ChainsawDR
Hi all, I've applied transfers to my SW's and they are shiny and look out of place. I presume that spraying them with matt varnish will stop this, but I wanted to double check if this is the best way or to do something else (I'll still be matt varnishing them anyway). Thanks all. Valhalla
Matt Varnish and/or Dullcote, available from all good model and hobby shops (but not GW...) Once you've finished painting and putting on the decals cover the model with varnish to both take away the shine and also to protect your paint work. I'd recommend a gloss coat first followed by a matte one. The Gloss will offer more protection and the matte will take way the shine. jester262
Use some decal set before spraying them. Your models will thank you. I agree. Use microsol on your decals. It actually melts the decal a bit and makes it look like it's been painted on Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169150-shiny-shoulder-transfers/#findComment-1997128 Share on other sites

KiltedMarine
I think it goes by the same name, but I'm not sure... The procedure I have followed, per my time in the trenches as a red shirt lo those many years ago, is the following: Paint model Apply 'ard coat to area on which decal will sit. Let dry. Apply Micro-Sol to area. Apply decal. Brush Micro-Sol over decal. Let dry. Repeat as needed for decal to fully lie down/dissolve. Apply 'ard coat over dried decal. Let dry. Spray with Matte Varnish. The rationale for the multiple layers of 'ard coat is to make the area around the decal match the shininess of the transfer itself, so the Matte Varnish application is covering a uniform surface. Otherwise you may still see the outline of the transparent portion of the decal after the Matte is applied. A little bit time-consuming, but actually quite easy to do. lunchb0x
i go with put decal on, then press it firmly in place with a paper towel...and then hit it with a matte varnish. Works everytime for me, and I use GW  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169150-shiny-shoulder-transfers/#findComment-1998101 Share on other sites
G. A. K.
personaly I use the glossy 'ard coat from GW which I paint on with a brush. I like the shiny look on the armor, like they just polished it before going to war! My great company believes its a 'costume to die in' similar to the samurai. For that same reason I paint my models with a lot of gold and silver metal details. Grimfoe
Don't be scared to try your hand at painting on the transfers. Being that we're Space Wolves and not smurfs, I think the painted army badges, pack markings and great company markings look better. I don't think I would do it if we were another chapter, but the tribal look you get with a little variance in our markings seems to fit our models.
