Silent Swords - WIP

Silber

Recommended Posts

Now, to get myself motivated I decided to finally take some pictures and put up my very own WIP-Thread. Here it is. Hope you enjoy it.

As a sidenote, I'm very aware that my style is a bit sloppy. It's meant to be. I like it that way, and I enjoy painting that way. I'm not of for a Golden Demon, so no problem there. I was inspired to paint like that by John Blanche's art. I love those images so much - they look as if someone had awakened from a nightmare at 4am, thrown some paint onto a piece of paper and then gone back to sleep, and still it looks genius.

Whatever you think about that way of painting, let me know. I just wanted to get straight that I'm not trying to paint 'Eavy Metal - style.

Cheers :confused:

First mini I painted for this army. The green of the eyes is off, I don't like that. Otherwise I'm content.

Converted MM-Attack Bike. In german theyre called Trike, what is stupid but inspired me to actually convert one as a Trike. The freehand on the rear fenders says "SILENTIVM AD AETERNVM" - Eternal Silence, my chapter's motto.

Converted Land Speeder Storm with Huey-style Cerberus launcher. Piloted by a full Battle Brother on intent, because the Scouts transported will be special.

Decurio (vet sarge). The Power-Mace is going to count as a Fist. I couldn't imagine a Marine riding a bike with a Power-Fist. This one is still WIP (technically the others are, too, but that's mostly basing). Especially the source lighting is still to be done. Probably I'll give the mace a nice glow, too.

Hope you enjoy, and let me know what you think....

I love you style

it looks really nice, kinda worn and the way thinngs should be even if people dont want full battle damage your style lends a feel of being used and worn withiout total looking off the production line 5 mins ago or totaly torn appart by shells.

Id love to know how you did it.

Holy hardhats, this is awsome! ^_^

Really lovin' the painterly style you've used, a nice variation to the vast hordes of 'Eavy Metal style models out there.

Btw, I'm stealing the trike idea if I ever get some attack bikes.

Sir, you do yourself a great disservice by claiming your style is sloppy. I don't see anything sloppy here, the freehand proves that you have excellent painting skills and you have painted these mini's in your own style.

You have a great painterly style that I really like. Some of my fantasy mini's were painted similarly, but I am actively trying to paint more 'eavy metal' for my ultramarines. (even though I don't use UM Blue at all)

These are great, keep up the good work, and keep posting those pics, I'll be watching. :)

Thanks alot. Mission "Get the Lazy Bastard (that would be me) Motivated" accomplished ^_^

@jester_prince

Tutorial, aye. I'll do one with pics.

@Freakiq

Feel free to. Tutorial? :D

@StubbyGB

Well, perhaps sloppy is not the nice way to say it.... btw, the sword on the Decurio is a decal, just in case. Oh, and thanks. <_<

You know, for a long time I thought you were just another wingy fem-marine head.

Then out of the blue you produce this.

These models are awesome. The paint scheme and iconography is genius, the atmosphere they have is inspiring and they have a very Blanche feel to them, abstract and grimdark. I simply love your painting style. These models are art, pure art. You must paint more.

@TDA

Thanks :)

That's an Empire Flagellant, cut in half, stuck onto a piece of tubing about 5mm in diameter, then adjusted in heigth and cut to fit the place where he was meant to sit. Glued on, then rebuilt the robe with grey stuff. Some paperclip and guitar string for neck and cables, the head's a servo skull from the devastator kit, the "shoulders" are plastic tubing again.

@tortoise

Expressive is nice :D

But isn't sloppy a part of expressive? Purposeful sloppiness = "expressive"?

EDIT:

@Terrible_Trygon

Ah well, thanks. Oddly enough I was half expecting to be torn to pieces for my lazy painting while others painstakingly shade the hell out of their models to "get it right". Now having them called art is.... strange. :)

Btw, your alternate Sister was one of the models that inspired me to test my skills beyond what I thought I could do.

There's going to be at least one other Land Speeder, then a couple of Dreads. I don't dare planning further ahead, but I'd love to do a Land Raider or two.... we'll see....

wow really nice models, could do with some basing but hey they look great already

how did you get the paint so textured in look?

and the landspeeder engines are just amazing what colours did you use for that

they look like blood ravens who have just cruised through the eye of terror and have gone all badass and stuff :lol:

@wiplash

Thanks :)

The textured look.... not quite sure what you're talking about. Is it the "painterly" highlights? These are done with base color + lighter color (most often either a light grey or an off-white) + matte medium + glaze medium + water, in maybe 3 to 5 stages, slowly adding more light color to the mix. When you're talking about the overall "expressiveness", that is just calculated sloppiness (which takes some practice after 6 years of hunting the 'Eavy Metal standard ;)). Using a comparatively big brush helps. The one I'm using 80% of the time is an Army Painter Wargamer Small Drybrush. It's tip is cut at an angle, so that you can do more precise painting with it, too. The other brush I'm using is a high quality natural fur one (so it'll keep it's tip some time), size 2/0 ("the handy work"). This is the one I'm using for eyes, scribblings on purity seals, "hot spots" and the likes, and it is used about 19% of the time. It doesn't get any smaller than that for me - no need to. The remaining 1% is application of washes, which is done with a thing that can hardly be called a brush any more. I think it was a cheapish medium sized drybrush once....

@all

Any ideas for basing? I want something simple and straightforward. No special resinbases or so. Maybe just an old-school muddy earth with some grass style.... like I did with this one:

I couldn't imagine a Marine riding a bike with a Power-Fist.

First I saw this, and I nodded in smile...

AND then I saw this

I was like ;) , then :).

Albeit self-contradicting, your work is amazing, and I recommand road basing.

@Terrible_Trygon

Oh, he's just not in as good a shape as he used to when still alive.

Btw, come to think of it, am I now a wingy fem-marine head with a knack for painting? ;)

@airbender

Yeah, but that model is exactly the one that made me abandon Power Fists on Bikes. While looking great I cant help but wonder what he's doing with that hand when no enemies are around to point at....

So your power fist marine is dead? That makes...sense?

Anyways, on the subject of fem-marines, will we see any in this force? I am interested to see how you do them. I have never seen female marines done right. They ether have silly looking chest armour, giant mega tits or just have female heads so look more like girly boys. No one has taken into account female body-structure properly as of yet. If your this good at painting, you should produce something good I assume.

The Decurio is finished, save for basing and wheels, which have to wait for basing so they can be nice and dirty:

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/772/lar16.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8828/lar17.jpg

While I had the camera out and studio all set up I took a rear shot of the trike, which I forgot last time:

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/3763/lar14.jpg

And this, Terrible Trygon, is for you:

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6995/lar18.jpg

I'm not sure wether you (or even myself) are going to like this girl-scout, but I have to try it anyway. There's not going to be much modification. Miniscule alteration of proportion by:

-shaving down shoulders a tiny tiny tiny bit

-shaving down the boots for smaller feet

-shaving down waist in width a little bit

-shaving down waist in height (so, at the bottom side of the torso) and adding plasticard soles for comparatively longer legs and shorter body)

and then these, which will either stay bald with a nice stubble painted on or get a short cut similar to the standard scouts. Then of course I had to shave down the codpiece. Have you ever taken a close look at these? Is that supposed to be psychological warfare?! :P

The scout looks promising. Though adding hair to some of the heads would do well when it comes to making them look obviously female. Also try lowering the neck a bit. I did this on my Prototype Battle Sister model. Also to some work on the legs. Try to make the trousers look baggy to give the illusion of smaller, not so manly, legs.

Anyways, looking at the direction your going, I am glad to say, I won't be throwing heavy stuff at you after all. You might just be able to pull this off alright.

What exactly do you mean, "lowering the neck"? Like, the shoulders? Or just so that the head sits lower between the shoulders?

Since I posted the image some 90 minutes ago I'm working on the little bastard, and it drives me nuts. The shotgun is going to obscure the waist and crotch anyway, the shoulders are crap from the get go (I friggin hate the scout kit! Who sculpted that?) and I don't even want to start talking about that :D kit's proportions....

Woo, that was good. Time to get back to work....

:D
