SM Parent List with GK Allies

Recommended Posts

Inspired by the GKT using Khan to give a squad Hit and Run and Furious Charge, I'm really considering building a SM Parent list with GK allies, instead of running my usual Pure GK.

HQ would be the Khan, with a couple of Sniper Scout squads as Troops. With an Elite Squad of GKT using one of the Ally slots.

After that, there's too much choice! A SM LRC for the GKT+Khan. But more GKT from the HQ slot? Or another SM IC? Ironclad Dread (with Drop Pod) for more Anti Tank. Or keep it cheap and take more (or bulk up to 10 men) Scouts?

Obviously up to two PAGK squads could be taken over normal Marines. Small Psycannon Squads, or more largre more CC orientated ones?

Thunderfire Cannons?

Or Inquisitors with IA Valkeries (or Valks/Vendettas in Apoc).

What would you do?

If you use the IA rules, yes.

Frogeworld have a free download of updated rules for IA2, an Inquisitorial Valkery is a Transport Choice for an Inqusitor and his Retinue, or a Stormtrooper Squad.

you naturally need permission however to do this,

I always thought having shrike would be cool, i mean infiltrating GKT with fleet would be cool

Sadly they wouldn't get Fleet, as that's Shirkes Chapter Tactics and the Grey Knights currently don't have any Combat Tactics to replace. :blink:

But the infiltration would be cool (but most probably frowned upon...).

Shirke + Khan for Infiltrating, FC, H&R?

Or another combination of SM ICs?

(Imagine an Apoc Super Unit with Lysander for bolter Drill, Kantor for +1A, Khan and Shrike! lol!)

I'd try to avoid using too many bells and whistles, as basic GKs and space marines are expensive (and effective) enough as it is.

I'd definitely go with two 8-man squads of PAGK, no frills. Walk 'em around, use 'em for anti-horde and reactionary/supportive CC. The psycannon squad is nice enough for pure GK lists, but space marines have so many better shooty options. For example, for 170pts you can get not one, but TWO dakka predators (autocannon, sponson heavy bolters), saving you about 55pts compared to a single six-man squad of PAGKs with 2 psycannons.

For your original two Troops, I honestly like Tac Squads better than scouts. But that's up to you. Either way, I think 2 basic Troops, plus the 2 PAGK squads, should be enough.

HQ would be probably some Special Character (whichever one has the ability you want to exploit). I'd buy GKTs with your Elite slot, so the Brother Captain doesn't give up an additional KP (and with the Spacie character, you really don't need a GM).

You could always ally-in a shooty inquisitor lord, or simply ignore the second HQ slot. I don't think you need more than one Spacie character, although maybe a more conventional IC (like a libbie to support your PAGK) could work. Probably better to have more bodies though.

HS is where you get the most choice. Unless you take Shrike, I'd definitely invest in either a Crusader or Redeemder for your GKT+special character. After that, dakka preds, whirlwinds, or thunderfire cannons will all work.

FA also gives you lots of choice. I think Bikers would work very well with PAGKs, as they are both very flexibility, reactionary units. Land Speeders are also always a good choice.

I've been playing around with a SM/GK list for the past few weeks. The core is a 1000pt list with a Librarian, 2 full Tactic squads at 200pts each, and 2 LR's at 250pts each. The this I add a 200pt PAGK squad, a third LR, and sometimes a 300pt GKT squad. For bigger games, I've added a flying-Canoness and a Seraphim squad. All together they represent the Chambers Militant of a combined Ordos Inquisitorial task force.

I've had 2 draws and the rest wins, as I test out running two Redeemers supported by a God-Hammer LR.

Thanks guys!

Ah, Reedemer or Crusader? :huh:

As for the Scouts, If going to be taking at least some PAGK, and I just don't see the point of adding Tacs alongside them. My PAGK will be Midrange/Counter Assault, and I see the Sniper Scouts as Long Range and able to threaten High T MCs.

Going for a SM Parent list is really just to 'buff' my GK and not to make a SM centric list. It's hard not to resist all the goodies they get though.

I agree that a second HQ is probably too expesnive in non Apoc Games, and if I'm adding Bikes I might as well stick Khan on Moondrakken (But then no LR Transport).

Khan, GKT (and it's a great point about the Elite ones not giving a second KP), Scouts and PAGK should cover infantry needs, so I suppose what's left is filling out any Anti Tank. A Reedemer should help facing Hordes (It's a shame Vulcan doesn't make those Templates Twin Linked! :blush:).

More thoughts, and I might be able to get some playtesting in on Sunday. :o

You seem to have Khan there specifically to work with your GKT. Given that, I think putting him on Moondraken is a mistake. He wants to be joined to their squad, and protected with them inside a land raider. Between two large scout squads and two large PAGK squads, you should have plenty of Troops, so you can afford to have bikers remain FA.

Yeah, If wanted bikes, and needed more troops, I could always use the spare HQ slot for a cheap commander on a bike.

At the moment I'm tempted by;

HQ: Khan

Elite: GKBC, 4 x GKT

Elite: Ironclad with H Flamer & Drop Pod

Troops: Sniper Scouts x 2

Troops: PAGK x 2

Heavy: LRR

I'll miss not having any Psycannons, might add the usual lone HQ GKCB with Psycannon, depending on points. As for points, I'll start working around 1,500. I'll post up a proper list later.

The Ironclad is a Luxury, but I love Lysanders Hammer and AV13 Walkers can be an utter PITA to deal with!

Edit;

OK, based on the above how's this;

HQ: Khan (160)

Troop: Scout Sarge, 4 x Scouts, 5 x Sniper Rifles, 5 x Camo Cloaks (90)

Troop: Scout Sarge, 4 x Scouts, 5 x Sniper Rifles, 5 x Camo Cloaks (90)

Troop: Justicar, 7 x PAGK (225)

Troop: Justicar, 7 x PAGK (225)

Elite: GKBC, 4 x GKT (245)

Elite: Ironclad, Heavy Flamer, Assault Launchers, Drop Pod (195)

Heavy: LRR, Extra Armour, Multi-Melta (265)

Total: 1,495

Idea is to have Khan + GKT in the LRR, to get into CC. Ironclad will DPA first turn to get into Melta/Next Turn Assault range versus Armour. LRR will go for any armour after deploying GKT + Khan if there's no juicy infantry to melt. Snipers will hold home objectives and target MCs. PAGK will capture/contest enemy objectives, provide midrange fire support, or counter assault for Scouts (I'm slightly worried about assaults from Soulgrinders/High T mobs here though).

Any changes or observations?
