Sideways-moving Vehicles

Recommended Posts

I noticed during a 1000 pt. game vs. IG, that my Defiler has a wider front than its side. It had to get between two pieces of difficult terrain to flank a squad, so I attempted to move it sideways and allow it to crab-walk between the terrain and not provoke a difficult terrain roll. We didn't make a very big deal about it, as I had the game pretty much wrapped up by then, but in hindsight I was curious about the legality of the move. Is this in fact supported by the rules, or did I pull a fast one?

The way I see it, if the outer edge of your defiler was at a certain point, and there was no point of your Defiler further than the full move distance from that point, then you can place it however you want.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to illustrate what I'm trying to say is: see your defiler as a rhino. After moving your full move, you can turn the rhino however many times as you want as long as it doesn't surpass the distance you set out for it.

Hmm, still not sure that's any clearer...

It doesn't say that anywhere.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: choose any "point" on your model (edge, center, leg, etc.) and move it X inches, making sure that point doesn't go further than X inches. Your model can then pivot on it's center as much as it wants (turning your defiler sideways for example) before, during and at the end of your move. So if it ends up sideways between terrain, they you placed it well!

Was that any better? BRB p. 57 might help (I suck at explaining...)

Quotes would help. I just can't remember if anything says you can't move and rotate a model so it moved further than it should've.

Vehicles are allowed to pivot on the spot any numer of times as they move. It doesnt say anywhere that walkers must face where they move. Though regular vehicles must move forwards and backwards between pivots up to their maximum move. Walkers however are treated like infantry models, where the defiler (and many larger walkers like titans and knights) have trouble. To avoid that, most people just pivot the model to move accordingly.

Page 72 states no need to face the way you walk with a walker. It makes sense since a man can side step and backstep. So its obvious a crab can sidestep easier then a dreadnought (though a dread can do so too).

What you did was legal, and well within the rules. It just seems odd because people dont do it often with Defilers. Though if you want to get technical, turning defilers removes distance walking, the same way you gain distance by pivoting a vehicle that isnt perfectly square (rectangular) 90 degrees before moving its first inch. So there is your counter argument if someone gives you a hard time.

rotating a vehicle is free. I've played many competitive types that do this trick even with rhinos.... even starting the game with the rhino's turned sideways, then rotating them forward to gain half a vehicle length, then moving them. This is an old trick. Is it illegal? I don't think so? Is it within the spirit of the game? You decide.

Specifically I see no reason a walker, which is even 'crab like' in appearance couldn't walk sideways. It may take a seasoned pilot, but I'm sure chaos has a few of those ancient defilers that can not only walk sideways, but probably pull off a pretty mean 'moonwalk'.
