"Make the new Look Old"

Recommended Posts

Ok one thing I have noticed missing in here is discutions about about converting older tanks out of the newer models. I have done the ebay trole and check with every GW mail order in Eroupe and the rest of the English and Spanish speaking world and know that it is just not practical to equip any really large army with ventage tank models. I have 1.5 MK1 LandRaiders, 2 MK1 Preads, 2 MK2 Preads 2 or 3 old Rhinos and 1 each Razorback, Whirlwind and Vindicator. It can be done for about the price of 2 FW Thunderhaks but most of use just don't have that kind of cash rolling around. What I would like are first off any info on when the different Mks of tanks came into use and second ideas on how to "Make the new Look Old" I have a Pre HH force in the gestation stage along sid my 40K DA armies(20,000+ points real should count as more than one right?) and my girl freind wants old tanks for her Space Wolfs too. Any help or idea no mater how off the wall would be a help. Also anybody got a consisten workable MKII Dread Conversion out there?

See what I mean?

Scott-S6: Some people feel the older models are better because they have small profiles, and are thus better at getting cover and avoiding fire under the TLOS rules. Some people want them because 2nd ed and Rogue Trader models are associated with "Heresy Era" marines. Either group would probly love to take them off your hands. Myself, I prefer the new models... I think they look nicer, and the larger size seems better- its a tank after all.

I know, the new Rhino is a much better model - and doubly so for the variants. It had never occurred to me to sell the old ones.

I'll have to dig them out. Unfortunate that the B&C doesn't have a sale/trade forum - I'll probably put them on Dakka instead.

What are they worth?

Well I had to part out the whirlwind from Germany back in 05 and I live in the states so that was about 80 bucks. I payed between 25 and 60 bucks each for the others on ebay. It took a few years to get that many together. What I would like to do is take the new models and find cheap and easy ways to make them look like the old ones or at least close to the old ones. I love the new kits but they just don't feel right in an 30K theamed army to me. With as much care and attention as I see lavished on the Marines themselves I'd like to apply the same attion to detail to the tanks and speeders.

This pic is a perfect example. While I know to from the HH art books it looks enough like the Mk I to fit the time frame but could be made from a MkIII kit.

really top make the new ones look old for conversions, i guess you can add a rounded base, bisected down tye middle or even use tau vehicle hatches for the side doors. and then either scratch build the uni-visor out of plasticard/cardboard. or do the dual visor, and just cut some plasticard/cardboard plates and place one over each visor, then use either just not use the flip-wind shield or cut out the open-portholes and glue them to the plates. then just get some handlebars out of wire or from the guard vehicles sprues and glue them on the top hatches.

honestly it would probably be far easier to scratch build old rhinos out of plasticard/cardboard as their kits were really just a parallelogram with track housings, and exhaust tubes on the flanks.

If i knew old rhino's could be sold for that much cash, i wouldn't have chopped 4 up for terrain

oh well, i like my latest rhino conversions alot though. (even though i can't use 5 rhino's as grey knights player.)
