Wolves V Orks

Hi.

I have been playing against an Ork Player and doing well, however my list is a bit stagnate, I am using templates to take down the green hoard. Usually two Whirlwinds and a Vindicator with two Dreadnoughts carrying plasma cannons and flamers in the packs.

I don't have Long fangs and my LRE is a work in progress, I was thinking of changing my lists as my opponent makes larges changes for every game (we can tailor our lists) but aside from dropping two Rhinos for DP's mine is much the same.

So for dealing with lots of Orks what would you take or what have you found to be effective besides a gunline and lots of templates?

Land speeders , dance around the flanks with heavy bolter's / assault cannons, missile launchers , they will either have to catch you and divide their forces , or ignore you while you gun down their numbers , even if the speeders are killed , they ARE CHEAP in points XD

If you really want to have some fun at your ork buddy's expense, stick your troopers in a trio of Land Raiders (pick your poison as far as variant). Orks have virtually nothing that does anything more than glance a Raider. It's either Close Combat with Power Klaws (where they need 6's to hit and not much better to glance/pen) or a Shokk Attack Gun (that'll more likely hit at Str 7 or less than actually do anything to you).

Hell, even 1-2 Raiders will make him cry. Plus you can still afford other stuff.

Or 3 strong 15 man BC packs. BC's can deal with boys really well in my experience. I had a 9 man pack with WGL rout a 8 man nobz squad, losing about 4 BC's. Against Boys with 1 wound, its going to hurt. And youll mostly be going first.

And more whirlys ;)

I like lots of Dakka against Orks. they are a CC army after all so i dont try to counter their cc abilities. Landspeeders with heavy bolters/asscans, Predators with HB sonsons, Land Raider Crusader, Dreads with Asscans, Terminators with Asscans, lots of Bolters...

In general anything that has many shots to take down many orks <_< templates work too, of course.

against orks i normally run vendred with Assault canon, 2 GH squads, one full BC squad with a terminator rune priest attached, my Vindicator and, my LRE, i find with orks its best to turn the terrain against them, last game i played i forced the ork player threw a choke point ware he couldn't get more then then 4 models into Combat at once, the rune priest and BC held off the main ork force all game while the tanks and GH shot them to peaces

Thanks for the advice, the next mission is Cleanse with Table Quarters and looks like being a fast game

I don't think I will go with the Land Raiders, I have three of them but they are the OOP RT ones they look good on the table, but if I was going to take one against Orks it would have to be a Crusader.

I am using Land Speeders a squadron of three with HF and MM and a single bird with AC and HB, they are not as effective as I had hoped. A mixed squadron may make an appearance in the next game as they can race to the flank in the first turn.

I was thinking of a WGBL with AC and ML four WGBG toting two AC's all arriving in a DP, it is a lot of points in one place but it can dish out a lot of hurt. Not sure if I want to put a dread in a DP for this game.

Seeing the deployment is Table Quarters I am wondering if it is worth taking Wolf Scouts as I doubt my opponent will leave any vehicles on the rear of the able for my scouts to attack.

Against Orks it really comes down to how fast you can shoot them and how long you can stay out of HtH. There are not many options for taking an Ork army down aside from lots of shooting and a charge to finish them off.

I recommend trying squads of six grey hunters in heavy bolter + storm bolter razorbacks. This unit, for its meagre 160-170 points depending on exact armaments, spits out alot of bolt shells, is very flexible and can survive some serious hurt.

Having said that, who can resist wading into orks with big squads of blood claws? Soften 'em up with GH, attack bikes and the like then pummel the remainder with big squads of claws...

As a final thought, that drop pod unit of wolf guard will be very effective in a 'quartered cleanse mission methinks.

In my experience either try to work down a squad at a time or if theres just too many, work on each squad at once, pop things like Shokk Attack Gunz, Battle Wagons and Looted Russ' and you'll soon trim down the ork horde.

against orks its less about templates and more about number of shots you can lay down at AP 5 or less, flamers are great against them especially heavy flamers since every thing other than mega armoured stuff dies to it especially bikes.

take lots of men in your squads and try to get the charge before he does a 30 strong Boy squad with sluggas and choppas and a nob will generally lay down a nasty 121 attacks with a 50% chance of hitting however you can trim this total down by charging them to a modest 91 attacks

shoot squads that are about to charge you and if you can take out Warbosses and weird boys as these will be the ones reeking the most havoc without a boss they cant call a WAAAGH!! same as a weird boy although you may also want to get rid of his nasty 36" melta gun attack.

Hope this is helpful Good Luck against him!

Its funny to see if you have 15 Bloodclaws with a wolfguard leader with Pelt and claws and a Runepriest/ or any other Ic standing in front of a great unit of Orks that are about to charge them. The orks aren't very likely to win when they do. Countercharge for the win.

If you're playing objectives and not kill points, it doesn't matter how much you kill. with the 3 Raiders, you can literally roll right onto the objectives in turn 5 and there's nothing he can do to you. In the future, I highly recommend you try this at least once, regardless of which raiders you bring.

Can you fire both an AC and CML in the same turn? Can you even carry both?

Blood Claws and Grey Hunters, canny deployment/movement and a bit of luck. Grey Hunters should act as a first wave, using Bolters plus Counter Attack to weather the storm. You should then use the Blood Claws to overrun their lines with a massive Counter Charge. Vindicators can help with Nobz Bikerz and clear huge lumps of Boyz, Whirlies can do similar. As a final option, Typhoon Speeders can do both AT and Frag Infantry, and if you keep it mobile he'll have a job removing it.

Cleanse with Table Quarters deployment?

Youll want a pair of attack bikes, or a pair of heavy bolter speeders if you dont. Flankem, rush back to take out artillery and attack gunz, that sort of thing.

One unit in a transport would also be very very good.

Whirlwind, 3 GH squads, and a BC squad probly.

Long Fangs- 2x Missile Launcher, 2x Heavy Bolter to pop those trucks.

And one HQ being a Vendread with assault cannon and heavy flamer *Called Bjeorn Pattern around here*.

The other can be whatever you like, though a TDA WGBL with AC and FB wouldnt be bad. What the hecks a WGBL with AC and ML? I hope you dont mean your trying to give hime a cyclone missile launcher and an assault cannon- two two handed weapons would be a big no-no.

"Cleanse with Table Quarters deployment?"

Yes we were using missions from the 4th ed rule book with table set-up from 5th ed, only because we were/are using the missions from a tournament run last year.

Anyhow I had a second win! With three more games to be played but now my opponent wants to drop the size from 2000 pts to 1750 pts, he wanted 1500 but I managed to persuade him to accept 1750 pts as that's the local tournament standard.

BTW I took three DP's to the game two troop and one dread and they sort of worked for me, my three MM/HF Land Speeders did not get a shot in because of the deployment but my three Whirlwinds pinned units left, right and centre. So I was happy with the outcome. However, now my opponent wants to use Eldar against me, the last few times I have played Eldar it has been at tournaments under 4th ed and the opponents took the Ghost Warrior army, AKA the walking wall of death.

So anyone been playing against Eldar lists under 5th ed? What are the Eldar players using, I guess I can expect Bladestorm and a Seer casting Favor and Doom (?). Has 5th ed pulled the fangs on the harder Eldar lists? I have not played against them too much as they were first choice of kids and power-gaming tools who went to the top of the pyramid at tournaments (thankfully) and slugged it out with like minded tools.

Come on experts, whats the good oil? (advice)

I don't take Blood Claws, Long Fangs, Bikes or Land Raiders, but I do have standard Land Raiders that I can use.

Lots of Predators, a couple of Razorbacks with various turrets, Rhinos, DP's and a fist full of dreads. Along with Grey Hunters, Scouts, WGBG in TA and some WGBL's and the usual metal HQ choices.

Only three more games to win!

Something that worked for me this past weekend was throwing down a Wolf Priest, a Rune Priest, and a retinue of 4 CC Termies on top of an objective / the Ork and Necron player's backfield. It was an 'all my eggs in one basket' sort of deal, but we were doing a team engagement and I was attempting to distract the orks for a turn or two while my Blood Angels ally closed in.

(Oh hi! First time poster, long time lurker!)

Anyway, long story short: A nearly 700pt squad of close combat took out 60 or so orks before they died. Yeah, point for point, I didn't make my money back, but it was pure ecstasy to see a completely decked out 6 man HQ/Retinue choice take 100s of shots and 100s of attacks while the rest of our armies marched across the field.

Now, eventually we lost. We made a few small tactical errors partially due to early bad dice rolls (Failing 7/8 of the first saves thrown at both of my GH squads hurt) which caused a few panicked moments for myself and the fact that the Deceiver from the Necron player controlled the center of the table. <-- Long Sentence.

Now that I read more of your post: At 1750 I whole heartedly feel that bringing decked out Termies to the fight is a bad idea, BUT, being shooty with the ability to back it up with some awesome counter assaults seems to be what usually works for me against orks... Um, with your Predators, you could take the (I'm bad with terms) version that allows you to shoot a crapload. The more shots you're putting into a squad, the less you'll have to deal with later... I'd suggest templates, but you seem to have that covered too. (edited portion)

what do you do when your ORK opponent runs 3 battlewagons ( the av14 guys ) along with DEATH ROLLERS, and a 10 man squad of nobs ( the 2 wound guys in the ork version of T.Armour )

or in 1000pnts he runs two wagons + rollers + 1 squad of nobs and 1 20man unit of boys...

What do you guys do when its not a swarm style army?

Well I dont see alot of battlewagons in mounted armies.... and I still take a whirlwind. If nothing else its cheap and good at pounding lootas and objectives.

As for Battlewagons and Deffrollas... well you did bring meltaguns and/or lascannons right? Just shoot them. Meltabombs on a wolfgaurd also work out pretty well and will help you out with the LD test to not get run over.

Wulfen are a great way to counteract Nobz. Runic Charm/Storm Shield..... and he instakills with every attack with his Mastercrafted Thunderhammer.

In 1k?

Vendread- Assaultcannon, EA, Hvy Flamer-170

WGBL- TDA, RC, FB, Assault Cannon, Pelt- 128pts.

10 GHs- 8 bolters, P.Pistol, P. Rifle, 2xP. Fist- 230pts.

15 Bloodclaws- 3x Powerfist- 246pts.

2x Attack Bike- 80pts.

Predator Annhiliator- Heavy Bolters, Stormbolter- 145pts.

999pts. Yet to lose a vendread to mounted orks, and this gives decent covering fire and the speed to chase down lootas if he brings them for a change. Assaultcannons have a decent chance of hurting AV 14, and the TLLC of course does that rather well. If you pop a transport youve got enough in the way of heavy bolters+bolters to thin down his numbers before he gets there, and youve got atleast two turns before he charges in most scenarios.

But hey, I only play them once a week ^_^.

In one of our first 2000 point games he took a lot of vehicles with a looted Basalisk. Scouts took care of the big gun when they came on, as for the vehicles, it was a case of racing up the Rhinos and shooting melta guns at them, forcing the troops out then (fingers crossed) firing the Whirlwind or Vindicator at them. I was using three Land Speeders with MG and HF and managed to get them behind a vehicle shooting and flaming. I used the dreads targeting a unit at a time with two Plasma cannon shots. It was templates all the way, as I knew that was my only chance to take down the numbers.

My opponent was a rusty as I am and I managed a win in the first game and a draw in the second (had to leave early), then we decided to do the five game series, with three games to go. BTW the three Whirlwinds I used in Saturdays game worked much better than I expected, only one shot scattered off the table and I use the incendiary rounds worked well as he put a lot of his units in cover expecting the save.

Eldar will be a totally different game, they have a different style to the Ork hoard more razor like with their shooting.

Anyhow in the next game I am facing Eldar not Orks, so what should I expect?

oh and i forgot...with a custom force field....

I forgot about that force field, a pain the the buttocks that was. I lost a full squad of GH's and a WGBL getting rid of that model. That was a quick lesson on how not assault Orks until the unit is whittled down to a point where I have a chance of winning the HtH. WGBL charges in, rolls six dice, rolls mostly ones.

I think that was the game we called a draw.
