Thunder from Fenris New SW Audio book

Here's the latest skinny from his blog.

I’ve just listened to the final sound effects and music edit (version three) of Thunder from Fenris. I am very pleased with how this has come out. It’s sounds great. Though I am starting to become aware that not many folks seem to know about it, so if you could spread the word, I’d totally appreciate it. :-) It’s an audio book; it’s Space Wolves versus Plague Zombies (yep, you heard right) and it’s pre-released at Games Day and then in GW stores a few weeks later (and on-line, of course). That’s about all I can tell you without the BL inquisitors hauling my arse in for ‘questioning’.

Here is some info on the recording.

Just by way of a little insight, the actual recording day was around eight hours - roughly 9am-5pm - and generally consists of the writer (me, in this case) and editor (that’ll be Christian) sat in the directorial suite with script in hand, listening to the actor go through his lines and weave his magic over the microphone with director and sound engineer guiding and monitoring proceedings respectively.

It’s a team effort and, as always, we were surrounded by total pros.

Toby Longworth (who folks will hear voicing James Swallow’s excellent Heart of Rage in the not-too-distant future) really delivered for us (and me, I suppose) again with a stellar performance. He had three Space Wolves to nail and he had them down from minute one. Three very different characters; three very distinctive but wonderfully rendered and wholly apt voices. I couldn’t have been more pleased.

Easter egg - check out a character called Thorgard in the production and see if you can tell where Toby drew his inspiration from. Great stuff.

I’m hoping fans will love Thunder from Fenris as much as I did writing it, and will get the same level of enjoyment I did from hearing it immortalised into audio. I’ve yet to hear the music and fx edit (we recorded the rushes on the day, and another sound engineer will now be set to work adding atmospheric music, bolters, zombie noises and so on, and generally cutting the whole thing together).

Sounds nifty!

I wonder who they've got to voice us mighty Wolves? I'd say Michael Dorn would work well enough... it'd just get a wee bit weird where every SW sounds exactly the same. :o But still... Wolf Lord Worf anyone?

Sounds good, I'll eagerly await this audio book.

Edit: Durr... should'a read the second quote. I don't know who that mook is, so time to google!

Lando, is that for sale or display only?

Well, it said "pre-released at games day, and then GW stores a couple of weeks later" so I guess it's fore sale, yeah :D

Also, to the rest of you, you really dislike them audio books that much?

Sure, it might not be as good as reading the books yourself.. but still, I like the concept of being able to hear good literature while, for instance, painting minis.

The multi-taskingn of listening and painting at the same time overrides the loss of reading for me, atleast, since I tend to have little or no time for any of them xD

Same here. I've never ever heard a good audio book.

By good i mean that it matches the picture i get in my mind when reading the book myself ;)

totally agree with this, audio books IMO would only work if they had sound to back it up like actual gunfire or explosions...now that would be cool.

I don't usually go for audio books because well.....I can read faster(Took out the SW Omnibus in about 8 hours) But I do love devouring enything even remotely space wolf related. Back when I first got in to 40k I poured over everything I could find trying to get more and more wolf fluff

The first BL Audio Book actully had that, but it felt kinda out of place, even though the music and footsteps etc added a bit to the feeling.

Personally, I like it when the reader goes into the roles of the characters, with for instance different voices and levels of those voices... Nick mentioned that the guy reading this new SW-short story did an excellent job concerning that, so I think it'll be awesome.

My favorite BL Audio book is The Lightning Tower, by Dan Abnett.. moslty because I love the feeling in that short story, but also because it's about a more daily space marine/primarch life and not just the ordinary god of war thing :)

Yes. As others have stated reasons, I will add that this isn't the early days of radio entertainment and having a single voice actor/presenter read a story to me isn't entertaining. I'd much rather read it myself picturing the scapes and details as described with my imagination making the experience more vivid for myself as well as interactive. I've tried several times with different kinds of audio books and frankly, as hard as I try, they end up putting me to sleep. When driving I don't get any enjoyment either due to the distractions of the road (really bad drivers out here).

Perhaps if there was a "cast" of voices with some sound effects I might feel differently, IF it was done well and the story was a good one. I'm just able to concentrate on the story better myself than listen to someone drone on at me through my CD player.

Gee that cover art looks familiar. :HQ:

By the way... When that image popped up before and everyone was talking about the WD issue and the fact that this could be the new codex cover, I don't recall seeing the Wolf Guard on the right with lightening claws on the back of dual clawed power fists. Could that be the "wolf claws" they have been talking about?
