Black Templar Crusade color scheme

Yesterday I was looking at my BT's, looking at the stupid amount of minis I have to paint I thought it was about time to get my lazy ass of thechair and get some painting done.

I picked one of the poor blokes and used him as the test subject for my crusade color scheme. Here's the outcome of the Beta painting. xD

I'm pleased with the highlights and the work on the chest piece, the head is ok, but that white trim on the shoulder pads is really P :cuss me off. might paint it red instead with red BT cross on the pad (elites and HQ's would have a gold or silver trim hierarchically)

Although the weapon is not yet painted I already have a schem for them as well (white+metallic and possibly some red here and there depending on details)

So far this is it. What you guys think? (Bash away! ;) )

thanks for the reply the scheme came from joining some fluff.

first emperor champion, later first high marshal had black armor and the red hand from fighting side by side with the crimson fists.

Still, unsure about the color on the shoulder trim red or white. guess i'll paint another test mini *looks for another victim*

(after looking at some CF which have no soulder trim, I'm wondering if that would work on a black templar, pad all black.) *çooks for a third victim*

this said, a doubt crossed my mind, does anyone usually paint them joints between the plates (behind the kneed foe example)

I've seen some painted with boltgun metal and such, but I don't really like that look, but leaving it as it is just ignores that bit of detail as well, would highlighting be the answer? (right now it does seem like it) How do you get around this?

If you drybrush the whole model boltgun metal first, then paint the black areas with a nice layer of chaos black, I find the silver to be subtle enough it doesn't detract from the model itself.

Or you could use codex grey.

Another method ive heard works well and very fast if you dont have the time, but gives you all your highlighting and detail quickly, is to paint a very dark grey (games workshop dont do a stock one so youd either have to mix it or buy it from somewhere else but it could be worth the hassle) and then put a heavy badab clack wash over the entire model. Once its dry you can do all the details and trim and the highlighting will be done for you. You could also just do it on the soft armour if you feel its not smooth enough for the entire model.

May I also suggest you use Ice Blue for the eyes it will really help them pop, ive seen some really cool templars with ice blue eyes.

I've tried both the white and red trim on test minis and I have to say that they both look good. My white is different though. It is more of a very light grey with white as a highlight...in pictures you can't tell however. Got a feeling I'll mainly do the white with some red as Sword Brethren and gold for HQ. I also do the same with the red hand although not all of my Templars fought in the Declates Crusade. I'm looking forward to seeing your guys completed and would like to know how you will be doing the Templar cross as I can't achieve it on a large surface. May your sword be as sharp as your faith.

Cheers, Messanger

Edit - I do the 'soft armour' metallic. If it is the brightness of it that you dislike you can always give it a wash of black or alternatively paint it grey. I have seen some people paint it red (though not Templar army). However I would encourage you to avoid leaving it plain black as it will leave the miniature lacking.

@M2C - never gave that a thought, although the method you described seems to be a bit time consuming.

@jester_prince - The eyes are painted with enchanted blue, ice blue and skull white trying to give it some kind of shading but my hand slipped a couple of times so there's too much enchanted blue.

@Messanger of Death - Still haven't thought about the cross, I guess I'll practice on paper and then try free-hand.

as for the "soft armor" i guess I'll paint it either:

1) boltgun metal + black wash

2) fortress grey highlights on the detail

After a weekend spent at home I'm back to my dorm where my paints are, its 5am and I just finished painting a second test mini (the one with red trim).

Enough chit-chat, I don't want to bore you to death, here's the pics.

Sorry about the lack of light, like I've said its 5am so not much light to take pics, here's a couple with flash (hope they're not too shiny)

Just need some opinions now, which one you like the most?

Feel free to add critics and tips, they are always welcome :P

Good idea on removign the old arm nubs and replacing with new plastics. I have a couple of these old snapfits that mght benefit from this treatment.

As for the color scheme...I like the red trim a little better. Plus, it'll probably be easier to paint en masse for you.

Small update, because of college I haven't had much free time to paint, anyways, here are a couple of shots of a marine with flamer (testing weapons color)

Long time without updates due to exams and a "broken" laptop.

This is what I've been up to in the little spare time I've had:

Get your hands on the Citadel wash range, the Badab black in particular and seriously.. go to town with it on your Champion, don't be bashful.

Once you do that, and it dries.. witness the amazing that it does to metallic's.. Trust me! :(

Never used citadel washes before, but I've seen plenty of people pledging for them.

I guess its time I give it a try. :( Thanks for the suggestion.
