Brother Andremus
For the last year, I've had the joy of my 12 year old son discovering the hobby that I enjoy so much, 40k. For the longest time we concentrated on just the game and stories, throwing together our figures, slapping some paint on them and playing. But recently he has begun to notice more and more the quality of work in the Codexes, White Dwarf, and on various boards like B&C here. So eventually, he said - "I want my figures to look that good, dad." So, of course, I want to help him achieve this. So we bought "how to paint space marines", and have read up on lots of boards and articles on painting techniques - and now we're both giving it a go. For me this is quite a challenge - for even though I've been doing gaming of some sort for over 25 years, I suffer from some physical issues that make quality painting a bit more interesting. I'm blind in one eye, and so it throws my depth perception off when painting details. I also don't have the steadiest hands. For the longest time my style of painting was: base coat, ink wash, drybrush over, and some simple detail. But in the interest of bettering my own skills, and putting my son on the path to better painting, we're both gonna try to do a bit more... He's chosen a Khorne CSM warband - he likes Beserkers. For me, I'm building a rather large Black Templar Force. We do a fair amount of Apocalypse stuff, so we each have around 5,000 points. My list stands at: Castellan Kulhbert (Iron Halo, Plasma Pistol, Holy Orb, Thunderhammer, TermHon, Frag) Joined with: --Reclusiarch Konrad (Plasma Pistol, Frag, Melta, TermHon) --Standard Bearer Ehren (BP, CCW, Frag) --Apothecary Sigurd (BP, CCW, Frag) --Sword Brethren Jaegar [sergeant] (TermHon, PF, Bolter, Frag) --5x Initiates (1x Melta, 1xFlamer, 3x BP/CCW) --Land Raider Crusader (SLight, Smk) Emperor's Champion Ritter (AAC) Techmarine Cutberto (Servo-harness, Bike, TermHon) Terminator Squad Valdus (5x Terminators: AssaultCan, Cyclone, 1xChain Fist) Venerable Dreadnaught Ademaro (MM, SLight, Smk, Ven, ExArm, TankH) Crusader Squads Bernal, Erhard & Chadrick --Initiate w/ Power Weapon & Frag --Initiate w/ Bolter & Frag --Initiate w/ Special Weapon & Frag (2 have Flamers, 1 has melta) --2xInitiates w/ BP/CCW & Frag --2xNeophytes w/ BP/CCW --2xNeophytes w/ Shotguns --Drop Pod Crusade Squad Mandel --Initiate w/ Power Weapon & Frag --Initiate w/ Bolter & Frag --Initiate w/ Melta Gun & Frag --2xInitiates w/ BP/CCW & Frag --2xNeophytes w/ BP/CCW --2xNeophytes w/ Shotguns --Rhino (ExArm, SLight, Smk, Dozer) Crusade Squad Helmer --3xInitiate with Bolter & Frag --1xInitiate with Plasma gun --1xInitiate with Missile Launcher --Razorback (TL-Las, ExArm, SLight, Smk, Dozer) Crusade Squad Gerard --1xInitiate with Power Weapon & Frag --3xInitiate with Bolter & Frag --1xInitiate with Flamer & Frag --5xInitiate with BP/CCW & Frag --4xNeophyte with shotguns --5xNeophyte with BP/CCW Assault Squad Hagan --5xAssault Initiates (1xPF, 4xCCW, 5xStorm Shield, 5xMelta, Frag) --Reclusiarch Fordon (Jump, Plasma Pistol, Frag, Melta, TermHon) Assault Bikes Jarvis --2xAssault Bikes with Heavy Bolters Land Speeder Drache (MM/HF) Vindicator (ExArm, SLight, Smk, Dozer) Predator Annihilator (ExArm, SLight, Smk, Dozer, Hvy Bolter sponsons) Land Raider (ExArm, SLight, Smk) Land Raider Ares (ExArm) Land Raider Terminus (ExArm) Doomhammer (HF sponsons & HB sponsons) And here they are - assembled and primed, but not yet painted (my apologies on my poor camera skills): http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump_files/DSCN1100.jpg If you're at all interested in the backstory I'm developing for these fellas, I'm building that up in this article. The first task is going to be painting 1000 points for a doubles tournament (yes, we'll be doing Templars and Khorne, lol - this tournament specifically allows any pairings, and we just like teaming up as father and son. The unit is the Castellan, Emp Champ, 2-9 man squads in drop pods, dreadnaught in drop pod, and the assaults. So here's what I've started: http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump2_files/DSCN1142.jpg The force. http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump2_files/DSCN1148.jpg Castellan Kuhlbert http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump2_files/DSCN1149.jpg Venerable Brother Ademaro http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump2_files/DSCN1150.jpg Squad Bernal http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump2_files/DSCN1151.jpg Assault Squad Hagan http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump2_files/DSCN1154.jpg Champion Ritter So far, I've primed with Chaos Black primer, then using the GW spray gun sprayed another layer of watered down chaos black. Then I've gone over with Boltgun Metal on the metal surfaces, and begun placing Fortress Grey on the areas that are going to be white. My first problem that I've noticed is, that unpainted I tend to miss the mould lines with my poor vision - they're much more noticable when painted. And I'm concerned about the highlighting, once I get to it. But I'm not to that point yet - I'm going to finish the stage I'm on now before going back over with chaos black to cover up some mistakes. Then, we'll try the highlighting. I'll post more as I progress on - hopefully my camera skill (and painting) will get better as I go along :) All C&C welcomed and encouraged... Mr. Bleak
Wow, you have alot of Templars! And, you have a good start on them :P I wouldn't be to worried about highlighting. If you mess it up, it is easy to cover the mistake with Chaos Black. I can't wait to see more! MalevolentMc
Impressive force! Looks like it's going to be a pretty awesome one indeed. I especially like that converted Landraider/Demolisher? Painting isn't always super important, but there really is nothing like seeing your work go to .. work. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169414-wip-fighting-company-kuhlbert/#findComment-1999910 Share on other sites
Brother Andremus
Impressive force! Looks like it's going to be a pretty awesome one indeed. I especially like that converted Landraider/Demolisher? Thanks. Yes, it's a Land Raider Ares, from the GW Apocalypse Datasheets... http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump_files/DSCN1131.jpg http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump_files/DSCN1133.jpg It's constructed, and primed..but it's part of my Apocalypse force, so it's gonna wait a little while for the rest of the paint job. It's basically the front, top, and dozer from a Vindicator combined with a Land Raider Redeemer. Officially, the Ares is supposed to have TL Heavy Flamers in the sponsons, and not the Redeemer cannons - but I think the Redeemer cannons with their two barrels make a nice stand-in for TL Heavy Flamers, and they look better than something I could kit-bash. I'll play them like TL-HF, though, as that's what the datasheet says. Grey Mage
You know, you say your depth perceptions off and all, and Ive no reason to doubt you, but Id thought Id mention that you have some beautifully constructed and posed models and I wish you the best in their painting. Id offer suggestions, but Im complete rubbish at painting myself. Kikunosuke
I wish you & your son all the best in the painting challenge y'all have set for yourselves. While I can't offer you any painting suggestions due to my own ineptness at painting, your moldline problem can be solved by working under a suitably bright table lamp when you're cutting & cleaning the bits from the sprues. Brother Andremus
Update - starting to add some color and detail. Made a couple of messes, which I'll have to touch up. Also noticed some places where I didn't add silver or grey to - gonna need to go back. This is still the first layer - will be adding more layers and some highlighting as I go on... http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump3_files/DSCN1157.jpg Crusader Squad. I've decided that my squads are "led" by a sword brethren. This is purely for fluff - I'm just painting them this way. Since the stat line of a sword brethren and an initiate are identical, and I haven't bought any special skills or wargear (because I can't), this is legal. Its just a visual thing. http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump3_files/DSCN1160.jpg Venerable Dreadnaught. I really love this model - totally worth the expensive Forgeworld price IMHO. So far the painting is going okay. http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump3_files/DSCN1161.jpg Champion Ritter. After taking the picture, I noticed that some of the soft armor never got the silver treatment - plus there's a skull on his backpack that didn't get the first graveyard earth coat. As you see, its the regular EC model - I added the grenades and the lantern. C&C welcome! Brother Andremus
Some more work on the Crusader squad - almost to the point where I'll add the next layer of colors (like to the robes, skulls. parchments, seals, etc) - which is another technique that I don't have a lot of experience with. However, other than the occasional mistake that I'm going to go back and fix, I'm liking things so far... http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump4_files/DSCN1163.jpg http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump4_files/DSCN1167.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169414-wip-fighting-company-kuhlbert/#findComment-2004341 Share on other sites
Freakiq
Nice looking army you have there. Are you going to add any washes to the white parts? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169414-wip-fighting-company-kuhlbert/#findComment-2004368 Share on other sites
Brother Andremus
Nice looking army you have there. Thank you. Are you going to add any washes to the white parts? Well, I'm not sure. I'm following, for the most part, the "official" GW Black Templar painting scheme when it comes to the blacks and white. Other than the red trim on the weapons (which I just like - better than the plain metal) and some of the detail work (like green grenades, mainly so that the figures are WYSIWYG and there's a little more color), I'm following the directions, which seem to be: Lay down a slightly darker base color. Layer over a lighter main color. Highlight with a highlight color. The only place I had specifically planned to use a wash was on some of the silver - badab black on the joints of the power armor, for example. Having said that - the goal here is to do a good job - at least much better than I've done in the past. So if anyone has suggestions, including washing, I'm certainly up to it. Right now the shoulders, chests, and banner are fortress grey - the white hasn't gone down yet. I think in the photos it looks white because of the flash and my more photography skills. Brother Andremus
A little closer to being done with the first squad. Put Skull White on top of the Fortress Grey, and Red Gore on top of the Scab red. Also added some details like belt buckles, scope lenses, etc. Basically, I have to finish the sword brethren's robes, finish skulls/parchments, then apply highlights. the dark grey to the black, snakebite leather to the holsters/belts and then some lense flare(s) to the scopes/eyes. And finish the banner. Oh, and I am going to wash down some of the metal parts - soft armor, face grills, etc. I guess I also need to finish the neophyte faces... I hate faces. Hopefully will be done in a day or two. While not GD quality, its some of my best work. I'm reasonably proud. Any comments welcome, as I'll be starting the second crusader squad in a couple of days...anything need to be different? http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump4_files/DSCN1175.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169414-wip-fighting-company-kuhlbert/#findComment-2007339 Share on other sites
Brother Andremus
Well, basically done with the first crusader squad. But first, a side project: http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump4_files/DSCN1184.jpg Basically, its a display tray for the first 1000pts. Nothing fancy - I basically copied the general thing that a ton of people have already done  But, I like it. Its my first one. Now the squad: http://web.me.com/andy_akins/AndysSite/Dump4_files/DSCN1198.jpg Basically, its done. My shaky hand really shows here, with the highlights. I may try to touch them up - but the fact is I just don't have a steady hand. While it looks quite a bit sloppy in in the photo, its not so bad when looking at the figures in normal light. And, to be blunt, they're probably the best figures I've ever done (which should be depressing, considering all the expert work done here on B&C) - so I'm pleased. Other than the obvious (have a steadier hand) - any thoughts or comments on what I can improve/change/do differently for the second squad? Messanger of Death
Andremus these Templars surely make the High Marshal pleased with their clean and simply armour. I'm actually envious because you started your guys after me and managed to finish them before me. The one thing that sticks out the most is the eyes on your marines. Even with your unsteady hand and poor eye sight they are clean. any thoughts or comments on what I can improve/change/do differently for the second squad? Maybe try a very watered down bestial brown or lighter brown on the robes to give more depth if you want to give it a go. Also if you feel that the white inside the shoulder pads is getting on the sides of the trim, then maybe give a micro pen a go. Even with your unsteady hand and poor eye sight they are clean. Thank you for your kinds words. And don't worry - you still might beat me :) For my 1000pts I still have another crusader squad, an assault squad, a dread, 3 drop pods, my my 2 HQs. :) Maybe try a very watered down bestial brown or lighter brown on the robes to give more depth if you want to give it a go. Also if you feel that the white inside the shoulder pads is getting on the sides of the trim, then maybe give a micro pen a go. Yeah, the tabbard could have a bit more depth. I followed GW's Dark Angel robes instructions - its Graveyard Earth; then a 1:1:1 layer of GE, Bleached Bone, and water; then a 1:1 Bleached Bone and water on the raised parts; finally a 2:1:1 Skull White, BB, and water on the very high parts. I actually toyed with the idea of one of the GW washes (I own the whole kit) - Devlan Mud or the Sepia, for example... thoughts? And thank you again for your comments and suggestions. Messanger of Death
I actually toyed with the idea of one of the GW washes (I own the whole kit) - Devlan Mud or the Sepia, for example... thoughts? I have never used the washes. I usually uses inks or I make washes out of citadel paints. I like to use a heavily diluted bestial brown for my robes. Although mine aren't as white as yours. There is also Snakebite Leather actually. And don't worry - you still might beat me I'm not picking up another paint brush till after my exams are finished which isn't till the 23rd. But then I'm hoping to enter the painting challenge over in the Templar sub forum. Will give me the push to get some squads finished. You should join in as well.
