WIP Actual Scale Terran Space Wolf

Doghouse

Recommended Posts

Although this Astarte is intended to lead my Imperial Army force I'm going to chart his progress here as I think that it's a concept that may interest some of you.

The force itself will contain Army and Mechanicus elements but the only one I'll be showing here is the marine aspect of the force so as not to violate board rules and maybe later I'll post some shots of the Ad Mech and links to the Army units.

Commander Lucien Enoch

The idea behind this guy is that he is a proxy for Colonel Straken. I don't want to go into too much detail here as it's guard related but needless to say Straken has a profile that is very close to a marine.

To me one of the most interesting aspects of the Legions is the Terran marines and how they would react to the recruits from their new homeworlds. Personally I can see some clashes occuring as old traditions are thrown out in place of new and I figured this would be the ideal opportunity to address one such clash of ideals.

So to sum the character up I've wacked together a brief intro:

The servos in Captain Enoch's bionic arm whined audibly in protest as he lightly keyed the door access panel to admit him enterance to his private quarters.

It had been ten long years since he'd lost the limb fighting greenskin boarding parties whilst commanding the Restitution during their exploration of the area of space known as the Wheel of Fire.

Despite the artificers request to replace the out dated augmentation he had always refused the upgrade. To him it was in memory of the lives lost during the pacification of the system, a grim reminder that no matter how many victories the Space Wolves won in the Emperor's name the Astartes were mortal and could be brought to their knees just as any other man might.

Even in the darkness of the room his heightened senses easily picked out the familiar form of Gravele.

"What's this, they finally sent someone to deal with the old man once and for all?" He snorted with contempt as he passed his hand over the rooms illumination controls.

"And it's a pleasure to see you again old friend!" Gravele laughed as he rose to his feet from behind the old wooden desk that stood with it's back to the cabins starboard viewport.

"What do you want Gravele? I have no time for your games boy." Enoch unbuckled his sword belt and placed it on the arming rack that held his old mark one thunder armour before unbuttoning the neck of his tunic.

Out of habit he ran his hand across the surface of the suit's carapace, his fingers brushing across the oiled surface of the thunderbolt icon embossed apon it's battered chest.

Each pit and bullet mark bringing back memories of battles fought and victories hard won.

"Why do you revere that old armour so much Lucien? It's little more than an outdated relic of a forgotten time, why do you insist on clinging to the past?" Gravele smiled to himself as he poured a second glass of Merican Almac and offered it to the Captain.

"Tradition, should we forget the deeds of the past then we are doomed to repeat our mistakes and pay for them in blood." Enoch said solumly as he took the drinking flute by it's long slender neck "The Regiment was built on honour and duty something that seems to have been forgotten in recent times."

"You speak of the Fenrisians?" Gravele read between the lines.

"They are little more than barbarians, they howl and bray like wild dogs. They know nothing of martial discipline." Enoch walked across the room to look out the view port as he sipped the Almac.

"You live in the past old friend, you should be more careful of what you say about the Primarch's people, they are our brothers now. There are those that say that you are losing sight of the objective of the expedition, there are whispers that you have out lived your usefulness." The concern in Gravele's voice was evident.

Enoch laughed gruffly.

"And what would you know of tradition boy? You joined the Regiment as we left Terra for the stars, you never fought in the Unification Wars..."

"For the grace of Terra Lucien!" Gravele snarled "This isn't the Regiment anymore, those times have long since passed, we are the Legion now!"

"And what has it got us?" Enoch barked in reply "Look at yourself Gravele, you hang wolf pelts from your belt like those Fenrisian animals. The crusade has always been about the pursuit of truth yet you embrace their feral practices as if they were your own." He slammed his fist in anger cracking the surface of the ornate desk as one of it's legs gave way sending it crashing to the floor.

"These barbarians embrace the flaws of our gene-seed, gathering these freaks together in the thirteenth Great Company! In my day we put them out of their misery, they are no better than those genetically mutated monstrosities used by the tyrants we fought in the Merican wars!"

"Ah but that's the point brother," Gravele spoke softly "those tyrants have long since been vanquished. The ghosts of the past should be lain to rest brother and we should embrace the future of our Legion."

He placed the papers he had bought with him on the small round table that stood beside the arming rack.

"These are your new orders, I am to replace you as Captain of the Fifth and you are to report to the Terran 12th/32nd as liason to the Legion. The Primarch may come from a barbaric race as you put it but he understands the value of comradeship. He felt it better that it come from a friend rather than a superior. I think that you sorely under estimate the Fenrisians brother."

And with that he turned and left to resume his duties leaving the old man to his thoughts.

So in short Enoch is having trouble adjusting to the newer ways of the Fenrisians and is being seen as something of a risk to the stability of the Space Wolves.

Out of respect he has been granted a position of liason to an Imperial Army regiment acting as part of the expedition.

WIP Commander Enoch

This is set towards the end of the Great Crusade and as a result Enoch has been equiped with one of the newer Mk IV Maximus plate armour suits.

I've begun sculpting the model and am in the process of building his right arm which will be bionic. He'll be armed with a shot gun and have a plasma pistol holstered at his waist.

Yeah that's the problem with a lot of the marine stuff. I could go back and straighten them out but it means completely redoing the legs.

Update

I've blocked out the main areas of the marine now and am begining to work on the shotgun.

I've used parts from a plasma gun, melta gun and bolter to form the basic shape and am now fleshing it out a bit more.

Once the shotgun is complete I'll begin work on the bionic arm and hand grasping the gun.

What I might do is add a drum under the gun so it looks like it can actually carry enough ammo to last the battle with a spare drum hanging from his hip.

I know it is a problem, but you seriously need to counter it in this model. It looks so off, and since you insist on making all your guard lanky, he won't look anywhere near as imposing as he could do. I advise just sawing the legs apart, so you have the fore legs and upper legs separate and off the main body, and pinning them into a better stance, adding in the soft armour again and then touching up the armour. I have done this in the past, and it ain't anything too major.

Anyways, the shotgun is coming along quite nicely. Though I would do something with the barrels, lest it look like a giant boltgun.

I think I'll have to look into repositioning the legs once the upper body is in place. Worse comes to worse then that way I can assemble the legs seperately, cut the torso off at the waist and join the two parts together.

What I'll be doing with the shotgun is removing the bolter barrel, moving it up and adding another beneath it.

I'll probably add a drum under the barrel so it looks like he can carry enough ammo to last the battle with a spare hanging from his hip making it an automatic version.

Given that it's the Imperial Guard version he's using, because I'm not using the marine codex and is strength three not four he'd be better off beating the enemy to death with it rather than shooting at them.

Cheers mate!

I've begun reworking the legs and overhauling the model. It's a bit rough at the moment but it's coming together nicely now.

The feet are just place holders for the time being and you can see that the right shoulder pad is split in half. This is a technique I'm developing to allow people to make there own easier than by using regular marine pads, the elongated shape it creates is also more in keeping in with pre-heresy style pads.

I also have yet to add the left knee pad to make the armoured leg Mk IV.

The guardsman is included soley for scale purposes so that you can see if I got the size right.

Very nice. And he looks big enough next to your mega guard. Seriously, them guard are so big I can imagine them lifting up orks and beating their heads in during combat. Anyways, I would love to comment on the legs, but lo, the computer I am on right now has a stupid screen that stretches the image, so I will reserve comment till I get on the laptop.
Very interesting choice of background, Doghouse. I like the story you've devopled for this guy, it's very remniscent of Iacton Qruze the 'Half-Heard' of the Luna Wolves. He is shun by his younger brethren and is an outcast by all means. The model looks awesome, and I'm a fan of the newer legs. He looks like one giant Arbites in power armor with that shotgun! :D

Cheers guys!

Quick Update

I've begun cleaning up the model a bit now. He's still pretty messy for the time being from the leg straightening but he's coming along nicely.

I've still got to clean up the feet as they are pretty mcuh gs place holders for now so that I can get the portions right. I 've also filled the gap in the shoulder pad with GS and just need to tidy it up a bit.

Once the model has been give the once over and cleaned up I'll add the back pack, plasma pistol, start the bionic arm and add a few pouches and grenades.

I'm itching to get started on the paintjob now.

Yeah yor best bet is to use an online bits store for the heads but they are awesome.

I'm after some help now with some background material for this guy. I want to include a Nork Deddog proxy in the army to fight alongside Enoch as part of the command squad.

Basically this'll be an ABC Warrior style robot proxy but I'm having some problems ironing out the background story on him because the Imperium banned the use of AI.

Here's a few thoughts I have concerning the matter but would love some feedback to fill the holes in the concept.

Robot Bodyguard Concept

I can't remember the exact details of why the Imperium banned AI but I do remember something about a war with the machines from some vague bit of background material that was used to explain why they use servitors or something.

Its kind of weird really because the admech used robots in the heresy but I know from the old background material that they had an artificial organic cortex.

There are a couple of routes that I could go with this. I'm not really keen on the abhuman thing (despite the irony of the Astartes being beyond human because of their augmentation) because it doesn't sit right with me.

I could have the robot assigned to him from the ad mech contingent within the force I suppose but I really want to keep him seperate in terms of background material.

I want to make him as much an outsider to the humans as the Astarte ideally and have them a little troubled by the presence of the machine.

I also want to bond him with Enoch in that they are both relics of a bygone age.

So what I'm currently thinking is that maybe one of the tyrants of old earth created an army of cyborgs much like the Emperor created the proto-astartes to fight for him.

The Space Wolves defeated him and maybe the technology base of his cybernetic warriors was part of the origins of servitors.

So at the heart of the machine lies the brain and spinal cord of one of the tyrant's elite cybernetic warriors. Core elements of the cyborg's personality remain but he's been reprogramed to fight alongside his current master.

The reasoning behind making him from the Unification Wars is mostly to do with Enoch's obsession with surrounding himself with parts of the war. He is clearly struggling to come to terms with the changes that have occured since they conquered Terra.

I'm playing more on the martial aspect of the Space Wolves with Enoch that had Russ been there from the begining may have been channeled in a different direction.

So the idea would be that this cybernetic robot has been stood in his stateroom aboard his vessel deactivated much like someone might have a suit of armour on display.

As Enoch is being assigned to an active unit it's not practical to cart around crates of old equipment from the wars so he re-activates the cyborg and takes it with him.

So you've got this weird relationship where he's fighting alongside this thing but at the same time it represents a link that keeps him firmly rooted in the past because he can't come to terms with the rapidly changing world around him.

Russ clearly realised that no-matter what he's not going to be able to sway the old warrior and so out of respect places him in a position where he will be of some use.

I'm guessing that in Russ's culture old warriors are given a great deal of respect so I can't see him chewing the guy out and just telling him to get with the program. In his mind he's probably allowing Enoch the chance to die a warriors death.

So how does that sound?
