Space Wolves Army Project

Howdy Y'all,

After about a year of collecting the Wolves I have finally gotten some painting done. This is hopefully what is going to keep me honest about devoting time to painting whenever possible. I don't currently have a great amount of time to paint but that will change soon as my schedule with school and work is about to change drastically after graduation. Anyway, enough with the rambling and on to the good stuff!

This is the beginnings of my 2000 point force that has served me very well over the past year winning most engagements they have been involved in. The army is centered around a core of two Grey Hunters squads riding in style in Rhinos and two Blood Claw squads that arrive via Drop Pods. Supporting this formation is one Battle Leader, one Wolf Priest, and two regular Wolf Guard. Backing these boys up are one OBEL Scout squad, one Venerable Dreadnought in a Drop Pod, one Predator Destructor, and one Land Raider.

Leading off for the day is the Battle leader. This guy hits the table with a Frost Sword, Plasma Pistol, Belt of Russ, Wolf Pelt, and Wolf Tooth Necklace. He leads one of the Blood Claw squads and comes in handy for that first turn when they can’t charge after the drop. With his current load out and a passed leadership check, this dude gets 7 attacks when he gets charged! Also, he increases the chance that the Blood Claws will get off a successful Counter Attack.

Next up is the Wolf Priest. He comes similarly equipped as the Battle Leader but obviously has the Iron Wolf Amulet instead of the Belt of Russ. His purpose is much the same as he leads the other Drop Pod Blood Claw squad. This is about to be replaced by the actual Gamesday special edition Wolf Priest model and he will then get a new coat of paint and join the ranks of the Rune Priests as he should be.

Following this duo is the Venerable Dreadnought of the army…who takes Wolves without one!? With the Assault Cannon and the Heavy Flamer he can lay down the hurt on the turn he arrives. This was my attempt at making a model for Bjorn the Fell Handed. I think I did fairly well on the model but I am particularly proud of the banner as it is as close to the personal heraldry of our beloved Bjorn as I could get.

Next up are the Scouts. These boys aren’t quite what they used to be in 4th edition but are still a very useful unit to have…useful and cheap. Armed with two Power Weapons, a Meltagun, and Melta Bombs, these guys can handle just about anything they need to. They are still good for contesting something if there is not a huge chance of return fire.

I hope y’all enjoy my little showcase and please, any comments or criticisms let me know. The only was for me to improve is to know what is wrong! Thanks ahead of time for you consideration.

Happy Hunting,

O’Mal

Alright, now here is the meat and potatoes of the army, the Grey Hunters. This 9 man squad has two Power Weapons, a Plasma Pistol, a Meltagun, and 5 guys with Bolters. A somewhat odd setup I know as they are a hybrid of shooty and assault but this works for my style of play and my typical opponents. They are accompanied by a Wolf Guard with Storm Shield and Power Fist. After 5th edition rolled around all my Power Fists got dropped from the regular guys and added to the squad leaders due to their greater number of base attacks. These guys ride around in a Rhino that has been converted from the new Vindicator kit to represent Extra Armor, a fairly darn easy conversion.

This last set is of a WIP Land Raider that I have been cobbling together from several different kits. I have already made several improvements to it since this set of photos were taken. This is an attempt as making a Pre Heresy style Land Raider. I liked the idea of it being even larger and more imposing so I added the top section later to balance out its great girth. Y’all let me know if there are any improvements you would make.

More to come whenever I can get some time between final exams, state licensing test, and moving into mine and my wife's new house I plan on working on the sad Blood Claws and two Drop Pods that have been on my painting desk for about a week. After that its the rest of the army...help me!

Happy Hunting,

O’Mal

I concur with my wolf brothers. Nice work. I'm wondering though, if you'll catch a lot of flak on that Land Raider. It looks great, but some people may squawk about the firing arc on the sponsons. As long as you don't play with real jerks, it shouldn't come up.

Keep up the good work.

Whilst I think your infantry and Rhino are absolutely excellent models, I can't say I like the addition of the top to it... it just robs of it of the Land Raider image and makes it look a little like a Malacador or some such IG tank. The rest of it's excellent, a dead ringer for the FW one. But I don't like the top, I'm sorry. Still, maybe with a lick of paint it'll look better!

Howdy Y'all,

Thanks for the possitive feedback on these guys. I am pretty pleased with the way the Land Raider turned out, I was inspired by the pictures of Dave Taylors Adeptus Custodes Land Raider way back in the day and wanted to see if I could pull something like it off. His was a Heresy Era Forgeworld kit that he put some sort of large sepulcher on top and I thought it just looked amazing so this was my attempt at that. I know its not for some and I can respect that because it did take me a while to get it where I thought it looked good and spent enough time working on it I got to the point where I liked it.

I figure that at this point I will post the list that goes along with the boys from Fenris to let y'all have a go at it and see what you think.

Ok, the Battle Leader and Wolf Priest accompany the Blood Claws who insert via Drop Pods on first turn. These squads are big enough and have enough combat capability to deal with just about anything that charges them. The Dreadnought and Scouts will follow as quickly as possible while the Land Raider and Predator provide support where needed. The two Grey Hunter squads will go to grab objectives or move to where the juiciest targets are in Annihilation missions. I purposely left the Land Raider empty so that I could have the option to carry around any squad that needed it.

Any suggestions or criticisms are greatly appreciated.

Happy Hunting,

O'Mal
