Tevelyn
I have a friend starting a space wolf army and I had a couple of questions for hte veteran space wolf players out there. The first is the easy one. Can ragnar and grimnar take fenrisian wolves? They are "wolf lord"s and I'd assume*we all know what assume means* that they go by the 0-1 choice in HQ so you can't take ragnar and grimnar or ragnar and a wolf lord, etc. I happen to think you can, my friend disagrees, I"d like ot know what the general concensus is. The second question is a bit rules-lawyerish. The wolves are part of the unit with hte wolf lord. Thus, they can be assigned wounds per the mixed unit rules in 5th edition. According to their rules they "count as being part of the unit and may be removed in place of a character or in place of models in the unit they have joined." This was obviously INTENDED to mean that the wolves are simply members of the unit. But the way it's written if another model in the squad takes a wound you can remove the wolf instead of that model. My friend wants to use this IE assign one wound to the wolf, then another to say hte wolf lord, the wolf lord fails his save and instead of removing him he removes the wolf to let it absorb 2 wounds. I hate how the rule is written because it's clearly intended to do one thing and it looks like it allows this loophole. I'd appreciate any wisdom I could get on the subjects. THanks for the attention Tev Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/168082-fenrisian-wolves/ Share on other sites
Grey Mage
They dont have the option listed, but our venerable wolf priest does.... and hes a special character. So Id say no, they cant. And yes, they are the 0-1 Wolf Lord you can take. Well as for the second part.... your friends being mean. Looking back at the 3rd edition rules it basicly made the Wolves a "retinue". However, it is worth noting that under the 3rd edition rules you had to remove the model whose save you failed... unless you had fenrisian wolves who could take a bullet for anyone. I dont play wolves like this personally, but I can see where hes coming from. Id ask him to change to the retinue rule, but understand hes working within the RAW if he doesnt and so is technically correct. Oh! One other thing... note that all fenrisian wolves are the same, so if hes got more than one, and fails a save on a character and a wolf... two wolves die. This happens at each initiative... so if you lose a wolf at I5, and a wolf and an IC wound on I 4, then you lose three wolves.... wich means theyd dry up pretty fast eh? Orks are really really bad about this, having upwards of four different initiatives in one squad.
