Revisiting my GKs

Ok, after the flurry of rumours a couple of months ago (and hopefully better painting skills), I have been decided to finally take up my Grey Knights after a year hiatus. I am also excited because I have finally decided on an DH parent, WH inducted list that will represent my army's fluff. My Sisters were once part of the Order of Our Martyred Lady and a local convent was recruited to help in the cleansing of a cultist uprising. The fighting was fierce and the Sisters cleansed many heretics that day but it was not enough. The cultists were able to open a massive warp rift which spilt out daemons and nearly routed the combined might of the Sister of Battle and Imperial Guard in the campaign. However, thanks the divination of the Tarot, a small chapter of Grey Knights arrived, stopping the Chaos advance and leading a counter charge. The Sisters and Guard, inspired by such holy warriors and shamed by their cowardice in the face of the enemy, rejoined the fight and protected their saviors so they could eventually push the daemons back to the rift without the loss of a single Knight. The Inquisitor of the force, a powerful and secretive man, was conflicted on what to do. The planet had been obviously tainted but its inhabitants and defenders seemed desperate for redemption. So he took mercy on them, rather than having the whole of the people cleansed, he detonated a atomic pile at the site so as to cover the incident and had the IG and Sisters swear a secret oath to continue their duties but in truth, serve him. Hence, the remaining Sisters created a convent on the planet and serve to support their "brothers".

Right know it is mostly from my SoB point of view because that is what I have been playing the last year or so but hopefully I can continue to build on it. However ,the point of this post, is help for painting my GK. I have already set on a scheme for my sisters but I want it to coordinate it with my GKs. So I was hoping you guys have some ideas for that and also ways to distinguish it from others (don't want to fall into the "necron paint trap"). Here's a sample pic of what I have started for my GK:

And here are some of the sisters I need them to match to:

What do you think?

Pics too dark.

Actually the Grey Knight is really dark right now. He was base coated gun metal and then i did a layer of bolt gun and then did a badab black wash over it real heavy, so yeah. Sorry, they don't get much brighter than this. Point is, I was thinking about going for a more gritty look, darker than what they have in the dex to represent the wear and tear fighting the forces of evil has on oneself but I still want it to be....what the word...dazzling. <_< Or, lets say, memorable.

Jake, I took the liberty to clean your pictures up. I used the "White Correction" and "Levels" adjustments in GraphicConverter. These functions should be available in most photo editing programs. There's only so much one can do, but I hope this helps. :P

Dang, thanks a lot! That looks a lot better and clearer. Any suggestions though?

I did my GK with badab bleck, too. But you should use mithril silver instead of bolt gun. When using washes or army painter a very bright color is needed - even thou it looks terrible befor the wash comes.

Mithril silver? Now that might be going a bit too bright. I doubt I am going to use much if any, just the tips and edges of some things. Do you have an example maybe?

Since you've selected the traditional GW color scheme for GKs for your WH, you won't go wrong using it on the GKs. I would pay particular attention to the base and the halbred. Since you are using dark metal tones for the GK body, try to use brighter earth tones on the base with plenty of flock. Otherwise the model will not stand out from the base. A little bright color on the visor slits will help give it a human look (less-necron any way).

They look like crap :)

The sisters look really good and I like the heavy flamer conversion, its a little big, but it works.

Now the Grey knight. right now he looks like a necron, but that can be easily changed. adding small bits of color will really help the model, and a nice base would also help, we talked about lava, I think that would work well. Since you are using red on your sisters you could use a small amount of red on your grey knights to tie in the army. If you dont want to use red I would suggest using gold like on you sisters to give your knights some variety.

good luck and its good to see you working on your stuff again.

Sorry for the slow update. I've been busy with my AFAST and girls and lots of other random happenings. Anyway, so I've pretty much built up the GK to be showing mostly Boltgun but has ample highlights of Chainmail and Mythril. The gold-ish stuff is Brazen Brass with Shining Gold. The base is Scorched brown, 1:1 Scorched and Scab Red, 1:2 same and then final highlight of Scab. So I am in kinda of a quandary. I am not sure if I am satisfied with where it is at, there are still some very dark recesses that contrast well but I feel like I need to do a wash still. I was originally was going to do a blue one but I am not sure anymore because of the lava rock base (I also think I am going to do some magma cracks in future bases). Ideas?

Oh and sorry for the dark pic again. I tried using photobucket's tools and it just didn't work like Marid did it and the software he uses is mac only (makes sense cause it has the best visual media tools). So yeah, help?http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/jakehunter52/IMG_0646.jpg
