Pre-Heresy Actual Scale Space Wolf

Doghouse

Recommended Posts

Hello mate! Great to hear from you again!

Yeah I think I need to remove about a mil in all directions on the boots. I seem to have a tendency to go a bit overboard on feet.

Quick Update

The shotgun is begining to take shape now. I've got the basic form in place just need to sharpen the edges before ploughing on with the details.

Here's the first Actual Scale terminator prototype I'm working on at the moment.

There are a few problems that I noticed with with making the terminator bigger and that is mostly to do with proportions. It's tempting to make this guy massive but the problem is that the bigger he gets the less credible it becomes that a marine can fit inside.

So what I've done is bulk the model out by scaling up from an Actual Scale marine.

As it stands I've begun to bulk out the left leg using GS and am adding the piston arms on the upper thigh. Once they are in place I'll redefine the greeve on the lower leg and add the armoured hip plate.

I also need to extend the groin region a little more.

The arms are blue-taced on for now and the main focus for creating bulk will be the shoulders and greeves.

Right back to Enoch...

I was hoping to have him finished today but got sidetracked. I've started on the bionic arm and am still cleaning up the shotgun.

I've also added the MkIV helmet to which I'll probably be adding the snout guard and will be converting the pack to match the Mk IV version at the bottom of this page. I still need to add a holstered plasma pistol.

I've also raised the head a little but still need to add service studs.

With any luck I'll be finished tomorrow and begin the painting that I'm itching to start.

Is that the same Terminator you used on your sculpting video on YouTube? Looks good so far. Enoch is progressing well too, though you do intend to polish off his shotgun drum clip right? Looks a little disfigured currently. I'm looking forward to the painting, and I too am itching to see this guy completed. Any ideas on the base yet?

hes coming on great buddy! I dont know how much extra detail you plan to add to the armour but I reckon some extra space wolfy icons might be nice, as would a couple of single headed eagle designs (which were awarded as special honours I believe)

wheres the head from by the way?

Thanks guys.

Darth Potato: Yeah that's the same guy.

As for Enoch I'll definately be cleaning up the drum before I begin painting as well as the housing and the strip that runs along the top of the gun.

Not sure about the base just yet, I normally go for desert bases.

Blindhamster: Not sure about the detail either mate just yet. The head is from the wfb marauder horsemen set.

Update

I'm hoping the next pictures I post will be of the painting getting started. I've just got to clean up the shotgun, add the top of the pack, add a few little bits and he's finished as I want to start the robot.

I'm at the stage now that I want to start painting the big guy now. In all honesty there are loads of different things that I'd like to do to improve the sculpt but I can always clean up bits/add details mid painting.

Thanks mate. :)

It'll mostly be in the colour scheme. He's one of the old school Terrans so the challenge will making him look like a space wolf but without all the trimmings that you normally find like pelts and tooth necklaces.

It's mostly because I was a space wolf player myself in first edition and was a bit shocked to see my guys change the way they did in second edtion.

This picture, one of my all time favourites, taken from the first Adeptus Titanicus supplement shows them in all their pre-norse glory.

Painting has now begun. I've basecoated him with Charadon Granite and am now going over that with a mix of Charadon/Codex Grey.

Normally I start with the face as it's the focal point but wanted to see how the armour turned out. I've superglued him to a paint pot in case anyone is wondering to make it easier to handle the miniature without the need for touching him.

Thanks mate! Still working on them. ^_^

Quick Update

I've got the basic colour for the grey sorted now and am playing around with highlights, shading and weathering.

I've got the basecoat for the skin in place and will begin to highlight, shade and work in the stubble.

He's coming along nicely now.

I think the reason they added all the pelts and other fiddly bits is because otherwise they are pretty boring looking marines. I really like the feel of your sculpt, but it is very plain, which is fine given that you wanted that.

It's a bit visually boring, especially since they have grey power armor to boot. I really like the yellow red and black triange motif that some of the older SWs have, which could look interesting on him too.

I really like the way the terminator came out. It's a pitty that these look like one off sculpts, it must be a real pain to have to start all over for the next marine.

Yeah he'll be fairly plain as far as paint work is concerned. most of the colour area will be in the heraldry.

Quick Update

Got a bit more done. I've started the heraldry on the shoulder pad which will be a quartered design and I'll also be addiing the RT era captain badge to his fore arm.

Still loads to do but he's getting there.

Thanks mate. :)

Yeah the Mk IV never had studs, that was a later thing with the Mk V to strengthen the more inferior materials used in the newer armour types by bonding an extra layer over the original and fixing in place with bonding studs.

I like 'im! And I like the concept of pre-Norsification Space Wolves (be it in modelling or in pre-2nd ed. fluff). I myself have toyed with this at the fluff level in prep for making my own, doubtlessly inferior versions of the project you have now undertaken. While I have no quarrel with the occasional pelt, tooth necklace, or tribal marking, the essential Space Marine-ness of Space Wolves today is hidden under a bunch of pseudo-Viking/Barbarian wolf-this and wolf-that. Give it a rest already! Show us the power armor underneath! :D

Doghouse, dude... you never cease to amaze me!!!! That termie you are working on looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The SW looks incredible, yet another masterpiece to add to the collection! :P

Just out of pure interest.... at some point in the future, you ever intend to attempt to make a Primarch???

Ps - hope the job situation is looking up for you mate.

wow! this SW dude is HUGE! i'm really liking the street sweeper shotty

re: the true/artscale terminator, have you considered the CSM obliterators, ala Boltman's lustwing?

i was just thinking about how intricate converting each plastic termy would be, then it hit me... obliterators are already massive and a quick check against a couple of the test artscale marines i knocked up, shows they are evenly sized and tower over them as the fluff suggests

cons: they're metal which means mucho grindo <_<:( tho the arms could be worked to have plastic termy weapons.

we may have something here, which means we'll have to give boltman a poke :HQ: heh, i like this smiley

thoughts? c&c?

It is Actual Scale. True Scale refers to a genre of making Marines bigger, Actual Scale is making Marines the right size and Art Scale is a name some guy made up to when he did Actual Scale marines, which prior to common belief, is a false phrase and merely a nickname.

Also Doghouse wants to make a terminator suit that is proportionate to the wearer. So obliterators might be too big.

Cheers guys! :P

Dorns padawan: I may have a bash at making one but I'd probably have to do either Dorn or Night Haunter which are my two favourites of the bunch.

Job situation is stabilising but I'm keeping my options open at the moment just in case.

Dominar_Mortis: Yeah oblits would make a good base for the terminators but the main problem is the cost of making them goes up quite a bit and metal is a lot harder to work with. I try to make mine stuff as straight forward as possible so that others can copy it and use it in their own armies.

Terrible_Trygon: Got it in one mate, mine are trying to be more proportionate so it looks like a marine could fit inside. Massive terminators look great but it can throw the scale out.

Quick update

I've made some more progress on Enoch and have started the heraldry. I still need to redo the barrel of the shotgun and am about to start work on the Space Wolves icons.

I'll probably do the base in a desert scheme, partially because everyone does them with snow bases and to make him pop out a bit from the base itself.

I'll do some shots of the heraldry later, my camera battery died just as I was taking them.

I may pop into town later today to pick up the first bits for project X as well.
