old rhino relooking

Hi Everybody, this is my monthly report :HQ:

My new project is a Rhino as the topic title should let you think.

A few years ago, I bought 2 MKI rhinos on eBay.

As I needed to paint them with my army scheme, I put one in an alcohol bath to clear the old paint.

The alcohol removed the paint but removed the glue also so I got an unpainted and unmounted rhino.

And I saw that I find it ugly and decided to work a bit on it.

The changes I made :

  • I removed all sides sculpts and exhausts that I found too basic;
  • I glued some MKII looking like plates on sides;
  • I created new side and back doors with plasticard and small bits of sprue for the teeth;
  • I added also side vents for engines made by gluing sprue bits together;
  • I changed deadly simple tracks with more realistic looking ones and changed a little their path;
  • A magnet system has been built to change top door and hatches to allow more options;

...

.

"Pictures, not Words" yelled the crowd !!!

Ok, so, here are the pics :

First one has taken in rhino configuration with unmodified brother beside to compare :

Under the beasts :

Another under view to see new tracks :

Now, the magnet system for options :

It has been made with self adhesive magnetic tape bought in a dollar store ("solderie" en Français). It not as strong as ferodyn ones but it's widely strong enough to allow lifting the rhino weight.

First pic shows you the Rhino without its hatches covers and a with WIP razorback option consisting in a double heavy bolter.

On the left part of the pic, you can see the hatches covers and rhino top plate backsides and the magnetic tape glued on them :

The top with no plate and the bottom side of the bolters turret :

Exhausts :

At this point, my Rhino was desperately short of exhausts so I needed to build new ones.

As I had 2 rhinos to build, I had to make at least 4 exhausts in a 2 exhausts per rhino option.

So, I decided to build one and made a mold to reproduce it.

The "master" has been built with 7 layers of plasticard glued together (2 x 1,5mm and 5 x 1mm for a total thickness of 8mm) and lolly pops tubes.

After a first failed try with a milliput mold to make milliput casts, I decided to make a silicon mold to make resin casts.

Here they are :

In white : the master. In blue : the silicon mold and in transparent, the 2 casts I made with basic boat reparing polyester resin.

Temporary result :

Here's todays pics with first layers of base coat and glued exhausts casts :

And... that's all for today.

As usual, feel free to comment, criticize and ask.

Targol.

Hey, I've been dead for so long in this community that I forgot to post the result of my work.

Here it is :

It's only intended to be table top.

Now, I'm currently working on a scratch built twin linked assault cannon turret to take place on its roof.

Here's how it looks like for the moment :

Top armor plating is not stuck for the moment.

Canons have been made using Q-tips tubes. If you want to discover how, I made a tutorial (in French but pictures can talk too) :

part 1

part 2

If many are interested in this tuto and don't understand French, I may translate it...

Thanks for your comments.

I am however wondering if you'd be willing to cast a few more of those exhausts and sell them, I've just picked up a couple old rhinos as well and they look pretty sharp on there. :D

I could cast some more exhaust but I have no idea of the price I can sell them. The casting is really basic and there's some cleaning to do before using them (see picture on the first message). Another point is that I use clear polyester resin rather than polyurethane one and it's a bit more tricky to use.

By the way, I don't know the postage price from France to USA. It won't be heavy as I think that each exhaust is less approximatively 1g but I need to check that.

If you're still interested, send me a PM and we'll discus about that.

Very nice results, I recently turned down a couple of old rhinos thinking I wouldn't be able to get very good results, but I would've been more tempted if I'd seen this first. Those assault cannons look great, I looked at your tutorial and got the main points mais mon français n'est pas bon. If you could do an english version it would be helpful, but the pics are enough to get a good idea of how to do it.

Nobody asked before you did it so I didn't translate it. As Someone is interested, I'll try to translate it and create a subject in the "Tutorials and Frequently Asked PCA Questions" forum.

I'll post a link here when it'll be done. But you may be patient, I don't have much time to work on the hobby these days.

Hey Targol - these are really great!

I posted a thread with similar intentions to this about 6 months back - mainly concerning an update to the old (2nd Ed) Predators. My progress stalled however, but I'll dig out what I have.

I would also love a few casts of those exhausts if at all possible? I'm in London so should be easy to ship. Would be MUCH appreciated! :tu:

I just had a look at international postage from France and what I discovered scared me.

For a 5g package, the fees are frightening :

  • 22,10€ for USA ($32.84 at today's change).
  • 15.90€ for Great Britain (14.54£ at today's change)

If you're still interested or find a cheaper postage, send me a personal message.

Hi Targol - thanks for the quick reply and the assisstance!

I'm really suprised at those postage prices tho! Just checked myself with UPS and La Poste, and I'm getting the same thing! I sent a reasonable sized pack of metal (so, heavy!) epic eldar models to the US via Royal Mail and it cost something like £5! I'll keep looking into postage options as I would love a set of these! Where abouts in France are you, if you dont mind me asking?

I think it could be cheaper if sent as a single letter but with no warranty that it arrives well...

Just check under my Avatar, It's written :(

Owch, that is really spendy there for postage!

I only asked because there was some breakage of my exhausts in transit, but I think I'll order a couple of dreadnought powerplants and cut them down for a similar effect.

Great looking rhinos though. ;)

Hey, I made a deeper search in "La poste" site and found other fees.

If I send by mail rather than by parcel, the prices are more reasonable:

  • 2,50€ until 200g for UK (1,82£).
  • 2,80€ until 200g for USA ($2,97).

Well that sounds more like it! Thank you for taking the time to do that! I'll have a quick recount of the number of rhino's/pred's that I need doing and get back to you asap.

Apologies for not getting more of my stuff updated t share in this 'updating' of the early rhino designs, but work and real life have been crazy busy these last few days.

Thanks again though for helping me out with this!
