First Apoc Game (also first real 5th ed Chaos game)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I played my first Apoc game on the weekend, and since it was 4 players at 3000 pts per player, it was a relatively small apoc game.

I tried out a few things for the first time (or at least with the intention of analyzing them) and here is what I thought:

1. Termicide

I tried two squads, just to make sure if I messed up with one, I had a backup. So 3 termies with 3 meltas and powerfist. First squad came in, next to a Land raider full of blood claws and rune priest. didn't do squat. :( Missed on penetration rolls, and then they got gunned down.

Second squad scattered too far to do anything on entry but survived a turn and shot a dread in the back and blew it up.

Although they weren't spectacular, the psychological effect was pretty intense (or so said my opponents).

All in all, I liked them, and I can't wait to try them out again!

2. Lash

I had two units with lash: DP and Sorceror. The DP was able to bunch up a squad of 8 Wolf guard Terminators and we then proceeded to blast the crap out of them. It worked out pretty well! He then Lashed a broadside out of cover, and assaulted it.

Sorceror (on bike) didn't do much, but he did set up some crisis suits nicely for a heavy flamer and a charge.

Again, they weren't super effective but the psychological effect was very nice! It had my opponents second guessing their movement all the time.

3. DP

Sadly, he got stuck in close combat with a broad side for 4 turns (great rolling from my opponent), then got shot to pieces by strom bolters (horrible rolling on my part). Can't say much more!

4. Oblits

Horrible reserves rolling on my part, came in on last turn, so didn't do much... :(

5. Noise marines

Went with ( I now know) an unpopular setup of 8 marines, 7 blasters and one blastmaster. They did great because they were static most of the game so I had bucket loads of shots every turn, and when the range was an issue, I was blasting away with the blastmaster. I can see now why optimising the squads for all blasters or small squad with one blastmaster would be better, although I still liked the way the squad looked on an objective! :P

They did really good, can't wait to try them again!

6. PMs

They sadly didn't do much... They did blow up a Land raider when they disembarked from the rhino, but then got shot to a man by Tau plasma (so no FNP). I will have to try them out again for a better feel for them.

Don't have more time right now, so I'll post later with some pics and more comentary!

Hey dude,

don't forget there were a lot of psycannon rounds being pumped into that daemon prince when he went down. I'll admit your armor save rolls were really bad but with the ammount of time I spent painting my GK, don't make it look like it was due to a few storm bolters... even if it did look like it was (there were 6 psycannon shots and 4 with the storm bolters).

All in all it was a very fun game though. It's true that the termicide didn't work up to it's potential but II'll say right now (it was my dread that got popped) that having that appear behind your line is quite a good way of forgetting your objectives. It took a lot of willpower to forget about them and move on so I could bring my knights to haev a go at your DP... and it cost me their land raider too.

Anyway, post some pics! I want to rememberwhat happened as my memories are a bit blurred by our abuse of... herm... lack of sleep. Yeah.

Oh and btw, it took me 2 days to get myself back together. I'm getting to old for these kind of binges...

I'd love to see pics of your vehicle conversions, especially the whirlwind/predator and the flying chaos landspeeder.

What do you use them as?

I'm at work right now, but as soon as I get home, I'll post some pics!

Rule wise, I use VDR. When I learned of the VDR rules (3rd ed I think?), I got really exited and put together a few ideas. This army, the Fallen, is also called by my friends the "VDR army". Have 4 VDR vehicule builds: Speeder, Tank, 3 buggies, and 3 sentinels. I also loved the blastmaster weapon: the versatility of it was great especially in 4th where you could move and shoot them at str5. PLus str 8 ap4 blast were good too! They just got better with the 5th ed chaos dex (also ajusted the point cost though).

So the Tank:

Hellfire tank, 2 heavy bolter sponsons, twin linked blastmaster, predator chassis (13-12-10): 180 pts.

and skimmer:

Reaper land speader, twin linked heavy bolter, twin linked auto cannons, twin linked bolter, speeder chassis (10-10-10): 142 pts. If I need spare points, I take off the heavy bolters (they screw on) but mostly I just love the idea of a gunship that shoots bucketloads of bullets!

MSPaint works wonders for that. It'll reduce the picture quality but for web purposes it won't make a visible difference.

Open your pic with paint, go to the Image tab and select "Stretch/Skew". From there you can stretch them down to about 25% of their size and you'll have a decent picture size. From there, you simply upload it back to whatever pic hosting site you use and voilà!

Well, that's it for today. Next week, we'll be going over filters and layer modes. Plus, some little tricks to hide the pixels and get the reflections all right.
