I base paint them in Bestial Brown, then I paint the whole thing in Iyanden Darksun (the yellow Citadel foundation paint), but leaving like 1 mm of bestial brown in the edges. After that I add two thin layers of sunburst yellow, and then I finish it off with sunburst yellow + skull white mix :)

Thanks for all the cred and crits Brothers!

Thanks! :P

The Skavens are grey now? xD Haha, back in my days, they were brown :P

But I can see what you mean.. always though them wolves looked a bit rat-like, especially those with mouths closed, teeth out.

The fenrisian wolf was a kind of last-to-add thing. I'm not entierly happy with it, but I think it works, just to get that feral space wolf-feeling into the piece. I like it how his legs makes it look like he's running over that edge and is about to jump onto his enemy :)

Wow, great Diorama, although i think the base is kinda flat an needs additional details, but thats probably the pictures.

I love the poses of the wolves and World eaters and the blood and gore you sculpted is amazing.

I wish you luck for the competition!

Oh and that surfing ripper was AWESOME!

Yeah, try that color scheme, it always works perfectly for me! :)

Thansk again lads. About the ground: Yeah, it's a bit flat, I tried to create some levels with that small edge in the middle, and some of the stones, but due to time limits I had tp rush the ground a bit ;_;

I do like the spent ammo shells behind all the shooting guys, though. I added them last, and I really think they add a lot of "history" to the piece. YOu can guess what they've been doping the seconds before this "shot" so to say :)

Fellow Space Wolf,

It does me proud to see such talent among Space Wolf players. Especially because after all, we are the coolest of the loyalist chapters. a lot of the veterans play chaos because they don't like all the beginners wanting space marines or the chapter who's name shall not be spoken (Ultramarines) *shudder*. Anyway lol, we are better because we are the vikings with wolf fur who will never admit defeat to the foe, no matter the ferocity. Take the World Eaters for example, your diorama shows an excellent display of modelling and painting, but also the ability to think logically :-). Space Wolves own World Eaters.

For Russ!

Christ, I was my modeling skills were that good!! :P

Have a keg of ale on me and let the Fang know how it gets on the painting competition - the diorama's that good it deserves its own saga :)

Cheers

Brothers!

Came back from the competition yesterday, and I was surprised to see that I'd finished in second place :(

Now, I know it's a painting competition, and I was prepared to meet a lot of tough pieces in the battle scene category, since I though it would be popular (I mean, I love it myself :tu:), but this year... the other entries really wasn't that nice, honestly, and that's not to sound cocky, it's just that.. I've been painting minis long enough now to know a good one when I see it, and the other entire lacked some essential things that I think makes a good mini...

But the most shocking thing was that more than half of the ones in the competition weren'r even battle scenes. A part from mine, there was a Squad of Dark Elves on a Squad base, with no enemy whatsoever in sight. That's the regiment category as far as I'm concerned, not the battle scene. After that we had two nicely painted Chaos Dwarfs firing a mortar of some sort, again, without an opponent or anthing. I dunno about you, but a battle scene without a foe to me is like a duel with just one mini on it. It's illogical o.Ô

And then there was a pretty nice Necromunda/40k battle scene with some ghouls, a girl and a necromancer, and although it was pretty sweet, I found it pretty "locked" in motion rather than alive, there was a muzzle flash, and one of the ghouls was climbing out of the ground, but apart from that I didn't think it was much battle about it.. more like the beginning of a duel between the girl and the necromancer (with his weapon of choice, ghouls). I do hope that one was the one who won though, because the two others, nicely painted as some of them were, weren't even battle scenes by my or most people's definition of the word :/

Oh yeah, and then there was this broken C3PO-star-wars-guy on a terminator base.. I sincerly hope that one didn't win, not because I'm pissed about coming second, after all, the most important thing is that I've got a cool diorama on my gaming shelf and that I learned alot by buildng it (since the second places and first places just won BL books anyway, which is a bit lame, considering I had all the books already and that it's a mini-competition o.o), but because it's a damn Star wars-mini, and it's a warhammer comp. Can't believe they accept these into the comp from the start, I reckon Golden Daemon had a Games Workshop-mini or get out policy, right?

Really, the swedish equivalent of Golden Daemon is a store-competion with loose category definition, Star wars models and a book (not even a damn omnibus) as first price.

Wish I was born in the UK :D

....and I believe Scandinavian Games Day really isn't too much to ask for.

Well, anyway. Not very dissappointed, just surprised that my entry was the only one in the Battle Scene category with some real combat in it :/ and the staff hinted that seeing some categories (BattleScene included) got so few entries maybe they'll change/remove some categories next year.....now that would suck.

I don't know which one took the first place, since they only gave the name, not the mini of the winner, but he wasn't there to collect his price either, but I'll check next time I visit the store.

Thanks for your support though guys, was really nice to hear all the good things about the piece. And I look forward to uploading the new pictures onto Coolmini and see what people there think about it!

I'll return next year, although with something smaller and cheaper. Ain't ok to pay £40 for something you just get a £2 book for :P, even though it's cool to have at home of course.

And this time, I'll start earlier than 14 days before the deadline xD

Maybe I'll start really soon...

Considering you only started a couple of weeks before, it really is staggeringly good, and worthy of greater than second... but still, congrats on the placement anyway. Suffice to say, around the Fang you're the real winner! Have an ale on us!
  • 2 weeks later...

Brothers, guess I'm reviving this post, but after this I will let it rest ;)

Added the Diorama to Coolminiornot today, with better pictures taken witha Macroenabeled camera, check it out and vote those of you who want to! ;)

The picture is about 7000 pixels long so bear with it :P

(I haven´t read the whole thread, just watched the pix so beware..)

Your diorama is fookin´ great! :tu: The modelling as well as the painting is awesome, totally awesome. Extra fun to see it´s another Swede making it as well (where are you located?).. ;)

However! This gnarled old Wolf is allergic to one thing and that´s mould-lines/"gjutskägg" you weedy git! :P I haven´t looked too carefully but I saw it on some back-packs, the line running straight over the sides is still there - "bakläxa" buddy! It takes a little time to scratch off with a modelling knife but is well worth the effort. ^_^

Do you have another gallery, I want to see more of your stuff. :P ;)

Keep up the good work but watch those friggin´ mould-lines..!

Thanks Brothers! And yeah, about the mold lines, as you might also have seen, some backpacks had them and some didn't. This is mainly due to the fact that I've got huges problems removing mold lines on thr round ball-like parts of the backpack. If they're on the legs or arms, which they usually are, the problem ain't as big, but with thos ballformed areas on the backpack, it's just a pain in the ass ;.; I removed them, with a knife and a file, and then when I apint the bastard, it appears like there still was a bit of it left. And then, I don't wanna go back to knifing and filing the thing, since it's painted ;_;

But yeah, I'll try and spend some more time on that the next time I do something like this.

Which, unfortunatley might be never, since the prize in the Swedish National Painting Competition is a £5 book I most likely already own ;)

Next year I think I'll stick to Single Miniature and Duel :P

Unfortunately, I've only done one other piece before this one, and that's last year's Space Wolves vs. Fenrisian Kraken that you already might've seen though. If not, click the name :D

It's smaller than last year's but also better in terms of painting and converting, since I had more time with this that one than this year's.

And oh yeah, I'm from Gothenburg :P
