some ultramarines

Recommended Posts

Well i've been quiet for a while... still beavering away on my space wolves but i've not been totally idle... so here's the latest thing to be working its way through my painting desk- Papa Smurf himself

Not sure what to do with him once he's painted cos no one i know plays ultras but hey... its a lovely model so i just had to paint it, however as may have said beofre its surprisingly hard to do well. far too much bling on him for my liking... i tried to get some parts (like the soulder pad) to look like the classic calgar paint scheme rather than the jimmy saville-esque look that GW seems to love at the moment but hey...

btw the blues are darker and much more gently highlighted than they appear in some of the pics... i think the ones of the gauntlets are the closest representation to their real appearance. Anyhoo, eough waffling from me please feel free to peruse and critique as much as you like.

nice skin recipe! would you mind doing a small tut or worded outline of what you used?

are the skulls finished? they are well executed but they do seem a little to contrasting with the armour

overall a very snazzy model you have there sir!

the skin was just done following the tutorial in white dwarf a while ago...

basically tallarn flesh base, dark flesh wash followed by a thin scorched brown wash in the recesses.

mid tone of 2:1:1 tallarn flesh, fortress grey, bleached bone

highlight 1:1 tallarn flesh, bleached bone

bleached bone highlight

add a bit of regal blue under the eyes (they reccomend a wash but i mix a bit in with the first highlight colour instead)

add a bit of scab red/bleached bone wash on the bottom lip but again i prefer to highlight it up rather than wash it

then finally they say a final highlight of white (i prefer to add a bit of white to bleached bone as is not too stark then but its up to you).

i did find though, that it looked too pale on this model so i added a thinned gryphonne sepia wash before adding the final highlight again...

as for the white skulls i purposely avoided the gold that GW painted them because i thought it was too much but i might go back to them as they do stand out a bit too much... still i'll see how itlooks when its all finished before deciding. the skulls on the gold dangly bits on his skirt (sorry its late, i'm tired and i cant be bothered to trawl my mind for a more appropriate word) will be repainted gold as i don't like the loom of them now i've painted it, as for the rest we'll see.

and yes, i will be doing the rest of his honour guard at some point...

Well i've done a little bit more to him... probably the last update before he's finished but i'd still like your opinions on things as i can easily change bits where the general concensus says that they are... well... a bit poo.... ayhoo heres the shots

as you can see i've added a bit of freehand (bsically copied from a model by Jarhead on cmon), the swords been done (but i might add some writing/scroll work on the leather and the cord on his chest has been done red...oh and i also changed the colour of the purity seals and scroll to make them lighter.

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00622.jpg

a shot of the writing on the scroll... i figure as the armour was probably passed down (and will in the event of his death be passed on) writing his name would have been a bit silly so 'Ultra' seemed to fit quite nocely...

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00625.jpg

a shot of the crux on his shoulder... went for the old school stone look rather than adding yet more gold... not sure whether the skull should stay grey or be painted white like the majority on the model.

one of the spangly bits that comes by the bucket load on this model...

Again opinions, comments and critique welcome, even if you just wanna say 'OMG ultrasmurfs suck!!!' cos in fairness, most of us agree with that :)

Ok, rather than start a totally new topic detailing my progress on what will eventually be a 1500pt ultramarine army i thought i'd add to this thread.

firstly i finished calgar some time ago so for completion sake heres the shots. there is a thread in the hall of honour somewhere, but thats not important.

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/calgar.jpg

heres a link to the cool mini or not model for those who want to vote http://coolminiornot.com/233193

i took this model to gamesday to get some advice from the 'eavy metal guys there and was advised to try and increase the contrast ebtween my shading and final highlights and to pay attention and stop making little mistakes (like on the U on his back one side the final highlight line was thicker than it should have been, its little stuff but noticable) so i decided to try and rectify these things on some new models.

i would really appreciate any comments from people as i NEED to improve my painting.

ok, heres the start of a captain, i'm painting him as part of the 4th company as thats the one the master of the fleet is from. I'll try and paint him similarly to the 'eavy metal version but it won't be identical.

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00953.jpg

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00956.jpg

this guy isn't finished (obviously) the cloak will get a couple more glazes and probably another couple of extreme highlights. this inner cloak should get some freehand too, not sure whether to follow the same pattern on calgar or do something more angular and simplistic.

heres the start of my honour guard, sam thing with the cloaks here. a couple of glazes before some more extreme highlighting probably using blazing orange and it should be there. as you can see from the front onl;y basecoated the blue.

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00958.jpg

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00959.jpg

and for the back of the banner i have an idea about freehanding a design. its going to be something along the lines of this very very poor paint mock up (dammit, why haven't i put photoshop back on my computer...) with simple scroll work inside the box to represent banner bearers past and notbale conflicts that sort of thing.

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/Untitled.jpg

feedback much appreciated, good or bad its fine by me

oh, and by the way i know i said about doing a 1500 pt list but dont worry calgar and the honour guard are not going to be in it, im not that cheesy ;)

ok got some progress on the banner. i was hoping to get these all finished at the same time but somethings come up and i need to have a few models painted well by thursday so i cracked on with the freehand

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00961.jpg

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00962.jpg

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00963.jpg

the fat little eagles are pretty much done, i need to add the scrolling now and some freehand symbols at the bottom of the banner, probably along the lines of laurels and skulls, maybe a crux aswell. would really appreciate some feedback guys.

oh and as for the cloaks;

i started with a red gore base.

washed with a mix of black/blue washes

highlighted back up with thinned red gore

then added increasing amounts of blazing orange to the red

when i got to pure blazing orange i glazed with purple ink and then red ink. if you dont use the red ink then its done, but if you do it ties the reds together really nicely but also nocks it back a few steps so you need to do a couple more extreme highlights on it.

ok busy day today, so far i've managed to finish the back of the banner

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00969.jpg

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00971.jpg

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00994.jpg

plus i've painted a grot, a dark elf assassin a wierdboy ehad and 3 nornal heads plus i'm halfway through a random knife wielding baby model and an empire captain... who said this was meant to be fun hey... can't wait till tomorrows over so i can sleep....

opinions always welcomed guys, and thanks for the comments so far.

@ kraegus, yeah it seems really stark in that picture, theres obviously a big difference between the colours of the lettering and the background but its not as bad as it shows in that picture. the background is quite yellow because of a gryphonne sepia wash so it helps to tie the two together. thanks for looking though and good luck with the rock, its looking great so far.

i will say one thing that annoys me about this banner is the fact that the left eagle is slightly smaller than the right. i have found that if i phtograph it at a slight angle its not really noticable though so its not all bad... oh and they are fat little beggars, they lookk more like turkeys to me than eagles :D

Hey, I just found your post searching for a red cloak tutorial / paint guide ... fantastic work. Very impressive banner - love it! So, I am stealing your recipe for the red cloaks and hopefully I can get close to matching your quality. Great job!

The banner is incredible. How long did it take to achieve the creamy colour and the eagles? They came out very nicely and add a superior appearance to the banner, just how an ancient standard is supposed to look like. Very well!

I am looking forward to see the front of the banner painted!

lol, this came as i surprise... i was peeping at te WIP threads and went, oh some ultras lets have a look... hey they're mine... not on the ball today ;)

the banner took about 4 hours from start to finish but i might be wrong, i was up all night doing it and about 3 other models at the same time so i'm not sure... i know i finished it at 5.30 am and went to sleep for an hour and a half if that helps ;)

the colour was bleached bone with a gryphonne sepia wash for shading, then white was added to the mix for highights until it was a nearly pure white on the extreme parts.

i might actually finish this squad off at some point... will post up pics if i do
