole army or even the squad they are attached to. Part of the problem is that Gav Thorpe is a poor player and has a poor understanding of army list building and tactics (judging by WD battle reps.). "I want my SC's to be powerful" is a simple concept, having SC's that are interactive with the rest of the army is a more complicated concept that I think Gav Thorpe never even thought of.

Or, it could be a very conscious choice that reflects the personality of the characters and forces. Chaos SM special characters are "selfish"; they try to collect as much personal power as possible. Chaos SM troops are headstrong and have their own established fighting style; they don't change that style on the whims of the commander. Individual strength and lack of concern for others pretty much is THE central theme of the CSM codex.

On the other hand, several of the Chaos Daemons special characters have force-effecting rules that (again) well reflect the "personality" of that force.

Personally I'd like to see "army wide" effects toned down. A lot of them can have unexpected interactions or grow exponentially more powerful when applied to larger forces. At the very least, they should be limited in the number of units they effect, either by direct selection of those units, or by having a range of effect. For example, the fact that one "master of the fleet" can hold up literally dozens of reserve units in an Apocalypse game is stupid; his point cost clearly is pitched at games of maybe 2500 points and under. And in fact, I doubt anybody would even take one in a 1000 point game, since his value increases / decreases with the size of the enemy army.

I agree that eternal warrior should be a must on all these characters. Of course, i would expect their prices to rise accordingly. I'm not asking for overpowered special characters, just rules and point cost to atleast somewhat reflect fluff.

I'm trying to imagine what happens to a csm who tells his lord he wont do this or that because his personal preference how to fight is different from what the lord wants.

Typhus using the old terminator wound system where you take a wound with 2 dice and get rid of the lowest one for armor.

Thank you but between 2+ save 5 Toughness and Feel no Pain, he is already nearly invulnerable against small arms fire. His main weakness is powerfist.

No.

Sorry, but I'm growing sick and tired about the never-ending ramblings about how other codices are better than one's own, that they have better toys and better units and cooler characters.

Work with what you got. The Chaos codex has some very unique and very cool units and characters that can be very effective if used correctly.

If you want to use the Space Marine codex, then do it! With the Counts-As rule becoming more and more established with every new codex, most people will let you use it for your Chaos Marines anyway, as long as you don't mix them...

I know we tend to forget other 40k races here, as it is a PA-only board, but imagine how the Eldar might feel? There are the oldest race and have practised warp-magic for a longer time than anyone else, and as far as I understand it, both Ahriman and Tigurius can simply fry the hell out of any Eldar sorceror...

Or think of Dark Eldar. Imagine you started with them when the last codex came out four-thousand years ago? You'd be waiting until now for up-to-date rules and new stuff.

Somewhere down the road, there must have been a reason why you started playing Chaos. Remember it before you start crying about other kid's toys...

I think your post is very negative and borders on being rude.

I'm not going to sit here and argue with you about how powerful/useful the current chaos codex is. We've got some of the best troop options in the game (and troops are the game now). We've got a whole bunch of variety and a very capable list.

What I did say, and will continue to say is, that our special characters, when compared with the new stuff coming out, are lack luster. We've got amongst the most lore and rich background out of all the armies in 40k, and we're left with characters that tend to be over priced, under powered, and that simply don't stack up to their counterparts in other armies. While I can't understand how Ahriman could 'fry the hell' out of an Eldar special character, the Tigurius is exactly the sort of example I was speaking about. And I can imagine that when Codex Dark Eldar hits, it'll be more of the same.

I don't want some 'I win' button. I don't want an easy way out. I want character with well written background and suitable rules that allow them to be more than point sinks on the table top. What about that is so wrong?

heck more people take DPs than SCs :D SCs should be better.

IMO all special characters should be worse than regular options (by 5 - 20 points). And quote say that daemon princes need points increase (and maybe more options, to make them more varied - i would like to see cool shooty khorne daemon prince on his feets - without wings - among others).
