Daedalus Templarius
I didn't see a batrep thread for GKs other than the few that Silent Requiem has up in his Water Warrior thread, so I thought I would start one since I had a pretty good game last night. It is enjoyable to read about how others handle their own tactical situations, but feel free to critique what I did, I'll try and remember as well as possible what happened. So we ended up picking Capture Territory (the one where you pick objectives on the field) with quarters deployment. This was a 2v2 game, 1000pts for each person. I was running a stripped down list from my usual 1500pts: 1LR, 1Dread TLLC/ML, 2x PAGK squads of 5, 5x Term squad with BC (psycannons) Teammate was running Ultramarines, I'm not sure of his exact list but some notable units : Dread with Asscannon, tactical w/ HB, ridiculously overpriced retinue that barely did anything, CC terminator squad that basically got wiped out by a chaplain, 2 bikes Other team was running Orks and Blood Angels. My orky friend is going to work on focusing his army more, I think he was spread too thin on unit types: Big slugga boy squad, big shoota boy squad, tank busta squad, nob squad, warboss w/ retinue & truck, buggy, bikes; although he did throw it together right before we started. Notables from BA were a death company squad led by chaplain, lascannon dev squad, lascannon tac squad, shooty terminators, Mephistron (who never left their deployment), and a tac squad with HB that never left the deployment either. I have that set of buildings, so we took turns setting those up as objectives, along with a few other pieces we had sitting around bringing objectives total to 6. They had 3 almost inside of their deployment zone... which we kind of screwed up, since at first we had 4 and figured that wasn't enough, so we added two more but I was upstairs looking for something while that happened. No biggie though. The six objectives/buildings were ringed around the table (~6x5? it was my dining room table), so we each started with two in our deployment. Turn 1: They thankfully went first and spent their whole first turn not doing much, BAs turtled up in the large building objective in their deployment, but overall most of his units didn't really make it out of the deployment zone at all. Orky bikes pushed out into the center, followed by a buggy and a full squad of boyz. I don't think they could fire a shot. Ultramarines basically copied BA strat, turtling into their starting objective (they are brothers, and they both do this EVERY TIME) and moving off to his left toward one of the objectives in the lower right quadrent of the table that was pretty far for everyone to get to. He ran his bikes over to me. I thought about turtling too, but decided that would be a terrible idea, since we would just get a meatgrinder and I would have bad positioning. I poked my Dread out of the right side of my starting building/objective, drawing an easy bead on an orky buggy with twin-linked rocket launchas. I pushed my PAGKs over to the left side of my building, planning to bring them out into the center area (bad positioning for what happened later), and then I rolled my LR loaded with GKT over towards the unclaimed objective to my right. It was a 12" move so I had no weapons, but I offloaded my GKT squad and got them into firing range through the window of the building and at the Las-Tac squad inside. The LR was hidden from said las-tac squad by the un-windowed wall, so I didn't really have anything that could hurt it. TLLC dread blew up the buggy with one las shot, and the GKT unloaded a hail of death on the tac-las squad, felling about 3/4 of their number. No assaults Turn 2: Said las-tac squad passed its morale test, unfortunately. Orks changed course to push up towards me instead of the middle, thankfully my GKT were hidden behind the building they were coming up the side of, and none of them had anything to hurt the LR. BA spent another turn getting guys in his objective into position, and started moving out towards the same objective that Ultra was going for with his death co. He also moved the las-dev squad out into the open, beading my LR from across the table (which I almost didn't notice until too late), at least he couldn't fire this turn. BA terminators salvo of stormbolters was enough to fell 2 of my terminators (I am amazing at rolling 1s), of course I forgot to invoke shrouding before he fired at me. The las-tac squad took a pop at my dread but missed. Orks couldn't do anything besides angrily stare at the broadside of a LR. I moved my LR and GKT further into the pocket behind the objective building and the table edge. Dread and PAGK swapped positions on my deployment building objective, so they could get a bead on the approaching ork horde and the dread could shoot on higher priority targets (too bad it didn't work out that way). LR fired its lascannon at the approaching warboss/retinue truck, unfortunately it ricocheted harmlessly. I was going to have to deal with them in assault next turn, no doubt. The TLHB took out a few more of the las-tac squad, and the GKT finished the rest except for the sergeant. In hindsight it probably would have been better to concentrate fire on the truck, although it didn't really matter since they were within assault range next turn. My PAGK carved a swath of devastation through the Ork horde approaching, felling about half of their number with 20 stormbolter rounds. The dread took a shot at something and killed it, I think it was a member of the Death co. The ultras were on the other side of the map, except for his bikes, which were with me, and managed to take out some of the orky bikes (do you remove those models or do they become cover like a vehicle... I'm pretty sure you remove but we left them there anyway). The remaining ultras did little other than maybe a salvo with a HB from the turtled position in the building. Some of his forces were still moving towards the corner objective, ready to meet up with death co. and friends. Turn 3: Since all the orky bikes were dead and a huge number of his troops were gone, my orky friend turned what was left of his group away from where I was to push out towards the middle. Although, as I suspected, his brought his warboss and retinue out to attack my GKT. The sergeant left over from the las-tac squad was over there too, but he was pretty ineffectual at this point. The wartrukk, with rocket launcher, managed to score a glancing hit on my LR, which ended up as a shaken result; could have been worse. Some more shots landed on the GKT squad, but they managed to shrug off the damage with armor saves. I don't think much happened between the BA and ultra, they could barely reach each other with their units, but at least my orky friend was headed over there into the mix along with the death co. Thankfully, the ultra managed to pick off a few of the death-co in their foot-slog to the corner objective, which, if the BA had of waited for orky support, he probably would have arrived in much greater strength. Warboss and retinue assaulted my GKT, which probably wasn't their best idea. Without Power of the WAAAGH, I had initiative and went first. GKT are pretty nasty in CC, and they proved it. I missed one attack from the seven made, and every one of them wounded. Power weapons meant no armor saves, and his entire warboss/retinue was wiped out before it could attack. I consolidated backwards into some cover. The death co. wiped out a tactical squad that Ultra had placed ahead of his terminators, leaving him ripe for bullet riddling by ultra's squads stationed up in the building objective. They ended their part of the turn without much else. Ultra moved his bikes up towards the remaining orks on the side with me, I moved out my PAGK from their pseudo-cover from my starting objective (yea, they were still behind it, I wish I had of started them on the side with my GKT instead of the other). GKT moved up to draw beads on the terminator squad that had inflicted losses before. LR didn't move, I think this was my mistake, I could have gone and snatched up my PAGK at least. One of the PAGK squads killed off the sergeant from that las-tac squad, the other took shots at the BA termies. My remaining GKT took shots at the same termies, but the BA managed to save all of them. The machine spirit shot (BS2 really?) didn't hit anything. Things were getting interesting on the other side of the map as the death co. was finally in range to do something useful, but were still whittled down by massive gunfire... they would be in assault next turn though. I owned the objective I had set out to capture though, bringing us to 3 secured, while they only had 2 secured with one contested. Turn 4: My orky friend loaded up his tankbustas in his trukk, which hadn't really done anything the whole game, and started to move them out towards the center. He also moved his two remaining blobs, slugga boyz, and nobz, towards the objective the death co. was fixated upon... unfortunately he was still out of range to render any assistance. What remained of the death co. finally assaulted into a group of Ultra's CC terminators, what followed was the chaplain taking a heavy toll upon them, nearly wiping out half of the squad in his first attacks. When the CC terms struck back, several wounds were scored, but it wasn't enough to take down the Chaplain; at least it took down the rest of the squad. Morale was taken and combat continued between them, therefore stopping the approaching ork horde from any shooting they could have done. Ultra didn't do much else other than pick off some of the horde that was coming in. I moved up my PAGK squads and my GKT, LR didn't do much though. My GKT, PAGK, and LR all opened fire on the BA termie group that was the cause of my only losses, they were now hiding behind a wall in the BA deployment zone. Between all of those shots, I managed to take out two, with the last totally obscured from my view. And yes, Mephistron was still inside of his objective building in his deployment area. My Dread immobilized the trukk filled with Tankbustas with lascannon fire, and then missed a krak missile on another enemy. My other group of PAGK moved in to finish off a small group of orks, the ones they had decimated with fire earlier. They were already locked in with one of Ultra's bikes, so I just moved in, and with higher initiative and a lot of wounds, finished them off before they could attack. I had managed to clear almost the entire quarter of the board to the right of my deployment zone, and I was making inroads into their deployment zone. Turn 5: We didn't really finish this turn since it was getting late, but they wanted to finish out a few CC battles. The only moving to be done on their side was orks finally moving up to be within striking range, they fired a couple of shots that were largely ineffective. The only thing BA still had outside of his deployment area was his Death co., which was down to its chaplain. Although he did move his las-dev squad last turn, it didn't have LOS to fire at anything. I didn't even do anything this turn, since we were just letting them finish up, I was content to finish the game with 3 losses. The chaplain wiped out the rest of the Termie CC squad, just to be assaulted by the Ultramarine retinue, which the orks also piled into. There were many dice rolls, but in the end the retinue, down several of its number, came out ahead and killed the last of the orks and the chaplain. End: My team finished strong, although Ultra did manage to lose a lot of high-cost units in his CC fest with Death Co. and orks. We ended with 3 controlled and 1 contested objective, whereas the other team only had 2 controlled with 1 contested. The only things I can think I should have done differently with my forces is where I started my PAGK, they needed to be closer to back up my LR and GKT, whereas during the game they ended up footslogging behind. A LRC would have likely been more useful in this battle, since I didn't exactly have a ton of armor to go up against, and the lascannons did little to make their points back. I wouldn't have minded shoe-horning another LR in there for added mobility either, and perhaps Deep-Striking my GKT, but that could have also gone horribly wrong. All in all, it was a fun time. Now we(as in THEY, I have plenty) need to get up to 1250 so I can easily field another LR. ^^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/171388-gk-batrep-thread/ Share on other sites
