ValourousHeart
First off, I know that the parent list in this post is for a different forum. I was using it to test out the viability of IST in Valkyries as a pure unit and my question below is =I= army based. I used 2 of the new Valkyries with some =I= stormtroopers this past weekend with mixed effect. The list I used was my 1100 pt Ravenwing list with WH hunter allies. Ravenwing list: Sammie speeder 2 x 6 bikes 2 x Attack Bikes 3 x LS w/ AC/MM The Allies portion of my List was: 2 x 5 storm troopers w/ 2 melta w/ Valkyrie with missile pods and door gunners. His army was an infantry Marine army with Sicarius. Game only went to the bottom of turn 2 when my opponent concede. KP mission - I had eliminated 65%+ of his forces with only the lose of 1 Valkyrie, a couple of IST, and a couple of bikes, but no full units. One Valkyrie hit a lot and killed nothing (made all of his saves) the other finished off a single assault marine sergeant because I miss guessed my ranges during movement. Also the Valkyrie counted for the only KP that I gave up. So not stellar performances, but plenty of potential had the game continued. To clarify, I was using the rules for the Valkyrie from C:IG instead of IA2 and in this match both Valkyries outflanked (arriving on turn 2, one on each side) Now this game doesn't tell me what I need to know about how these IST units will work with my Sisters, but it does raise some questions about rules/balance. In IA2 =I= and IST can take Valkyries as dedicated transports... but they are fliers w/ the hover rule. IA2 Valkyries cost 20 pts more if fully loaded than the the same using C:IG. Now 20 pts seems cheap to me for upgrading scout to flyer... but should the fact that they are changing from a separate fast attack choice to a dedicated transport be a free change? The main point of this post is that I don't want to be a jerk. I use IA2 normally to get cheap Rhinos for my sisters... and i tend to go light on tank upgrades anyway. And now that I have the Valkyries, I would like to use them... but I want to be fair about it. What do you guys and girls think? Use IA2 w/ the flyer rules? Use C:IG Valkyrie entry as written? Or use C:IG Valkyrie entry without scout.... or modified in some other way? JCarter
I don't know whom you play and with what frequency. Id say use any rules that you have thoroughly discussed with your opponent and explained the consequences. I would also say, either use IA2 only or the IG codex and others only for a particular game--no cherry picking. The new update to the IA2 rules generally makes the vehicles comparable to the new codices. On this ground you could probably justify using the IG rules for the Valkyrie. Up to this point, I have just been referring to the vehicle stats and costs themselves. When you begin to change what the units may or may not take, the situation gets stickier. Again, you're probably dependent on a pre-game discussion. If I were you, I would write out and reproduce a handout explaining all your divergences from the codices, rules and let your opponent read it before and refer to it during the game. number6
It's more consistent of you to stick with IA2. If your opponents are already allowing IA2, then you shouldn't have any trouble continuing to employ IA2. I would use the IG rules only if your opponent asks you to do so. ValourousHeart
But that would mean flyers in 40k... always having a cover save, always being able to fire all weapons, adding 12" to all measured distances to shot at it, and only hitting on 6s except by Hydras. Would you want to play against that? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/170698-i-storm-troopers-w-valkyrie/#findComment-2017368 Share on other sites
number6
But that would mean flyers in 40k... always having a cover save, always being able to fire all weapons, adding 12" to all measured distances to shot at it, and only hitting on 6s except by Hydras. Would you want to play against that? Are your friends allowing IA2 or are they not? Are they allowing you to only cherry pick what they like but not other things? I agree, flyers in 40K can be a huge headache. There are legitimate concerns for [dis-]allowing them. My point is: how far down the RAW do you and/or your opponents want to go? By the letter of the RAW, you don't get IG-style Valks. At all. You only get Valks provided you use the optional rules presented by Forgeworld. Seeing as you are being allowed to use IA2 in some capacity, it is not unreasonable to assume that you might be allowed to use it all. Or is it? Let's face it, Valkries are a pain in the patootie, however you slice it (even when using the IG rules). And using them is going to require you to negotiate with your opponent. Probably every time you play. If you think that's worth the trouble, more power to you. I don't have that kind of patience anymore. :turned: (I am of the opinion that GW should be held fully accountable, but that's another discussion entirely. ;)) Good luck. You're gonna need it.
