Silent Swords - WIP

Silber

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay, eye is almost back to normal, and I even had some time to take pictures today!

The Dreadnought is in the painting stage, 80% done. What's missing is mostly decorations, decals, scribblings, smoke and oil stains, as well as final highlights and effects.... in one word: details.

You might notice that I added some decorations compared to the last pictures. Among others I added:

  • Purity Seals, Green Stuff, 6 of
  • Rivets, chopped plastic rod, tons of
  • Front plate decorations, Green Stuff and customized Dark Angels Bitz
  • Kikkala Candles, Green Stuff, chopped headphone cable and brass rod, lots of

Enjoy.

I love your style of painting Silber, I often find my work comes out too crisp. Any tips on how to make my marines look battleworn like yours?

In other news, that dread is absolutley fantastic, I was hoping to convert a dread myself, but after looking at yours, I see anything I now make pales in comparison.

Really nice work!

@Runebeard

Well, I think what's most defining about my style is ad primum calculated sloppieness, ad secundum "painterly" highlights and tertium a kind of layering.

To practice sloppieness I recommend taking a random and somewhat expendable miniature that you can "screw up", so you can let go of expectations. Then take a brush two sizes larger than you normally would, preferably one without a proper tip, and paint the sucker. Use washes and you'll see that your paintglobs somewhat "blend in". Well, that's what I did, and it worked for me. I used Zombies. Great for practicing.

Concerning the layering - I use washes and mix everything that comes after the basecoat with matte acrylic medium, to build up the highlights and colors in general. Devlan Mud rules. What else can I say?

The Dread is pretty much done. Basing and sealing are in order, but thats for later when I have figured out what kind of basing I want and have solved the issues with my varnish. For now I'm done.

I present to you Senex Antiquus Venerabilis Frater Hieron:

Btw I'm not particularly content with those pictures. They are too bright and washed out. I promise better ones later....

Comments and critique welcome and asked for!

I'm out of patience for today. So because the second batch of pictures isn't as good as I hoped, either I'll just post it and leave the other ones up. This way you can catch most of the details - some in the too bright pictures and some in the too dark ones :whistling:

eh!

A fantastic model. Very nice, though the ammo belt is a bit of a let down. Your better off with a heavy bolter belt, because this one looks a bit...naff.

Also, is this a Brother Dreadnought or a Sister Dreadnought? :D

@Brother Tuditanus

You have seen it frequently as in you've seen something similar from others? Because I thought it was me who first thought of that conversion.... do you have a link?

It's the FW Assault Drill with the Ravenwing Assault Cannon, cut in half. The ammobelt is plasticard. And although I agree it's a little bland I happen to like it quite a bit. Mister Trygon.

Senex Antiquus Venerabilis Frater Hieron. Frater as in Brother. I don't think there's going to be a sister Dread anytime soon....

The dread conversion is really convincing. I was just looking at that cool assaultgun conversion and I didn't notice that this used to be a AoBR dread. :cry:

The bike conversions are cool as well. I was struggling a bit with how I would model my special weapon bikers, and maybe I'll give your idea a try.

I know Latin now as default? ;)

Anyways, even if it was a she, you wouldn't really notice. The difference of gender for a dreadnought would likely be the artificial voice and the name.

Well, you had to ask.... ;)

(Did you watch the latest Transformers movie? I keep picturing a Dread with.... well.... balls like that uber Decepticon.... A Siege-Dread, with "wrecking balls".... I'll better go sleep now, before I get myself into trouble....)

I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but the power wep arm on the dread look flimsy (the arm, not the weapon) and the assault cannon is at an awkward angle. But the paint job is crazy awesome!!!

thats just how the FW arms are made

loving the conversion :rolleyes:

ive seen similar conversions for arms but i think this is the first left handed ass cannon job i hav ever seen

the ammo blet looks iffy but i think its obvious what it is

my only dig on the paintjob is the white light sourcing on the ass cannon arm, it doesn't look like its coming from the light

@Terrible_Trygon

The day I do a Dreadnought with a set of wrecking balls hanging from its loins I'll do a Sister Dreadnought to accompany it, sporting gigantic GS-Breasts with guns in them. ;)

@commander alexander

Thanks!

@verpine

I know what you mean with the arm. But I like that it's leaner than the Mark V plastic Dreadnought's. Looks more dextrous that way and fits the Ass Cannon arm I did better. The angle comes from the way the joints move. I thought it looked a bit strange in the beginning, too, but like so much about this model it has kinda grown on me.

Nice to hear that you like my paintjob.

What do you mean? It's obvious it's an ammo belt or it's obvious that it's plasticard and green stuff? Do you like it or not?

I know what you mean. I don't particularly like it either. Any Idea how to improve it?

That's the camera angle. You can see in the front and rear views that the belt hangs a little twisted. That's because the cannon is turned sideways while the ammobox is fixed. I made the pieces out of a plasticard strip the height of the resulting pieces and measuring very carefully cutting them to the desired width. So if they are different it's in width and no more than half a millimetre....

ah k i see now

ive been thinking about the light, im thinking that if you changed the light to more of a yellow (only pale not vibrant) and then have a touch of yellow nearest to the light (again pale) blending that out to white and then out to the gunmetal colours

this could work without the yellow though i was just taking inspiration from a standard lightbulb and thats how it appears in my mind

keep us posted ;)

Wow that Dread looks plain sweet! Great pose, great conversion. My only gripe is that I always feel the Servoskull bit is too small to represent a head.

Otherwise perfect.

Thanks.

In fact I chose the Servo Skull because it is so small. I don't really like those Dreads that have "heads". The FW ones are nice, but the concept in itself doesn't really appeal to me. I was more going for the "walking crypt" style. The Servo Skull was meant to serve as kind of a centerpiece of the model, but needed to blend in enough in order to not take away too much from this. I think it also has more of a personality this way than it would with the standard coffin style torso without loosing the "graveish" feel. That's my obligation with the FW-ones. When I think Dreadnought I think of an asskicking grave, and they just don't really get that across, IMHO....

I'm desperately wanting to get them ready for the tabletop, so the quality on what follows isn't on par with the dread. I think it's okay, though. Table top standard. I painted the Dread for a week or so, so I'd better not continue on that level if I'm planning to play them at all....

I found myself returning to smaller brushes again. Because I'm getting used to the style I laid out with the past couple of models this doesn't really change anything, except giving my a little more control. Which is good now, but would have screwed me in the beginning. Learning to paint "expressive" is hard.

Also I think I'm slowly starting to figure out this source lighting thing.... maybe I'll revisit the Dread's Asscannon and get that right, but for now Troops are the order of the day. Fancy stuff is for later....
