OnlyInDeath
Welcome to the Fang, whelp! First and foremost, make sure you have read the codex and codex. That will answer many questions <_< After that, take a look at the FAQ on the GW site (link provided in the sticky topics) and also the FAQ 5th ed here in the forums (again, see the stickies). For tactica regarding the various wolf units, use the search function. Just about everything has been brought up at one time or another, and then debated ad-nauseum. For collection ideas, take a look at the army list subforum, as there's many, many lists in there again with tactica discussion and dissemination. If you aren't inspired there, the link in me sig (the inspiration one) is a handy-dandy little topic started a while ago that should help a lot of new pups out to have competitive lists. TeamLando
Welcome Brother. A fine time to start with the wolves, seeing new stuff is probably due this fall. Grey Mage
Not at the moment... alot of us old geezers are dubious but hopeful when it comes to the new book. Take a quick searchy through the forum and youll see we get this rumor every year. On the other hand it usually starts up around august, and lasts for two months or so until the real army is revealed... so who knows we could be next. *Hands you a haunch-o-boar* Sit down, have a gander. Any questions? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169949-starting-wolves-new-to-forum/#findComment-2006921 Share on other sites
Warhorse47
Okay, plan one of 2 ways. First plan is to go with what we currently have , Leman Russ tanks, etc and get them knowing we might lose them come November. Option 2 is to build conservatively using Blood Claws, gray hunters, land Speeders, etc. That way come November, you shouldn't have to worry about the new codex. OnlyInDeath
*pops in from the Warp, inclines his head to Apples, sits down, and grabs an ale, watching OID carefully.* ::Comes flying through the air, body slamming Decoy into the table:: Yeah, right now it's all rumor and speculation as far as what new models/rules/etc will come out for the wolves. Right now you are prolly safe getting yourself GH's, BC's, an IC or two and some armor support. ::takes ale from stunned Decoy, grabbing a haunch of meat off the table:: We are wolves, but still space marines in the end. It's pretty safe starting your force with "space marine-ey" stuff. ::uses Decoy as a footrest while waiting for Decoy to regain some sort of motor control:: Anywho, where's a dress-wearer to pick on? Valerian
Well i have reccently come into a bunch of money and after looking online for a while and reading/joining this forum, i have decided to start space wolves! Welcome, and you've made a good choice by selecting the Wolves. Here is what I recommend that you do with your newfound loot: put it into some sort of interest-bearing account; let your money make you a little more money until at least October or November. At that point the new codex will have been released as well as at least some of the new model range. Immediately upon it's release (maybe even a little earlier) all ofthe analysts here at the Fang will have figured out what works and doesn't work in the new codex; read those threads, and some of the early Battle Reports, then use that knowledge to more wisely invest in your new Space Wolves army. Be a little patient, Best regards, Valerian Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169949-starting-wolves-new-to-forum/#findComment-2006979 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
Ahh, if nothing else they can get themselves some grey hunters and a dreadnaught... lil 750pt force. Go forth! Collect, Enjoy. Paint, game... and when the new codex comes forth.... well, deal with it when it happens. the Leman Russ Exterminator might be gone... or it might stay. But well keep Grey Hunters, and therell be bloodclaws and rhinos and predators and whirlwinds and dreadnaughts and wolf lords and wolf priests and so on.... So the core of our army will remain, even if theres a few adds or drops. Were not Warriors of Chaos after all. Ryzouken
I've heard Land Raiders are good, and likely not to disappear in the coming dex. You should totally get, like, 3. Two of the Standard and a Crusader is good. Then grab 3 or 4 boxes of Grey Hunters and Blood Claws. Probably more Blood Claws than Grey Hunters (thinking 2 or 3 to 1 Claws to Hunters). That'll get you the troops and HQ's you need. With this strategy, you can field a strangely competitive 1500 point army. Also, barring an occasional model here and there, the whole thing should stay legal for next codex. Also, make sure you print out the FAQ on the 40k site. Some grognards try and give us wolves guff because we're so awesome. Long as you've got your printouts, though, you should be right as rain. Put boot to arse for your Emperor! He demands it! Grey Mage
And even if Ryzouken and myself are wrong... well landraiders have a high resale value . Hfran Morkai
Welcome, many wise old wolves have posted before me. Their advice is generally sound. I also think Land Raiders are a good idea to invest in. Blood Claws and Grey Hunters are also fairly safe to stick with. Lord Ragnarok
Safe bet as the new book is probably coming soon are probably... 1. Grey Hunters 2. Blood Claws 3. Wolf Guard in Termie 4. Wolf Lord 5. Wolf Priest 6. Rune Priest 7. Dreads(not sure about iron clad but you can always just call him a regular dread if they take him away from us) 8. Long Fangs --I'd be careful of taking the following... 1. Leman Russ 2. Heavy Drop Pod force (like mine 7 units in DP's). At least just proxy the pods. 3. Fenrisian Wolves Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169949-starting-wolves-new-to-forum/#findComment-2008182 Share on other sites
Ryzouken
I'd be careful about termies as well, as I can easily see some homogenization occurring there, resulting in your getting hosed on using specific models (without ripping them apart anyway). Really, just HQ's, Troops, and anything normal Marines get (Vehicles mainly. Land Raider, Dreadnought, Speeder, etc.) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/169949-starting-wolves-new-to-forum/#findComment-2008313 Share on other sites
WG Vrox
I'd be careful about termies as well, as I can easily see some homogenization occurring there, resulting in your getting hosed on using specific models (without ripping them apart anyway). Really, just HQ's, Troops, and anything normal Marines get (Vehicles mainly. Land Raider, Dreadnought, Speeder, etc.) Yep, I agree stay away from Terminators and Wolf Guard in general, I can easily see a new Rune Priest model coming out soon as well as an unique Space Wolf Dreadnought model. Those are my personal for sure no buys until the new dex. WG Vrox.
