Hi,

My Birthday is coming up in a week and lately the Space Wolves have been drawing my eye and seem a good alternative to my Black Legion.

However i'm completely clueless as to where to start.

I know that the Space Wolves have thier own Codex and i've heard the rumors that they will be getting an update soon.

So i'm not sure whether i should use the SM codex untill the new SW codex,or just use the old SW codex.

Another thing i'm not sure about is where to start model wise.

As i know nothing about the Wolves army list layout and available squads/wargear and upgrades i dont know which models will fit the army.

Would i be better off buying the marine battleforce over the AoBR boxset?

Any help you guys could pass on to me would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Mike.

Use the old one if you can get ahold of the PDF- its free after all.

As for models- two boxes of GHs and a Dreadnaught are a good way to start, that and a support unit gives you a fully functional 750pt army too.

The AOBR set is nice, but SWs probly get the least use out of it of any loyalist chapter.

Heres the skinny:

GHs- can have either Bolters *most common* or BP+CCW. Even with a Bolter they count as having two CCWs. They cant have heavy weapons, but they get 2x CCW upgrades and 0-2 P. Pistols if they want them.

Bloodclaws- Scout stats, +2 attacks on the charge, free frag grendates. Very good at the initial killing of things, but they tend to atrophy quickly. Always have BP+CCW, and squad size is 8-15.

Thats our troops choices, wich should be your first concern. For vehicles we have every option the new C:SM has, save the thunderfire cannon.

HQS:

Wolf Lord- chapter master

Wolf Gaurd Battle Leader- Commander

Wolf Priest- Chaplain

Rune Priest- Librarian.

Venerable Dreadnaught- Just us.

All our HQs have more attacks than their C:SM counterparts, though the Wolf Lord and WGBL are missing out on a few stats.

That should give you a general idea of how the models work.

We tend to be a close range knife-fighting army like any loyalist marine chapter- were just better at the CC phase and require some enginuity to properly support our forces with ranged firepower.

welcome to the fang pup

let this be your first training as a wolf

the search function's your most powerful weapon, it will bring you guidance and the answers you seek to learn

to answer your question, the dex is/was available from GW canada, since they send it out in the days for free i'm not sure wether it's ok for members who own a copy of it to spread it further if they don't send it to you anymore

a good buy, buy the SW battle force if you can, this contains a rhino, 3 bloodclaw bikers, a greyhunter pack and a bloodclaw pack.

since you already played with chaos, how do you like mechanised forces?

if you do then mechanised wolves will defenitly be something for you.

on the other side there's the tempting and fun way of droppoding with our overall feared wolf guard terminators :)

ofcourse you can spam the bloodclaws and go footslogging too, it all depends on your likes.

buying the AOBR box is great, but to make wolves opf them you need quite some SW bits and converting, however the dread and terminators are tempting, still the SW batalion box is overall way better + more fun to puzzle together

for a starter list, do a quick search after the best 750pts list, since SW need a HQ per 750pts these are the thing you want!take a list from there, use some models you have right now to test it out and see how it works from there on

welcome pup, hope you like the ways of the wolves and don't get lured to the chaos side again

For Russ!

As a former staffer, I can assure you that if you want to send the Canadian PDF, you won't get in any trouble. Just be aware that the copy they scanned was not the last printing of the rules, so someone who has or knows of the changes in the last version may call you out on some of the changes.

And also be aware that there will be a new codex soon, so many models will be changing. I have about 15 Wolf Guard Terminators with mixed and matched weapons that will probably be obsolete. <sighs>

As for what to get...depends on how "wolfy" you want to go. Search on here and here: http://z15.invisionfree.com/The_Great_Crusade/index.php?showtopic=2102

If you plan on doing tons of conversions, get the blood claws and grey hunters boxes, and whatever bitz you need.

If you just want moderate conversions, ( for example, every single one of my wolves has a space wolf chest plate from the space wolf sprue), then I'd either get those same boxes, or at this point, wait until the new stuff comes out.

If you don't care about the conversions and are just fine painting them up and playing them as wolves, start off with the Assault on Black Reach set, and augment it with the batallion or army deals, as you save a ton of money.
