To kill a god...

My mate who has necrons loves his Nightbringer, especially when it chews through my lines. After my Dark Angels failed to bring it down I decided to let Captain Stern and his Grey Knights at it.

He was slaughtered.

Anyway, I have since changed the good Captain for a Grand Master. So far I have not succeeded in causing more than 3 wounds. How can I bring that beast down? And while I'm at it kill that Necron Lord that trails it in a masive squad?

Couldn't you just kill it outright with the GM or Stern's Force Weapon if you got into CC? Give your GM a Storm Shield and he'll get 6 attacks on the charge, which you should be getting if you rush into the Nightbringer out of a Land Raider.

That said, it is quite slow and so try to shoot it way before it gets to you. Lascannons and even Psycannons (He doesn't get any save against them) could prove to be pretty useful.

How many points are you playing at, anyways?

Normal anti Necron doctrine at 2000 and below points are to kill his:

Warriors, Immortals, Wraiths, Lords, destroyers, and something else that counts as a "Necron" for phase out.

At 2500+ pts, with a model count higher then 55-60, kill his biggest slaughterers, because he came with the numbers he needs if its 55+ (need to get him down to 25% of "necron" models, and thats hard to do by turn 4).

Normally C'tans and Monoliths are just to keep is stuff alive so he doesnt phase out. Ignore them and phase him out, because thats all those two things are, just tricks to stop you from beating on his cronies.

The GM or Stern will insta-kill with their NFWs due to our outdated rules, but you still have to hit on 4s and wound on 6s, and he'll get his save. Psycannons are a bit better actually, because you hit on 3s wound on 6s, and he gets no saves, so massed psycannon fire should bring him down eventually.

The much much MUCH better plan though is to simply avoid it. The thing is 360pts of close combat awesomeness... so why on earth would you voluntarily charge into close combat with it? :D

Keep in mind, that's 360pts of not-Necron he's taken, which means about 15 fewer models you have to kill to phase him out. When you think about it that way, he has actually done you a huge favor by taking the Nightbringer.

So just avoid the Nightbringer (not hard, since GKs are a highly mobile force), and concentrate on killing his warriors and other Necrons. Engaging THOSE units in CC is always a good idea, as you should wipe a squad each turn by winning combat and running them down. Depending on his force, simply staying at 19-24" and storm boltering him is a winning strategy too.

Really, other than Monolith spam or Destroyer spam, Necrons are even more behind the power curve than we are, so other than those two builds you should be able to simply play to his weaknesses and defeat him without too much trouble.

I wouldn't bother going after the C'Tan, they're designed to attract fire.

Considering he's wasting 250pts+ on a non-Necron model, just go for 'Phase Out'. He'll have less Necrons to kill (with the majority being Warriors), so just focus on them. The Eversor or Callidus are both great choices; the former will carve a bloody path through any Necron unit, while the latter is great for ninja'ing that ever annoying Lord+Res Orb+Veil+Immortal squad combo (she comes on, flames them then assaults and kills the Necron Lord). GKT's will eat his Warriors in pretty short order, and they're practically immune to most of his shooting. Your Dreadnoughts should take plasma cannons to deal with Destroyers and again waste Warriors, don't bother with anti-tank (Monolith is pretty near-immune to your shooting).

Doesn't matter what his C'Tan does, so long as you force 'Phase Out' you auto-win, regardless of mission type.

Obviously phase out is what to go for if you are looking to win, if you are looking to kill the NB for the sake of it (which imo you should do at least once cause the game after your mate will disregard winning and gun for whatever killed his god) then probably psycannon him, couple of squads sitting on home base plugging away should work, of course you might get lucky with a GM and insta kill.

Say 5 A, 2.5 hit, .4W, .2 US, ok maybe not, just shoot at him with psycannons!!!!

The unfortunate part is that Grey Knights really lack the tools to hurt the C'tan. Most other races have some specifc combination of units that will bring it down in a turn (e.g. Sternguard+Librarian in a drop pod, 9+Autocannons with "Bring it Down", lots of Eldar Rangers etc...). In essence, massed high strength firepower or firepower that ignores toughness will take it down after a couple of turns because its invul save is just a 4+, so statistically you need to do 8 wounds to it. The best use of your GM is to drive it into a Warrior squad or other necron squad and wipe them out with power weapons. The Nightbringer will chase your Raider, but as long as you move 12" all the time its still only hitting on 6s. If you really, really, really want to kill it, the best way for Daemonhunters is the following. 2 TLLC/ML Dreads, a Vindicare Assassin, and a mini 2 psycannon firebase of either terminators (my preference) or 5 man Grey Knight squad. With that you should be able to generate 2+ unsaved wounds a turn.

The deciever is actually better than the nightbringer, the nightbringer has less useful abilities and cant leave combats, but I digress...

One wound with a daemonhunter thunderhammer will make the nightbringer not swing until init 0 next turn... another wound next turn and he simply loses a turn of attacks. Plus you wound on a 4+ instead of a 6+, and its not like the 'crons have anything they can counterassault with to save the nightbringer if he gets stuck in a bad place.

So a squad of 7-8 or so GKT to equal the 360 point nightbringer, with 4ish THSS, will have enough bodies to keep 3-4 THSS termies alive. Even 3 THSS termies have a pretty good chance of getting at least 1 wound through (55%), and from there its all about stunlocking it... if the GKT are charging then its even worse.

But, as others have said, you can always go for phase out.

Alternatively induct some IG with sniper rifles, wounding on a 4+ is always useful,

on a similar note a vindicare might be useful,

shield breaker ignores inv. saves

so thats a wound on a 2+ followed by 4+ (0.41W)

Turbo penetrator is 2 wounds

so 2+, then 4+, then his saves of 4+ (0.41w)

the hellfire wound on a 2+

so 2+, followed by a 2+, then 4+ save (0.34W)

overall with all those shots and no targetting restrictions he'll probably do ok, and he's only like 100pts, only sniper rifle we get

Sweet. I never thought of phasing him out.

Really? :P Oh, man, GKs are >>>> Necrons! The C'Tan eat DH up for lunch, but they're pokey and pricey. Just ram your GK dakka and GK NFWs into the Necron ranks and you'll be phasing them out in no time. Every C'Tan and Monolith your Necron foe takes should make you dance with glee. They're just making it that much easier to wipe them off the table. If you are appropriately aggressive, they won't even be able to use the Monolith's shooting abilities, they'll be so busy whisking 'crons through the portal just trying to stave off phase out. (Remember that the 'lith can't both shoot and TP units in the same turn.)

Well, specifically, it can't use the particle whip and portal in the same turn. It can still use the portal and gauss flux arcs, but anything with a 3+ save needn't fear the flux arcs.

In a 1500pt game, where he's spending 560pts on his two HQ (It's a very rare player who doesn't max out wargear for the Lord), that means you're facing, at most, 52 Necrons, and that's if he spends every remaining point on Warriors and/or Flayed Ones. In all likelihood, it'll be fewer than that, probably in the 40-45 range, even if he's only buying Necrons (if he's taken the nightbringer as well as scarabs, spyders, monoliths, or pariahs... well, your job is just a cake-walk). So that means you really only have to kill about 30-32 Necrons to phase him out. Consider that Warriors will be in squads of at least 10 (I'm guess that "squad of doom" you mentioned earlier was more like 20 warriors), a few good rounds of close combat and they'll be gone! Running down squads with I2 is so much fun!

I didn't catch it the first time, but it does sound like he's got a full 20 man Warrior...that should make you jump for joy. Warrior squads are extremely vulnerable to close combat, and putting 20 in one squad allows you to kill the equivalent of 2 squads in one go. It's an excellent feeling.

And to answer the question of the post: Psycannons...lots of psycannons....more and more psycannons...

Oh, and blessed ammo on the raiders HBs (twin linked) and or Psycannon Bolts for the Servitors.

Okay, in a 1500pt army he has 34 Necrons, no Monoliths to bring them back, and almost no anti-tank to speak of. This should be the easiest game you ever play.

First off is the Destroyer squad. These guys are fairly nasty, but the 3 of them will die in one turn of fire easily, and because there is only the one squad they will have no chance whatsoever to get back up. That's the easy part.

After that, you just need to whittle away his Warriors. He has 34 Necrons total, which means if he ever has 8 or fewer after attempting WBB saves, he phases out and you win. Since you know you'll kill the 3 Destroyers, that means you need to kill 23 Warriors. The easiest way to do this is to get in close combat with them and wipe them out in resolution. However, if the Nightbring is close by it's not worth trying that, and you should just pick them apart from range instead. At 19+ inches away, you will easily win a gunfight with these guys. Just pick off Warriors in the squad that doesn't benefit from the Res Orb with all your S8+ weapons, and use your small arms either to focus-fire (wiping the squad is ideal to deny WBB attempts) or whittle down the Res Orb squad, since the orb won't help against massed small arms fire.

If his two warrior squads are separated, it might be worth dealing with the tomb spyder, just so you can finish on squad of warriors off and deny them those WBB attempts.

The scarabs will try to tie you up. Either stay in your Raiders and avoid them (if you have raiders) or simply ignore them and then let them charge you. With your S6 attacks you will insta-kill bases, so you should burn through whole squads easily. Don't try shooting them or going out of your way to assault them though, because the Warriors are simply more important.

Seriously, if you have an Eversor, don't waste him trying to bring down a C'Tan. Send that nasty into a squad of warriors, and even unsupported he should beat them up. With a little luck, he'll overrun the unit he charged on the first try.

indeed there is always a good chance
