Space Wolves - how do you paint yours?

It seems that SW players don't just have an army with the best fluff and dex, we also have the best painted and most original armies. Vanilla marines eat your hearts out!

Congratulations to every one who posted his army. I'm really enjoying this thread, I love looking at pics with painted armies, especially SW. You learn and get so many novel ideas from other modelers. Please keep them coming if you can.

i paint mine with an undercoat of black then drybrush boltgun metal, then drybrush chain mail, then highlight with mithril silver.

for the white i use astronomicon grey as the base then skull white over the top

to do the gold i use bestial brown as a base then apply shining gold over that, then a little bit of chestnut ink over the gold and finally to top it off lightly drybrush shining gold over the inked parts

the weapon casings are just plain black

and thats it, it usually takes me about 4 hours to bash our a full pack of 10 using that method (that includes building them aswell)

btw the reason some of them have coloured shoulder pads is that those grey hunters of mine have been the models of the match many times and its my way of showing it

Here is one thats my old method which was shadow grey then 60/30 shadow grey / vallejo wolf grey then 30/60 Shadow/wolf grey

My new method will use the fenris foundation (really good) and the yellow- darksun? (also really good) With vallejo sombre grey and wolf grey highlights. I havent painted SW in about 2 years and all my shadow and SW grey dried up. where the Vallejo paint was as good as new after a good shake.

I think the new foundation and washes from GW are great though. Some of the normal paints need to have more pigment.

I also plan on repainting my 13th Co to be more like the old codex grey marines, maybe turn it into a pre-heresy army.

Just realised my RP cant take his Storm shield in the new dex :( shame. what to replace it with?

Hey DV8, looks awesome! I gotta ask, how much water do you add to the codex/ fortress grey of the base coats? I can't seem to get it quite right. Also, when you do the fortress with the airbrush, it it more of a focused highlight or a quick one from the direction of the highlight?

It's usually about a 50/50 mix of paint and water. And when I airbrush Fortress Grey, it's only from the direction of the light. Honestly though when airbrushing it, Codex Grey and Fortress Grey are so close together that it doesn't make a HUGE impact (something I realized after having batch-airbrushed the first 1000 points), hence why I had to go back with the washes to create more emphasis.

If you're starting your army from scratch, I would recommend replacing Codex Grey with something closer to Adeptus Battlegrey (or a mix between Codex Grey and Adeptus), and then airbrushing Fortress on top.

I used to paint witha black undercoat and SW Grey over the top but I'm currently repainting for the new codex.

Armor:

Basecoat black

Undercoat with straight Shadow Grey

Topcoat (all but shadow areas) with a 2:1 Mix Shadow Grey/SW Grey

Highlights with Codex Grey and then SW Grey

Aquila/Wolf chestplates done with Dwarven Bronze with Shining Gold drybrushed onto the ridges

Weapons are base black. Metallic areas done with Boltgun Metal and highlighted with Chainmail.

I've just started painting up a new army. I used shadow grey as a base (over black), followed by an all over coat of 1:1 SW grey and shadow grey. (I dubbed it russ grey) This gives them a similar colour to the new GW scheme. Highlight up with 2:1 russ grey to SW grey, 1:1 of the same then edges with SW grey. Looks pretty good.
I don't have a camera or camera phone, but Wal-Mart sells a grey primer in a can for $1.19. It is very similar to the Vallejo Dark Sea Grey in color. It serves as a good base coat IMO. I will admit though, I am not a patient painter, so my method is "prime it, detail it, wash it, done."
(that was stolen and I hope the thief chokes %$#@&^*s!!!)

Damn space wolves look popular for thieves. Mine got stolen, left my my long fangs and bjorn that was in another case tho

Yeah noticed your posts just after I posted it. Was about to edit

I am going to be trying your method sometime today got my box sets sitting at workbench at work, boss is away for a week and its looking like no work to do for next few days :D

DV8, Vrox, Lord Ragnarock...excellent work. Thank you for the inspiration. DV8, great tutorial (looks perfect for my Grey Knights as well!!) very clean.

What is the time per model/pack for you guys? Just a planning question.

DV8, do you plan to do a tutorial for your vehicles?

All in all, the SW are very well represented on these boards and on the gaming table, proud to take part.

Maybe I should think about changing my Orky handle........

Well one of the key points of the tutorial was to demonstrate that:

1. It's all little steps.

2. Keep it simple. Less is more.

I usually average 5 models every 3 or so days. This is on top of a full-time job, so I only usually squeeze in 4 or 5 hours of painting a day.

DV8, do you plan to do a tutorial for your vehicles?

I may. I've written up my Space Wolf lists and I do need to paint up another Rhino...

Heres some of my first few grey hunters. Going with a much darker colour.

base coat is a mix of chaos black/Shadowgrey/hint of codex grey

then i do a mid highlight of watered down shadowgrey

Final highlight of shadowgrey/codex grey mix. This is table standard, my HQs and such will have a few more layers and work.

My space wolf army:

Originally a 13:th company list, but it has gradually added more and more regular space wolf stuff.

Most of the army. A unit if fenrisan wolfes and a couple of wulfens are missing, and some bikers and scouts seems to be just outside the picture.

I suck at blending paints so I go with the color right from the bottle.

Primer: Chaos Black

Base Coat: Codex Grey

High Light: Adeptus Battlegrey

I do the shoulder pads with a coat of orange (forget the exact color) and then sunburst yellow
