Thinking of starting Battle Sisters

Lately, I've been growing tired of Space Marines, and my Guard force is slowly building, and I thought to myself, I should incorporate Battle Sisters!

They are to me the one army I faced less than a dozen times in my entire gaming career, while retaining some devious butt-kickery to them.

Anyways, as a starting player to Nuns With Guns, are there any helpful pointers and do's and do not's?

Furthermore, what is a good core unit to build up as well? Starting from scratch...

This Thread has some good advice for a beginner.

The main thing to remember is that SoB are, with a few exceptions, all about close-range shooting. A Sisters army is at it's deadliest withing 6" of the enemy. That the main reasons mechanized lists are so popular for the SoB. Since Sisters are fairly weak in close combat we need to make the most of our close-range shooting.

Using Faith powers is important to winning; Divine Guidance makes all sixes to wound count as AP 1, Spirit of the Martyr turns a unit's save invulnerable, and the other powers are just as useful when used in the right circumstances.

HQ-wise, the Cannoness is a great value-for points, and is by far the most popular choice, the Palatine is never worth taking as the Cannoness is markedly superior for only ten points more. Priests and Inquisitor Lords usually only get taken for unlocking purposes. I don't have enough experience with Karamazov to speak on his merits, but Celestine the Living Saint makes a great addition to any Seraphim squad.

With Elites the selection for the Sisters is rather slim. Assassins can be useful but take a skilled hand to use properly; the Callidus and Eversor are the most popular choices, though the Vindicare, Culexus, and Death Cult Assassins can all be useful in the right circumstances. Celestians are basically elite Battlesisters with a slightly better statline and options, but most players prefer standard Battlesisters on points-for-value. Repentia can be devastating as every single model in the unit carries an Eviscerator, but they can't take transports, lack the 3+ Power armor save of other sisters, are difficult to control due to their special rules, and are usually a priority target for enemy shooting, so most players don't take them. Acro-Flagellants are similar to Repentia; they have devastating close-combat offensive potential, but like Repentia they cannot take transports and are usually priority targets for enemy shooting to prevent them from reaching close combat.

In terms of Troops the Battlesister Squad is the best choice, and the only one if you want to play "pure" SoB. Squads are usually run with a Heavy Flamer and Meltagun, two Meltaguns, or a Flamer and Heavy Flamer if mechanized, while Storm Bolters are more popular for footslogging armies. Stormtroopers can be useful since they have a lower minimum squad size than Battlesisters, and access to plasma weapons that the Sisters lack, but their inferior save and lack of faith powers compared to the similarly priced Battlesisters make them a less popular choice.

With Fast Attack Seraphims and Dominions are both good choices, depending on whether one prefers a jump infantry squad or a mechanized special weapons unit.

For Heavy Support the Exorcist is deadly as it can potentially fire six S 8 AP 1 missiles per turn. Retributors with Heavy Bolters are also popular for dealing with horde armies. Immolators are more popular as transports than heavy support choices. Penitent Engines, much like Repentia, are potentially devastating but difficult to control and fragile, so opponents will generally make them priority targets. Orbital strikes can be useful if used correctly, but they require an Inquisitor to unlock and are very hit-and-miss compared to other Heavy Support options.

Welcome aboard! There is always room for another Inquisitor ready to burn heretics. They are everywhere....

It should be noted that as it's an almost exclusively metal range you're gonna be shelling out alot of money for them, even on discount websites / ebay

Indeed, the question for WH is actually how many plastic models there are... Mostly tanks... And that's the rhino/immolator/chimera if I'm not wrong, right?

Oh, I am VERY aware of the metal range :)

I started with Grey Knights you know :P

Plastic models just doesn't cut it when there is a rabid heretic squirrel barreling down at you. Metal minis do however! :)

I like metal models for the most part. Something about the weight of it. Like I know its worth its money in weight.

I didn't think this was a decent enough question to start a thread about it, and I can't find an answer (maybe I'm reading it wrong) but When you have a canoness as an IC it says she "must pass an unmodified leadership test to do so". Now is that in addition to the normal test of faith rules? I've been guessing so, but I could be very wrong...
